Mrs. Greta M. Shelton, 88, of Maryfield Nursing Home, formerly of Liberty, died March 17, 2001, at Maryfield.
A native of Rockingham County, she lived in Liberty for many years. She was a member of Liberty Friends Meeting and was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Shelton. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include sons, Wade, George and Jimmy Shelton, all of Liberty; Paul Shelton of High Point and Steve Shelton of Cary; daughters, Mrs. Polly Hinshaw of Cary, Mrs. Lee Thomas of Greensboro, and Mrs. Lucy Wilson of Winnsboro, S.C.; brother, Frank Mabe Jr. of Winston-Salem; sisters, Mrs. Josie Lineberry of Stoneville, Mrs. Beulah Jackson of Apex, Mrs. Lillie Miller of Haw River and Mrs. Maude Glidewell of Greensboro; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Liberty Friends Meeting by the Rev. Bob Medford. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty and other times at the residence of Wade Shelton, 101783 Silk Hope-Liberty Road, Liberty. Memorials may be directed to Maryfield Nursing Home, 1315 Greensboro Road, High Point, N.C., or to Liberty Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 1153, Liberty, NC 27298.

Tommy Smith
Archdale
Mr. Tommy Ray Smith, 24, of 6773 Cedar Square Road, died March 18, 2001, as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born Oct. 10, 1976, in Guilford County, a son of Charles and Bonnie Martin Smith. He was a resident of the area all his life and was employed with Hayworth Woodseeding. Tommy had many friends and was an excellent athlete. He was especially good at baseball and bowling, where he had several 300 games and one 800 series.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his sister, Tracy DeHart and her husband Dennis of Archdale; niece, Ashley DeHart; maternal grandmother, Susie Martin of High Point; girlfriend, Tosha Kiegler of Winston-Salem, and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Randal Neeley. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Steve Cox, Chris Idol, Jason Stone, Jared Exline, Tim Akers and Jeff Bradshaw.

Mary Akers
Thomasville
Mrs. Mary Ethel Lowe Akers, 86, formerly of Tazewell, Va., went to be with Jesus March 18, 2001.
She was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Tazewell County, a daughter of Charlie and Cora Belle Asbury Lowe, who both preceded her in death. She was of the Holiness faith and attended the Spirit of Life Ministries Church in High Point. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Franklin Akers; a granddaughter; six sisters; and two brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her six daughters, Frances Osborne, and her husband, Sherman, of Baptist Valley, Va., Jane Smith and her husband, Kelly, of Thomasville, Betty Donithan and her husband, Doug, of Bluefield, Va., and Mary Ellen Smith and her husband, Thomas, of Bandy, Va.; an adopted daughter, Judy Kerns of High Point; two sons, Billy Joe Akers and his wife, Mary, of Fayetteville, and Marvin M. Akers and his wife, Peggy, of Bluefield, Va.; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va., by the Rev. Charlie McGlothlin. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home, Tazewell, Va., and other times at 1707 Mill St., Bluefield.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Those attending graveside service are asked to meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home.

Mary Andrews
Lexington
Mrs. Mary Jane Andrews, 82, of Hunt Road died March 19, 2001.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 102 Shoaf St.

Ruby Blevins
High Point
Mrs. Ruby Blevins, 82, of 1510 Deep River Road died March 19, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Myrtis Bowers
Thomasville
Mrs. Myrtis Irene Carpenter Bowers, 83, of Piedmont Christian Home, formerly of Stemp-Everhart Road, died March 19, 2001, at the nursing center.
She was born Feb. 15, 1918, in Stokes County, a daughter of John Wiley Carpenter and Sadie Ann Flinchum Carpenter, who both preceded her in death. She was a resident of Thomasville most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Johnsontown United Methodist Church and the Cassie Ward Sunday School Class. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. On Nov. 28, 1936, she was married to Grover Averett Bowers, who preceded her in death Sept. 25, 1994. She also was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Betty Ann Bowers; a sister, Geneva Cummings; and two brothers, James Carpenter and Paul Carpenter.
Surviving are a son, Jackie Dean Bowers and his wife, Carolyn, of Trinity; three grandchildren, Brian Bowers, Terri Chamblee and Kevin Smith; five great-grandchildren, Ashton and Joshua Smith, Casey and Leanne Bowers and Daniel Chamblee; two sisters, Katealeen Myers of Thomasville and Katherleen Manley of Booneville, Miss.; a brother, Robert Lee Carpenter of Yadkinville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Johnsontown United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jenna Grogan and the Rev. Bobby Beck. Burial will be in Fair Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her son, Jackie Bowers, 4839 Tony St., Trinity.
Memorials may be directed to the Triad N.C. Chapter of Alzheimer’s Disease, 836 Oak St., Suite 480, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.

Harvey Byerly

Harvey Rayvon “Pete” Byerly, 73, of 1016 Virginia St. died March 18, 2001.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Family Funeral Care, 18 Randolph St. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Piedmont.

Jackson Cody
High Point
Jackson “Jack” Levoy Cody, 56, of 1123 Textile Place died March 19, 2001.
He was born Nov. 4, 1944, in Dillon, S.C., son of Steve Jackson and Jessie Mae Turner Cody, who both preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of High Point. He had been employed by Guilford Mills. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Gospel Way Baptist Church. He also was preceded in death by his son, Michael Wayne Cody July 1, 1995. He was married to the former Judy Bumgarner, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Nancy Cody Lewis of Midway and Susan Cody Craven of Mooresville; five grandchildren, Brent Lewis, Eric Lewis, Zachary Lewis, Jordan Lewis and Cameron Craven; four brothers, Hollis Ray Cody of Virginia, Stephen Douglas Cody and Wendell Darrell Cody, both of High Point, and Timothy Terry Cody of Denton; and a sister, Elizabeth Diane Southern of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Danny McMahan. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Herbert Gene Crotts, 71, died at 2:58 a.m. March 19, 2001, at his residence after a sudden illness.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Paul’s Chapel United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Margaret Curry

Mrs. Margaret Atkins Curry, 95, of SunBridge of Lexington, formerly of E. Holly Grove Road, died at 7:10 a.m. at SunBridge of Lexington after declining health of several years.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be 3-4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, 2924 E. Holly Grove Road.

Henry Garrett
Jamestown
Henry Maston Garrett, 88, of 547 Oakdale Road died March 19, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born March 3, 1913, in Guilford County, a son of Robert Lee and Ada Farrington Garrett. He was a lifelong resident of Jamestown and a member of Oakdale United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the administration board, a former teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school class and a former lay leader. He retired from Oakdale Cotton Mill, where he served as a head machinist 59 years. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandon Bailey. On Dec. 19, 1936, he married Kate Cox, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Audrey) Dowdy of 4872 Harvey Road and Mrs. Nancy Bailey of 301 Potter Drive, both of Jamestown; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakdale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Iverson. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Charles (Audrey) Dowdy of 4872 Harvey Road.
Memorials may be directed to Oakdale United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Ken Frank, 4727 Harvey Road, Jamestown, N.C. 27282.

Jesse Harrison III

Jesse Waddell Harrison III, infant son of Tabitha Leigh and Jesse Waddell Harrison Jr., died March 17, 2001.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today in Randolph Memorial Park. Visitation will be 11-12:30 p.m. today at Ridge Funeral Home.
