John Dorsett
Thomasville
John Charles Dorsett, 54, of 403 Crestview Drive, died March 24, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born March 26, 1946, in Randolph County, a son of Vaughn and Henrietta Hodgin Dorsett. A resident of this area most of his life, he was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, where he served as youth director. In addition to serving in many areas of youth leadership in the church district, he was an Eagle Scout and worked with the Philmont Scout in New Mexico for a summer with the Boy Scouts. He graduated from Guilford College and received an associate degree from Brevard. On Dec. 17, 1977, he married Faye Small, who survives of the residence.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Dorsett is survived by his son, Johnny Dorsett Jr. and wife and three children of Virginia; daughter Farrow Dorsett and granddaughter Brailyn Noelle of the home; and one brother, Bill Dorsett of Raleigh.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Kennedy Christian Life Center at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. B. Joe Parker and the Rev. Lee Pollick. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

George Foree
Carbondale, Ill.
George Earl Foree, 61, of 200 E. Green St., died March 21, 2001, minutes after arrival at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
He was born July 13, 1939, in Villa Ridge, Ill., a son of George Thomas and Olevia Thurmon Foree, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a resident of High Point until he returned to Carbondale in 1998.
He was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University class of 1961. There he was a dominant player on championship basketball teams for four years under the guidance of coach “Big House” Gaines. He was recognized as Most Valuable Player in the CIAA tournament, and was later inducted into the WSSU Alumni Association.
He coached basketball at William Penn High School and taught driver’s education. Later, at T. Wingate Andrews High School, in addition to those other assignments, he also taught health and physical education and coached cross-country track. He was most often known as “Coach” or “Big George.” He was an active member of the Carl Chavis Y’s Men’s Club.
Fraternally, he was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was of the Protestant faith.
Two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Audra Foree of Durham; a stepson, Cory G. (Sherry) Watson; three grandchildren, all of High Point; one brother, Ernest Foree; and one sister, Vera Moore, both of Carbondale; nieces and nephews, among them James (Gloriasteen) Chappell of Springfield, Ill., who seemed like a younger brother; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church by the Reverend F.O. Bass Jr. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. Public viewing will be at Haizlip Funeral Home Tuesday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Family visitation will be at the church Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.

Shirley Freeman

Shirley Mae Irby Freeman, 54, of 743 West A St. and formerly of High Point, died March 24, 2001 at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
She was born Feb. 13, 1947, in Alta Vista, Va., to the Rev. C.R. Irby of Norwood and the Rev. Maxine Irby, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and attended Crossroads United Methodist Church in Concord, where she had been a resident for four years after moving there from High Point, where she had lived most of her life.
Survivors in addition to her father are a son, Tim E. Wright and wife Karen of Greensboro; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Deborah) Dixon of Concord and Belinda K. Wright of Buena Vista, Va.; six grandchildren, Stephanie L. Cox of Kannapolis, Jessica T. Dixon of Concord, J. Kyle Dixon of Concord, T. D’Andre Wright of Greensboro and Samantha J. Mason and Mikale E. Mason, both of Buena Vista, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Jane) Gillespie and Mrs. Ralph (Gail) Brooks, both of Norwood; and three brothers, Ray Irby and wife Hazel, J.T. Irby and wife Jen, all of Norwood, and Wayne Irby and wife Sheila of Braselton, Ga.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis by the Rev. Lowell McNaney. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today at Whitley’s.

Kenneth Linwood Hall Sr., 69, died March 24, 2001.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Flag Springs United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Stan Kosinski
High Point
Stan Alexander Kosinski, 77, died March 24, 2001. He was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Poland to Adam and Helena Osuchowski Kosinski. He was a professional wood sculptor and has many works displayed in churches and has also done much work in the furniture industry. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was married to the former Halina Poppe, who survives of the residence. Also surviving is a daughter, Christina Addington, and her husband Dan of Beaufort, S.C.; three sons, Z. George Kosinski of High Point, Richard Kosinski of Monroe and Victor Kosinski and his wife, Colleen, of Kinston; two sisters living in Europe; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be at noon Tuesday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church by Father Joseph C. Zuschmidt, O.S.F.S.
A reception for family and friends will follow on the second floor of the Slane Student Center at High Point University. Hal Quinn
High Point
Hal Jenkins Quinn, 3516 Woodview Drive, died March 24, 2001. He fought a brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born April 10, 1934, and raised in Cherryville, he was a man of many talents; his ability to teach and coach influenced many lives; his love of life and people was the gift he shared with all of us. He was blessed to be able to hold onto this love of life and people throughout his illness and those who loved him will feel his absence on this earth.
Survivors are his children, Mary, Ellen, Chris, Connie and Karl; his wife Susan and her children, Erin, Bill, Ethan and Nolan; his grandchildren, Phillip, Susan, Quentin, Jack, Jacob, Daniel and Sam; brothers Steve and Mike; and sisters Hilda, Frieda and Julia.
The family will be at the home tonight and a memorial service will be held at the home Tuesday at 11 a.m. If anyone wants to honor Hal’s life with a contribution to the Adult Center for Enrichment, the address is P.O. Box 13048, Greensboro, N.C. 27415-3048.

