Fleda J. Martin
Martinsville, Va. - Fleda J. Martin, 74, of Martinsville, died Nov. 19, 1999 at memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Carroll County to the late Johnnie Jessup and the late Maude Harrell Jessup. She was employed by DuPont of Martinsville for ten years in the Physical Testing Department. She enjoyed decorating wedding cakes.
She is survived by her husband E.T. Martin of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Bobbi Jean) Pruitt of Trinity, N.C. and Mrs. Richard (Marilynee) Bishop of Martinsville; one brother, Leon Jessup of Meadows of Dan, Va.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral services Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services Chapel with Dick Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park Abbey.

John Merrill
Thomasville - John Virgil Merrill, 82, of 293 N. Westwood Ave. died Nov. 19, 1999 at his home. He had been in declining health for six months.
He was born April 20, 1917, in Davidson County. A son of Willard A. and Mary Pearl Hughes Merrill, he was retired and self-employed as a maintenance repairman on air compressors for 30 years. A veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Colonial Baptists Church and active in the senior citizens at the church. He was married Nov. 21, 1936 to Macie Blanche Carpenter. She preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 1990.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Linda Tysinger of High Point, Mrs. Carolyn Kennedy of Thomasville, Mrs. Saundra Adkins of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Jimmy (Sherry) Harris of Lexington; two sons, Gary D. Merrill and his wife Wanda of Thomasville, Furman P. Merrill and his wife Brenda of Thomasville; two sisters, Mrs. Wilma McDaniel and Mrs. Cleo Hulin both of Thomasville; three brothers, James and Jack Merrill both of Thomasville and Paul Merrill of Carolina Beach; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Johnny Merrill.
Funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Revs. Steve Jarvis and Kenneth Miller. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at the Family Funeral Care and the family will be at the funeral home Monday from 7 until 9 p.m.

Orne Osborne
Archdale - Mr. Orne “Bud” Osborne, 73, of 303 Havenwood Drive died Nov. 19, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospitals.
Mr. Osborne was born June 16, 1926, in Loudon Tenn. to Ralph and Ruth Osborne. He had lived most of his life in the Archdale area. Mr. Osborne was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He had been employed at Southern Motors in High Point and later was self-employed in auto sales and also was self-employed in commercial real estate. Mr. Osborne was known for his musical abilities, playing the fiddle, guitar, and mandolin. In his earlier years, he played at the Grand Old Opry. He is recognized in the Tennessee Country Music Hall of Fame. Mr. Osborne also organized the “Sounds of Faith” gospel group. He was also an active member of the Republican Party. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in High Point. On Feb. 12, 1943, Mr. Osborne was married to the former Edna Smith who survives of the home. Also surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Renee Hicks and her husband, Willard of High Point; a son, Keith Osborne and his wife, Alex of Trinity; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother and step-father, Ruth and Harry Cureton of High Point; a half sister, Mrs. Frances Dunn of Alabama. Mr. Osborne was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Osborne and his step-mother, Beulah Osborne.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Revs. Ronald Carpenter, Joe Beck and Danny Stephens. Interment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and at other times at the family’s residence. Elgin Bolick
High Point - Elgin Olen Bolick, 82, of Pleasant Garden died Nov. 20, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital following an illness.
He was born July 29, 1917, in Gastonia, the son of Marcus and Mary Gladden Bolick. He was formerly employed as a body repairman with Thompson Chevrolet in Thomasville. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 3rd Army under Gen. George Patton, receiving four Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal for his service during WWII.
He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church and the Jess Watson Sunday School Class.
On Nov. 9, 1945, he married Margaret Griffen. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and James Bolick.
Surviving are his wife of the home; one son, Karl Steven Bolick of High Point; one daughter, Patricia Anne Cole of High Point; two sisters, Evelyn Brady of Gastonia and Essie Harrington of Thomasville; four grandchildren, Lisa Diener, Sheila Cole, Kyle Bolick and Ashley Bolick; and three great grandchildren, Kayla, Katy and Skylar.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Green Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Phillips. Burial, with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard, will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home from 7-9 tonight.

Sadie Clinton
High Point - Mrs. Sadie Clinton, a former resident of 1408 Leonard St., died Nov. 18, 1999, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born in Anson County to the Sallie Ingram. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in High Point where she served on the usher board, choir and missionary group.
She was married to Napoleon Clinton, who preceded her in death and also one daughter, Venilla, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Lee M. Ingram of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Braziet (Irene) Ingram of High Point; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends; a special friend, Pearl Edwards.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Loftin. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday , and other times at the home of Braziet Ingram, 1314 Furlough Avenue.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Hoover’s Funeral Home.
Steven Hawkins
High Point - Steven Duane Hawkins, 40, of High Point, died Nov. 18, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Alamance County, served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Midway Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lora Hawkins; five daughters, Stephanie, Shanon, Samantha, Savanah and Audrey; three sons, Robert, Ricky and Laston; mother, Joyce Hawkins; grandmother, Nannie Southard; one sister, Teri Larson; one brother, Frank Hawkins; and one grandson, Justin Hawkins.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Midway Baptist Church in Jamestown. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 7-9 tonight.

Robert Carpenter Jr.
Greensboro - Robert Franklin Carpenter Jr., died Nov. 20, 1999, at his home.
He was born July 9, 1946, in Hendersonville, to Bettie and Robert F. Carpenter Sr. He was raised in Newport News, Va. After attending Hargrave Military Academy and the University of Richmond, he served in the U.S. Army. He was the founder and owner of Motivational Marketing and Communications in Greensboro. He most valued time with his family and friends. He took particular delight in his loving relationship with his wife, Susan, and the accomplishments of his daughters, Kim and Lori.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Fowler Carpenter; two daughters, Lori Carpenter of Winston-Salem and Kim Knight and her husband, Kent; his mother; a brother, Ron Carpenter; two sisters, the Rev. Carol Fisher of Mebane and Gail Carpenter of Gaithersburg, Md.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. today at Hanes-Lineberry, N. Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm St.
