William Clayton “Duck” Arrington, 77, of 3113 Liberty Road died Feb. 22, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Hospital.
He was a native of Surry County and a son of H.L. and Bessie Hyatt Arrington, who both preceded him in death. He was the founder and owner of Acme Florist Supply in Greensboro. After 54 years in the floral industry, he was awarded the “Distinguished Service Award” by the North Carolina State Florist Association in 1998. He was a lifetime member of the North Carolina Florist Association. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of Julian United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, the greatest of fathers, a giving grandfather, the dearest of friends and a devoted business man to his profession. He will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline “Polly” Arrington; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Rick” C. and Margaret Clark Arrington, both of Greensboro; two brothers, James Arrington of Westfield and Bobby Arrington of Randleman; four sisters, Wilma Thompson of Burlington, Rena Reynolds and Mary Smith, both of Greensboro, and Gladys Arrington of Tecumseh, Okla.; two granddaughters, Dana Lynn Arrington and Shelley Lee Arrington of Greensboro.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry, N. Elm St. Chapel. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone at Heritage Greens, Guilford Health Care Center and the 3rd Floor at Moses Cone Hospital with a very special “Thank you” to the Hospice Unit.

John Brawlery
High Point
John Eugene “Gene” Brawley, 96, of 323 W. Parris Ave. died February 23, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 27, 1904, in Iredell County, a son of John H. and Mattie Fleming Brawley. He was a resident of High Point since 1928. He was a master barber and owned and operated North End Barber Shop for 48 years. He was treasurer of the High Point Master Barbers Association for 18 years. He was a member of Westchester Baptist Church and served as the church treasurer for eight years. He was a member of the Adult Bible Class and was class treasurer for 20 years. He served as a deacon and was the oldest surviving member. He was a graduate of Scotts High School in Iredell County. He was a Santa Claus for the High Point Community. On Sept. 18, 1937, he was Married to the former Ghita Boyles, who preceded him in death in August 1998. He also was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Surviving are two daughters, Luretta B. Morgan and her husband, J.P. Morgan Jr., both of Thomasville, and Brenda B. Dennis of Trinity; four grandchildren, Michelle Compton, Jeffrey Eugene Hepler, Pamela Webb and Kristi Leonard; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Westchester Baptist Church by the Rev. Eric Peacock and the Rev. John Bishop. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Dr.

Betty Canday
Lexington
Mrs. Betty Y. Canady, 71, of Old Mountain Road died at 2:40 p.m. Feb. 23, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a serious illness of one week.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Becky and Terry Crotts on Young Road.

Fado Edwards
Conway, S.C.
Fado R. Edwards, 79, of Knotty Branch Road died Feb. 22, 2001, at Conway Hospital.
He was born in Horry County, a son of Joe D. and Emma Jean Martin Edwards, who both preceded him in death. He was a member of Juniper Bay Baptist Church. He was a member of Jordanville Masonic Lodge #297.
Surviving are four sons, Toye Edwards, Arnold Edwards, Jerry Roosevelt Edwards and Jackie Douglas Edwards, all of Trinity, N.C.; three daughters, Esther Hardee of Loris, Gracie Skipper and Linda Fink, both of Conway; a brother, Jeff Edwards of Conway; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Juniper Bay Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Thrower and the Rev. Lonnie Johnson.
Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Hargrove
High Point
Ms. Helen Hargrove, 50, of 1117 Carter St. died Feb. 19, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 23, 1950, a daughter of George and Lula Hawkins Talley, who both preceded her in death.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 106 Smith St., Thomasville, by the Rev. H.N. Goode. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Gilmore Funeral Service of High Point, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Ingram
High Point
Robert Louis Ingram, 64, of 1202 Camden Ave. died Feb. 21, 2001, while attending the funeral of his nephew in Bronx, N.Y.
He was born in Anson County, a son of Gaston and Bessie Bell Robinson Ingram, who both preceded him in death. He was a resident of High Point most of his life and attended the public schools of High Point. He was an active member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board, former assistant church treasurer, Men’s Club and a former member of the Male Chorus. He was a member and exalted ruler of Furniture City Elk Lodge. He was a member of Pointer’s Club. He was employed with AGI Industries Inc. He was preceded in death by four brothers, James Ingram, Lee Ingram, Clarence Ingram and Paul Ingram; and two sisters, Mrs. Queen Clinton and Mrs. Zeda Cheek.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Bigelow Ingram of the residence; a son, Darrell Ingram of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Ms. Robin Denise Ingram of Lexington and Mrs. Tawana Ingram-Allen of High Point; five grandchildren, Laneatra Ingram, Jennifer Ingram, Chrishlin Ingram, Jenaé Ingram and Tamica McDuffie; three sisters, Mrs. Cassie B. Ingram and her husband, Weldon, Mrs. Corine Johnson, and Mrs. Barbara Cash and her husband, Printist, all of High Point; and nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church by the Rev. F.O. Bass Jr. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel and other times at the residence.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Kozloski
Greensboro
Edward Thomas Kozloski, 51, died Feb. 22, 2001, at Wesley Long Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 24, 1950, in Camden, N. J., a son of Edward and Martha Kozloski. He was a Eagle Scout, participated in the Theater Guild in Smithfield and enjoyed playing the accordion for childrens’ parties in schools. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1972. He was employed with Union Camp as an industrial engineer and was recently employed with Motorola. He was preceded in death by his father and his daughter, Sara Naomi Kozloski.
Surviving are his wife, Iris “Heidi” Kozloski; two sons, Christian Kozloski and Jesse Kozloski; his mother; a sister, Peggy Halderman and her husband, Walter; his best friend, Zorro; and several nephews.
Funeral will be at a later date at Runnemede, N.J. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.