Fred Alfred Styers, 78, of Cornelia Drive and formerly of the Sapona Country Club, died March 24, 2001.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Lexington City Cemetery.
Visitation will follow after the graveside service.
Lounett Canipe
High Point
Ms. Lounett Herring Canipe, 70, of 1610 Walker Place went to be with the Lord March 23, 2001.
She was born Nov. 10, 1930, in High Point, a daughter of Sadie H. Stephens and Allie Dills, who both preceded her in death. She was the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Army in High Point after World War II. She was employed in the restaurant business for 38 years prior to retiring to care for her mother and stepfather. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and the Royal Pearl Sunday School class. She was a loving friend, neighbor, adopted sister and mother to her extended family and neighbors. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shelly Lynn Coates.
Surviving are a daughter, Faye S. Coates and her husband, Jerald, of the residence; a son, Jack McKiethan (Kieth) Crowder and his wife, Sonnie, of Glenola; two granddaughters, Shannon Blakley and Judy Canoy; a grandson, Thomas Lou Crowder; two great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; two half sisters, Phyllis Banner of Morganton and Doris Ingalls of Westville, N.H.; and two half brothers, Charles Dills of Morganton and Tommy Dills of Salisbury.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Southside Baptist Church by the Rev. Bynum Orr and the Rev. David Miller. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby family funeral Service, Archdale.
Ralph Carter

Ralph Fenton Carter, 69, of 709 Old Winston Road died March 23, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born May 9, 1931, in Guilford County, a son of Lawrence and Georgia Milloway Carter. He was a lifelong resident of High Point. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He retired as co-owner of C&G Print Shop and was employed part-time with Buchanan Printing Co. after his retirement. He attended Trinity Heights Wesleyan Church. He was a former president of the North Carolina Bowling Association and also was a former president of the High Point Bowling Association. On July 15, 1950, he was married to the former Mabel Hall, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Cruthis and a brother Melvin Carter.
Also surviving are a daughter, Dawne Meadows and her husband, Tony, of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Allison and Amber Meadows; two sisters, Lois Taylor and her husband, Buddy, of High Point, and Marie Vest and her husband, Everette, of Archdale; two brothers, Donald Carter of High Point and Ray Carter of Archdale; and several nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Shelby Matthews and Joyce Wagner.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Heights Wesleyan Church by the Rev. James M. Capps and the Rev. Harold M. Pharr. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Miss Sherrie A. Cochrane of 1301 W. Green Drive died March 19, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was a native of High Point and employed with Harriss Covington Hosiery Mill.
Surviving are her mother, Josephine Cochrane of the residence; her father, James E. Cochrane Sr. of Camden, N.J.; her grandmother, Mrs. Lessie P. Smith of High Point; two daughters, Patrice Cochrane and Misty Cochrane, both of High Point; three grandchildren, Talesha Green, Iesha Gibril and Taylor Cochrane, all of High Point; three brothers, James Cochrane, Gregory (Beverly) Cochrane and Kenneth (Tavalynn) Cochrane, all of High Point; three sisters, Janet Cochrane of Thomasville, Evangelist Willa (Robert) Jones of Lavonia, Ga., and Henrietta (Alton) Lewis of High Point; a god-sister, Mamie Alexander of Greenville, S.C.; 12 nieces and nephews; five great nieces and nephews, all of High Point; a special niece raised as her daughter, Tomeka Davis; two special friends, Miss Mary P. Harris of High Point and Miss Geraldine White of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Cathedral Church, High Point. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery.

Sheridan Columbus James, 83, died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday at Lexington Health Care after declining health of three years.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Dallas Kay
High Point
Dallas Edward Kay, 90, of 800 Old Winston Road died March 23, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born July 1, 1910, in Anderson, S.C., a son of William Silas and Nora Wardlaw Kay. He was a resident of High Point most of his life and retired from Goodyear Tire Co. He was a lifetime member of the High Point Rescue Squad, now known as the Piedmont Triad Ambulance Service. He was married to the former Maggie Oneeda Weathers, who preceded him in death in 1954.
Surviving are a son, Eddie Kay of High Point; a daughter, Phyllis Gordon of High Point; a brother, William Kay of Thomasville; three grandchildren, Kenny and Steven Kay, both of Raleigh and Karen Adams of High Point.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
