Mrs. Margie Ellen Howard Houston, 65, a resident of Edgewood Drive, died March 3, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center following an illness.
She was born in Danville, Va., on Feb. 9, 1936, a daughter of George Arnold and Nannie Reynolds Dixon. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed painting.
Surviving are her husband, Raymond Houston Jr., of the home; two sons, Ricky Daniel Howard of High Point and Robert David Howard of Kernersville; two daughters, Rachel Slaughter of High Point and Rhonda Paul of Conway, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Michelle Frazier of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Eugene Dixon of Thomasville and George Dixon of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Eavon Bingham and Joyce Martin, both of High Point; nine grandchildren, Andrea Bixby, Jessica Howard, Matthew Slaughter, Donald Paul, Jennifer Paul, Stephanie Howard, Ryan Howard, Donald Frazier and Derrick Frazier; and one great-grandchild, Wyatt Bixby.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Delbert Hill. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Willard Monroe Jennings Sr., 76, of 608 S. Elm St., died March 3, 2001, at the home of his son at 1420 Foust Ave.

Mrs. Venita Emery Journey of 3072 Pierce Meadow Road died March 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
She was a native of Moor County and was preceded in death by her brother, Timothy Owen Emery.
Surviving are her husband, Timothy W. Journey; her sister, Melissa Emery Allen; her parents, Marshall and Doris Hussey Emery; and her niece, Andrea Allen.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Visitation will be at the home.

Mrs. Addie Mabe Mabe, 85, of 2614 Johnsontown Road died March 3, 2001, in Liberty Woods Nursing Center.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Baptist Church. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville.
Leslie Winners

Leslie “Buck” Winner died March 2, 2001, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington.
He was born in Wallace, a son of the late Leslie and Grace Winner. He was raised in Carolina Beach. He was the great-grandson of Joseph L. Winner, who purchased the land that is now known as Carolina Beach in 1857 and formed a Town which he named St. Joseph. He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he was employed as a systems engineer for the Newport News Ship Building Co. on a contract for the design and maintenance of the L.H.A. ships to be built for the U.S. Navy. He was instrumental in the selection of the 3-M data to be employed in the reliability and maintenance of the ships. His last employment was with the Great American La Baron Hotels and Motels as plant manager across the United States. A son, Steven Winner, and a brother, Billy Winner, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Geneva Ashby Winner of the home; one daughter, Vanessa Hamilton of Atlanta; four stepchildren, James Ray Ashby and his wife, Deloris, of Sophia; Sherry Babcock and her husband, Don, of New Platte, NE; Sonya Rice and her husband, Paul, of Downey, Calif., Robin Leonard and her husband, Rod, of Penn.; one sister, Delores (Boots) Winner of Rocky Mount; one brother, Paul Winner of Richlands; two grandchildren, 13 stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Ravindan of Shallotte Medical Center, Dr. Luke Sampson, Barbara Meeiler, Evelyn King, Martha McIntosh, Harriet Gore, Lisa Nobles, Hilda Bahen, Bud Fisher, Bill Dowd, Sweetie Francis, Sam Sackett, Mildred Bellamy, Dr. Michelle Clancy and all the staff at Cape Fear Hospice for their help and support.
Services with military honors will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Florence National Cemetery in Florence, S.C. Arrangements are by East Coast Cremation and Funeral Services in Sunset Beach, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the James Ashby Liver Transplant Fund, 2292 Silver Springs Road, Sophia, N.C. 27350.

Mrs. Marilyn Yates Withers, 79, died March 3, 2001, at Sterling House in Goldsboro.
She was formerly of Thomasville and a member of Rich Fork Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Patrick Withers and his wife, Jane, of Thomasville, and Michael Withers and his wife, Carolyn, of Mount Olive; five grandchildren, Cameron Withers, Jennifer Jones, Erin Simpler, Shane Withers and Jeremy Withers; and two great-grandchildren, Stone and Dylan Simpler.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Rich Fork Baptist Church in Thomasville by the Rev. Byron Barker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive.

Mrs. Ruth A Yarbrough, 88, died March 3, 2001, at Bladen County Hospital.
She was a teacher for the Bladen County School System for 40 years. Her husband, Charlie Wesley Yarbrough, preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Gerald Yarbrough of Raleigh and Steve Terry Yarbrough of High Point, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Abbottsburg Baptist Church by the Rev. Dewey Jackson. Burial will be in Clarkton Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Lewis Funeral Home.
James Badgett

James Madison Badgett, 88, of 216 Hedrick Drive died Feb. 19, 2001, at Piedmont Center United Church Retirement Home Inc.
He was born Dec. 11, 1912, in Newsom, a son of Harris Valentine Badgett and Carrie Smith Badgett, who both preceded him in death. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He was a former owner and operator of Style-Craft Sample Co. of High Point. He was a resident of this area 44 years, coming here from Denton.
He was past president of the Thomasville Rotary Club, past advisory board chairman of the Salvation Army, member and past master of Thomasville Masonic Lodge #214 A.F.&A.M., with 64 years of service and past chapter advisor of the Order of Demolays, where he was affectionately called “Dad.” He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He was first married to Miss Edith Holbrook, who preceded him in death January 1948. On Dec. 27, 1949, he was married to Evelyn Gibson, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, R. Harris Badgett and his wife, Gayle, of High Point; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Alice Countess and her husband, Bruce, of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Mary Rose Badgett of Greensboro; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Clear Springs Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson Hill Community of Davidson County, by the Rev. Kyles Y. Wallace, the Rev. Peggy Finch and the Rev. Wilbur A. Jarrett. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the Enrichment Center. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service.
