Bobby Cruthis
Randleman – Bobby Lee Cruthis, 63, of 1937 Fosterview Drive died Sept. 16, 1999, at his residence. He was born Aug. 21, 1936, in Randolph County, a son of Robert Lee and Martha Jane Beck Cruthis. He was a self-employed brick mason and was of the Baptist faith. On Nov. 15, 1991, he married the former Betty Jean Smith, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol Rivera of Georgia and Sandra Shaut of Lexington; a stepdaughter, Shandra Robertson of High Point; two sons, Jeffrey Lee Cruthis of High Point and Robert Lee Cruthis of Apopka, Fla.; a stepson, Tony Younger of High Point; his mother of Sophia; four sisters, Dolly Sue Newton and Francine Ghahagan, both of Archdale, Dorcas Lucille Hawkins of Sophia and Renee Smith of Randleman; three brothers, Dan R. Cruthis of Archdale, Laymon L. Cruthis of Asheboro and Benny C. Cruthis of Sophia; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Heights Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Porter. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Ralph Eldridge
High Point - Ralph Odell Eldridge, 84, formerly of 504 W. Lexington Ave. died Sept. 16, 1999, at the Presbyterian Home, where he had resided since 1990. He was born Nov. 9, 1914, in High Point, a son of Daniel Branson and Lillian Cook Eldridge. He graduated from High Point High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He served many families of High Point in his profession as a funeral director with Koonce Funeral Home and Sechrest Funeral Service, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Welch Memorial United Methodist Church and the Young Men’s Sunday School Class. On March 23, 1940, he married Bessie Horton, who preceded him in death Jan. 13, 1990. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are several cousins. Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Welch Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Paul McClure. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Young Men’s Sunday School Class of Welch Memorial United Methodist Church. Jonas Hill
Greensboro – Jonas Weaver Hill, 73, formerly of 3801 Repon St., died Sept. 15, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital. He was born Oct. 15, 1926, in High Point, a son of Robert Lee and Rachael Weaver Hill. He was a member of Clifton Road Baptist Church in Greensboro and was of the Baptist faith. On Jan. 15, 1952, he married Nancy Clifton Hill, who survives of the home. Surviving are a daughter, Timmie Brooks of Greensboro; two sons, Robert Clifton Hill and Jeremy Hill, both of Greensboro; one sister, Carlene (and Charles) Hill Edwards of High Point; one brother, John F. Hill of High Point; and five grandchildren, Christopher Jonas Brooks, Morgan Lou Brooks, Cody Allen Brooks, Joshua Hill and Chasity Hill. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Adrian Harris. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park in Lexington. Winston-Salem – Mrs. Dolores Langley Shumate, 56, died Sept. 15, 1999, at the University of North Carolina Medical Center. She was born Aug. 22, 1943, in Randolph County, a daughter of Russell and Dorothy Langley. She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Shumate. Surviving are her husband, Raymond Bill Shumate of the home; nine children, Ricky Shumate and his wife, Christy, of Mocksville, Johnny Shumate and his wife, Sue, of Tobaccoville, William Shumate and his wife, Amy, Chris Shumate and his wife, Sonja, Jason Shumate and his wife, Jamie, Ashley Waterloo and her husband, Jay, of Winston-Salem, Robin Hall and her husband, Scott, Teresa Weatherman, all of Walkertown, and Karen Scott and her husband, Freddie, of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Adelyn, Crystal, Brittany, Kayla and Christopher; her mother; one sister, Jean Collins; one brother, Bobby Lackey and his wife, Betty; and one special aunt, Romona McAdden. Yadkinville – Mrs. Grace Clubb Sheets Smith, 76, of E. Main Street died Sept. 15, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born April 24, 1923, in Norfolk, Va., a daughter of Richard Roy and Annie Mae Lumbley Clubb. She was married to Thomas J. Sheets, who preceded her in death in 1963. Surviving are her husband, Dexter E. Smith; five sons, Jerry R. Sheets, Bobby G. Smith, Larry D. Smith, all of Yadkinville, Richard T. Sheets of Charlotte and Roger H. Sheets of Darlington, S.C.; four daughters, Dolores Lassiter and Brenda Sexton, both of Yadkinville, Judy Flinchum of Denton and Sherry S. Tonner of High Point; one sister, Veronica Finegan of High Point; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Yadkin Memorial Park by Kent Barnes. Durham – Mrs. Margaret Lucille Walker, 74, of 1002 U.S. 54 East, died Sept. 16, 1999, at her residence. She was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Guilford County, a daughter of Ernest and Della Perry Wood. Surviving are two sons, Raymond Albert Walker of Smyrna, Ga., and Thomas Keith Walker of High Point; two daughters, Judy Ellen Wilkins of Four Oaks and Ruth Alice Lamb of Sophia; one brother, Curtis Wood of California; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Minshew Funeral Home Chapel in Four Oaks. Graveside service and burial will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery in Asheboro. Arthur Waters Jr.
