Verna Keith
High Point - Rev. Verna Roberta McMillan Keith, 94, of Wesleyan Manor died Nov. 21, 1999, at Wesleyan Arms Nursing Home.
She was born July 10, 1905, in North Vernon, Ind., a daughter of the Rev. Clyde H. and Florence Mae Maupin McMillan. In 1926, she graduated from God’s Bible School and College in Cincinnati. She spent 31 years in Africa with her husband and family as a missionary teacher in Swaziland, South Africa, and Zambia. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Clarence Gault Keith, in 1991.
Surviving are three sons, Dr. John P. Keith of Las Vegas, Dr. David L. Keith of High Point, and Dr. Robert D. Keith of Lansing, Mich.; five daughters, Mrs. Esther A. Snyman of Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Bethel M. Lorenzen of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Mary M. Gunsalus of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Bonnie G. Sheen of Sunfield, Mich., Mrs. Verona R. Barrows of Tulsa, Okla.; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Merritt Funeral Home Chapel in Brooksville, Fla. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Eastchester Drive.

Pauline Owen
Denton - Ms. Pauline Bailey Owen, 89, of Lexington, died Nov. 23, 1999.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Lick Creek Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.
Mabel Shelton
High Point - Mrs. Mabel Graves Shelton, 92, of 1231 Potts Avenue, died Nov. 23, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital following several years of declining health.
She was born in Seagrove, July 28, 1907, a daughter of Elwood and Flora Graves. She lived in High Point for most of her life and formerly owned and operated Shelton Paper, Cone, and Tube Co. She was of the Baptist faith and was married to John H. Shelton, who died in 1964. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Nina Adams and her husband, Billy, of High Point and Mrs. Shirley Prescott of Kure Beach; two sons, James B. Graves of Efland and Stephen D. Graves of Apex; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Chapel by Pastor Ronald Diggs. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the service hour, and at other times at the home of the granddaughter, Donna Bugg, 1233 Potts Avenue.
Ethel Burge
High Point - Mrs. Ethel Marshall Burge, 89, a former resident of Archdale, died at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, 1999, at Wesleyan Arms after several years of declining health.
She was born April 19, 1910, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Vick and Anna Boles Marshall. She had lived most of her life in the Archdale-Trinity area and was a partner in Burge Florist of Asheboro for 40 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of Archdale United Methodist Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and choir member.
On Jan. 1, 1929, she was married to Roy Oliver Burge who preceded her in death on June 16, 1977. A daughter, India Burge Mackintosh, preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1992. She was also preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
Surviving are a grandson, Charles Gideon Mackintosh and his wife, Diana, of Trinity; four sisters, Mrs. Alma Morgan and Mrs. Gladys Carroll, both of Walnut Cove, Mrs. Lorraine Bowman of Germanton and Mrs. Margaret Culpepper of Gibsonville; numerous nieces and nephews; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica K. Sekulich of High Point, Adam Mackintosh of San Antonio, Texas, and Noah Mackintosh of Trinity.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Eastchester Drive, by her grandson, Charles Gideon Mackintosh. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of the service.
Carrie Goss
High Point - Ms. Carrie Cornelia Goss, 72, a former resident of Cloverdale Street, died Nov. 23, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. She had been a patient at SunBridge for the Triad for four months.
She was born in Thomasville, a daughter of Chester and Lula Mae Harris Goss. She had resided in Davidson and Guilford counties, respectively, all her life, and was of the Baptist faith. Her parents, one brother and one sister all preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen G. Steele of High Point, Mrs. Lucille G. Carolina and husband, Robert, of Jacksonville, and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth G. Thompson of Washington, D.C. There are nieces, nephews and cousins, among them, Mrs. Shirley Jones and Leroy Worthy, both of Thomasville, and Ms. Eula Mae Worthy of High Point, plus other in-laws and friends.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Kevin Gibson. Burial will follow at Hopewell Cemetery in Randolph County. Family visitation will be at the funeral chapel at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and other times at the residence of Mrs. Kathleen Steele, 1410 Cloverdale Street. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Christopher Harleman
Greensboro - Christopher Scott Harleman, 17, died Nov. 19, 1999, in a car accident in Kernersville.
He was a senior at Western Guilford High School and a computer student at Weaver Education Center in Guilford County. He was also a member of the Kernersville Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include his parents, Scott L. and Brenda D. Harleman; three sisters, Diana L., Tonya R. and Julie E.; his grandmother, Joy Gross of Florida; his grandparents, Don and Ruth Jones of Indiana; and numerous aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at East Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4259 Northhampton Drive, Winston-Salem.
Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Chapel.
Carmen Jennings
Thomasville - Mrs. Carmen Jennings, 75, of 1001-A Liberty Arms Court, went to be with her two sons in heaven on Nov. 22, 1999, at her home.
She was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, on Dec. 10, 1923, a daughter to Nazario Rodiguez and Damiana Roman. She was a retired employee of Anvil Brand of High Point and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Terry Monroe Jennings and Jerry Edward Jennings.
Surviving are a daughter, Jo Anne Jennings Glidwell and fiancee, Bill Walton, of Lexington; two sons, Ray Anthony Jennings and wife, Kay, of Carrollton, Texas, and David Edward Jennings and wife, April, of Boiling Springs, S.C.; two granddaughters, Lisa Glidwell of Sparta and Nicole Jennings of Durham; six grandsons, Phil Glidwell and wife, Pam, of High Point, Mark Glidwell and wife, LeeSa, of Winston-Salem, Steve Glidwell of High Point, Jonathan Jennings of Boiling Springs, S.C., William Walton of Lexington and Joshua Walton of Lexington; two great-grandsons, Mark Austin Glidwell of Winston-Salem and Cody Hollar Glidwell of High Point.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point by the Rev. Elton Wilborne. Burial will be in Deep River Friends Meetings Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight and other times at the residence.