John Leonard
Thomasville
John Matthew Leonard, 80, of 149 Jacob St. Ext. died Feb. 22, 2001, at Community General Hospital.
He was born April 28, 1920, in Davidson County, a son of Edward Leonard and Lula Belle Beck Leonard. He was a resident of this area the greater part of his live. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II in the European Theater and was awarded the “Purple Heart.” He retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries, Plant V, having served more than 29 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Wallace and her husband, Donald, of Lexington; two sons, John Wayne Leonard and his wife, Martha, of Lexington, and Allen Leonard and Janice, both of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. T.J. (Mary Dessie) Hicks, Mrs. Dora Miller and Mrs. Tommy (Emma) Lee, all of Thomasville; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Cecil Worley. Burial will be in Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Churchland. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Judy Mashburn
Trinity
Ms. Judy Ann Mashburn, 50, of Mountainview Street died Feb. 23, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. tonight at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home. All other arrangements are incomplete.

G. Mendenhall
Thomasville
Grady Mendenhall, 67, of 315 Carter Drive went to be with our Lord Feb. 22, 2001.
He was born Feb. 14, 1934, in Thomasville, a son of Fred Parson Mendenhall and Myrtle Lester Mendenhall. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired from North Carolina Baptist Bowman Gray Medical Center and was a former employee of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department with 16 years of service. He was owner of Flowers By Neil Inc. He was a member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men’s #2 Sunday School Class and the Joy Group. On July 30, 1954, he was married to Miss Patsy “Pat” Delores Boswell, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ronnie (Cindi) Beal of Thomasville; two sons, Tim Mendenhall and his wife, Renee, and Neil Mendenhall, all of High Point; two grandsons, Andy Beal and his wife, April, of Thomasville, and Chad Mendenhall of High Pint; two granddaughters, Ashley Beal of Thomasville, and Kara Paige Mendenhall of High Point; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Kennedy and Miss Peggy Mendenhall, both of Thomasville; three brothers, Frank Mendenhall, Jim Mendenhall and Hal Mendenhall, all of Thomasville; two half brothers, Delano Mendenhall of Deland, Fla., and Clyde Mendenhall of Greensboro; and many friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Stuart White. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Members of the Men’s #2 Sunday School Class are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and will meet at 1:40 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Ernest Payne
Thomasville
Ernest Clarence Payne, 66, of old U.S. 29 died Feb. 22, 2001, at Community General Hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1935, in Andrews, a son of John William Payne and Norma Craver Payne. He spent most of his life in this area. He was last employed with Centerclair Nursing Home. He attended Wayside Freewill Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Timmy Dean Payne of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Hedrick of Fletcher, Mrs. Lillian King and her husband, the Rev. Henry King, of Thomasville, and Mrs. Lois Jones and her husband, Carl, of Lexington; and two brothers, Bobby Payne and his wife, Juanita, of Holden Beach, and Bruce “Joe” Payne, and his wife, Carolyn, of Lexington.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Junior Garrett and the Rev. Henry King. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight and other times at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Lillian King, 873 Lower Lake Road.