Greensboro – Arthur Ealy “Brownie” Waters Jr., 78, of 2920 Isaacs Place went home to be with the Lord Sept. 16, 1999. He was born July 5, 1921, in Marionette, Ariz., a son of Arthur and Margaret Camillo Waters. He had lived in Greensboro for the past 46 years, retired from the Piedmont Triad Airport security department and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving in the 453rd Bomber Squadron. He was awarded a Presidential Citation, Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter Medal. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Bernice Harless Waters of the home; three daughters, Sharon Waters Blair and her husband, Stan, of High Point, Deborah Waters Helms and her husband, Bobby, and Celia Waters Harrelson and her husband, Ron, all of Gibsonville; two sisters, Daisy Palacio of Yuba City, Calif., and Pat Saunders of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Cecil Waters of Maryville, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel. Burial will be in McConnell Road Baptist Church Cemetery. Charles Burge
Thomasville – Charles Arles Burge, 84, of Beverly Health Care and former resident of Trinity, died Sept. 17, 1999, at Community General Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1915, in Stokes County, a son of William Columbus and Anna Browder Burge. He had been a resident of Thomasville and Trinity most of his life and was a former employee of Marsh Furniture and retired from Alma Desk of High Point where he was a supervisor. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and was a member of the V.F.W. of High Point, Post 9899. On Oct. 1, 1938, he was married to the former Cleo Burge who died Jan. 8, 1999. Also preceding him in death were his parents; five sisters, Vera Lawson, Mable Bowman, Kate Kennedy, Avis Walker, and Wilma Steed; and brother, Aldean Burge. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. George P. (Bronna B.) Miller Jr. of Greensboro; four sons, Billy Ray Burge, the Rev. Harry Wayne Burge and Larry Payne Burge, all of Trinity, and Wallace D. Burge of Thomasville; two sisters, Jean Hamner of Spartanburg, S.C., and Earlene M. Eaton of Meadbowbrook Drive, Trinity; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside service and interment will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Hearth Kennedy and the Rev. Charles B. Walker. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Saturday night at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and at other times at the home of a son, Larry P. Purge, 5138 Cain St., Trinity. Greensboro – Eleanor P. Griffin, 89, of Meadowbrook Terrace died Sept. 16, 1999. She was born July 12, 1910, in High Point to Julia B. Glosson and John A. Pendergrass. She had lived in Greensboro for the last 20 years, having returned to Guilford County after her retirement as a dispatcher from Allied Van Lines in Atlanta, where she had been a valued employee for 25 years. She was of the Baptist faith and previously attended First Baptist Church in Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Noley D. Griffin; and a son, Willward C. Hughes Jr. Surviving are her daughter, Dorothy Hughes Jobe and husband, William Ronald; a daughter-in-law, Ruth B. Hughes of Greensboro; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Hughes Ponzoni and husband, Robert, of Greensboro; three grandsons, Jeffrey Jobe and wife, Marcia, of Thomasville, David Jobe of Greensboro and Willward C. Hughes III of Atlanta; two nieces, Elizabeth Culler and Hattie Haithcock of High Point; a nephew, Mark A. Pendergrass of Wilmington; and a sister-in-law, Virginia McEntire. Richard Jones Sr.
Thomasville – Richard Leon Jones Sr., 71, of 319 Boggs Dairy Road died Sept. 16, 1999, at Duke Hospital. He was born May 3, 1928, in Guilford County to Troy Calvin Jones and Rose Kennedy Jones. He had worked with Southern Die Co. in High Point and was owner of several businesses: Heavy Equipment Construction, The Ponderosa Mobile Home Park, and formerly the Light House Gift Shop at Holden Beach. He was a member of the Brunswick Island Baptist Church in Supply. Greensboro Moose Lodge and Thomasville Optimist Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-grandson, Tyler Martin. He was married July 27, 1956, to Frances Ward, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Ms. Rosetta L. Jones of San Francisco; four sons, Richard Jones Jr. and wife, Denise, of Boiling Spring Lakes, Gregory Jones and wife, Debbie, of Lexington, Troy Jones and wife, Barbara, of Thomasville and Keith Jones of Thomasville; a brother, Charles Ruth of High Point; seven grandchildren, Tina Martin, Rick Jones, Kristine Jones, Katherine Batten, Kourtney Jones, Jeff Manuel and Jennifer Manuel; and a great-grandson, Bailey Martin.