Charles Ledford
High Point - Charles Wilson Ledford, retired lieutenant commander of the U.S. Navy, 77, of 3832 N. Main St. died Nov. 24, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Nov.21, 1922, in Harrimon, Tenn., a son of the late Anna Mae Stone and Charles Tendel Ledford. He grew up in Somerset, Ky., then moved to Salisbury where he graduated from Spencer High School. There he worked for Southern Railroad before joining the Navy in 1943. he received his Navy wings and served in World War II. After World War II, he graduated from United Television Laboratories and Capehart Television Factory. He worked for Television Sales and Service in both High Point and Winston-Salem. In 1950, he was recalled into the Navy for the Korean War. He served as a fighter pilot aboard the USS Princeton aircraft carrier stationed in the Sea of Japan. On Feb. 21, 1953, he married Sara Dean Miller and was stationed at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va., as the ground control officer, where he was presented a commendation award for Outstanding and Distinctive Service by Admiral Flatley. He was also stationed in Adak, Alaska, where he was G.C.A. officer and head of air and sea rescue missions. He retired a lieutenant commander from the Navy with an impressive record from both World War II and the Korean War. He joined Bivens and Caldwell as company pilot and service technician and later moved into sales. It was acquired by Hewlett Packard Medical Company and he continued in sales.
Through the years with several promotions, he became district manager and he retired after 22 years. In 1983 he founded Ledford Medical Electronics. As president and CEO he leaves behind over 100 employees that he was very proud of. His most important endeavor and achievement was raising his family to stand together and stay together and to be proud of his namesake and to know their father, for he never had one.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Miller Ledford; three sons, Charles (Chuck) Wilson Ledford Jr. and his wife, Lynne; Henry (Hank) Franklin Ledford, Michael (Mike) Dean Ledford and his wife, Lorraine; a daughter, Sallye Ledford Kirkpatrick and her husband, Ron; five grandchildren, Jessica Lynne and Carly Jennifer Ledford, Luke Michael Ledford, Sara Katherine and John Ledford; a sister, Francis Reynolds.
He will be forever loved and greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral service, with full military rites, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 918 N. Main St. by Dr. R. Scott Woodmansee and the Rev. Lisa M. Mullen. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Ave.

Jane McDowell
Archdale - Mrs. Jane McDowell, 57, of 5157 Glenview Drive died Nov. 23, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
She was born March 11, 1942, in Randolph County, daughter of Fred and Edith Frazier Dowd. She was a lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. On July 16, 1961, she was married to Tellis “Ted” McDowell who survives of the home.
Also surviving are her mother of Asheboro; a daughter, Lora Cromer and her husband, Tony, of Trinity; a son, Bentley McDowell; a sister, Carolyn Green and her husband, Purvis, of Asheboro; a brother, Jerry Dowd and his wife, Doris, of Asheboro; one very special granddaughter, Jennifer Cromer of Trinity; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Wiseman and the Rev. David Minor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and other times at the residence of Lora and Tony Cromer, 3159 Hoover Hill Road, Trinity.

Nancy Parrish
High Point - Mrs. Nancy Carroll Parrish, 69, of 1829-A Johnson St., died at 7:15 a.m. on Nov. 24, 1999, in High Point Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 19, 1930, in High Point, a daughter of Julius and Lillie Jones Carroll. She had been a resident of High Point all her life and was retired from Piedmont Ford Truck Sales where she was secretary/treasurer. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church, Adult 5 Becky Chapman Sunday School Class, and a former teacher in the Beginner’s Department. She was a former leader with the Girl Scouts and a member of the Women of the Moose. On Dec. 23, 1948, she was married to Dellmer Darrell Parrish who survives of the home.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Tony (Julli) Barnes of 706 Diana Drive, Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Cleveland of 2202 Delaware Place; and a brother, Paul Carroll of Thomasville; and two grandchildren, Donna Myers and Stephen Barnes.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday from Green Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin B. Anderson and the Rev. James Campbell. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home of the daughter.

Thomasville - Ms. Alvilda Irene Cosner Ramsey, 55, of 1600 Kanoy Road, died at 7:18 a.m. on Nov. 24, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 6, 1944, in Lowden, Tenn., a daughter of Albert H. and Mae Lambert Whicker Cosner. She had been employed with North Carolina Garment Co.
Surviving are a special friend, Gene Calhoun; a son, Richard R. Ramsey; a sister, Ms. Lovonda Sue Ramsey; two brothers, William T. Cosner and Wayman H. Cosner, both of Trinity; and three grandchildren, Justin, Joanna and Jeremy Ramsey.
