Richard Black
Sophia - Dr. Richard A. Black, 49, of 3537 Farlow Meadow Road died at 4:40 a.m. Dec. 12, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born July 31, 1950, in Indiana, Pa., a son of Norman and Annabelle Lechner Black. A resident of this area for 20 years, he maintained his practice at 409 E. Fairfield Rd., High Point. He attended Penn State University, Geneva College, Community College of Beaver County, Tennessee Temple University and was a graduate of the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill., in 1978. He received his law degree in 1989 from North Carolina Central University. He was a board member with the Christian Chiropractic Association, a member of the 6th District Republican Executive Committee, served in the North Carolina Chiropractic Association as president and treasure, was voted outstanding chiropractic physician by the association in 1999, was a member of American Legion Post #206, and was a former soccer and softball coach in the Archdale area. He also was a U.S. Army veteran and served as an airborne ranger in Vietnam. He was a member of Faithway Baptist Church in Greensboro and a former Sunday school teacher. On Aug. 14, 1976, he married, Patsy Cline, who survives of the home.
Surviving are one daughter, Anna Leigh Black; one son, Matthew David Black, both of the home; his mother of Freedom, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Tom (Karen) Huber of Freedom; and three brothers, Thomas H. Black of Shinnston, W.Va., Charles L. Black and his wife, Tamara, of Freedom, and Dr. Paul C. Black of Yoe, Pa.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. James R. Bledsoe and the Rev. Claudie Harrison. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery with full military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Mocksville - Mrs. Bertha Augusta Boner Brillhart, 91, died Dec. 6, 1999.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory. Visitation will be 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.
Leodis Daniels
Archdale - Mrs. Leodis Steele Daniels, 95, of 625 Westwood Rehabilitation Center died Dec. 4, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital, where she had been a patient for six days.
She was born Sept. 12, 1904, in Albemarle, a daughter of Samuel and Jeannie Steele. She lived in High Point most of her life and was a faithful member of St. Stephens AME Zion Church, where she served on the Progressive Club, until failing health.
Left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Mrs. Edith Williams, of High Point; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Helen Oliver of Harrisburg, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Graham Daniels Sr.; a stepson, Graham Daniels Jr.; and a sister, Charlotte Steele.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephens AME Zion Church by the Rev. Mary B. Kendall. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. at the church and other times at the residence of her daughter, Edith Williams, 1004 N. Centennial St..

Charles Holder
Greensboro - Charles Randall Holder, 44, of 924 Plantation Farm Road, died Dec. 5, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Guilford County, he was a registered nurse with the Guilford Child Health Clinic, a former junior assistant Scout master, and a member of the Harley Owners Club.
Surviving are his parents, Ardella Viola Holder and Brinzer “Red” Holder of Greensboro; a sister and her husband, Bobbie Holder and Pete Wagner of Lebanon, Ohio; and a niece and nephew, Zoe Wagner and Chris Wagner, both of Lebanon, Ohio.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Betty Jaeger
Thomasville - Mrs. Betty Burgess Jaeger, 81, of 100 Hedrick Drive, Piedmont Center, died Dec. 7, 1999.
She was born May 22, 1917, in Poteau, Okla., a daughter of A.W. and Pearl Burgess. She was a resident of the High Point area since 1946. She attended Satyer College in Washington, D.C. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and worked with the Gray Ladies in the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Phi Pi Episilon Sorority, an avid golfer and lifetime member of the Emerywood Country Club. On Aug. 16, 1937, she married Henry Jaeger, who survives of the Piedmont Center.
Also surviving are one granddaughter, Stephanie Maner and her husband, Bobby; three great-grandchildren, Bobby Maner, Derek Maner and Nickolas Maner; and a daughter-in-law, Delores Jaeger.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by the Rev. Mark Nanney. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Travis McCabe
High Point - Travis Hoyt McCabe, 29, of 435 Chester Woods Court, died Dec. 7, 1999.
Memorial Service will be at a later date.

George Manning
Gastonia - George “Mutt” Manning, 77, of 1326 Covenant Drive, died Dec. 7, 1999, at his home.
He was a native of Albany, Ga. a son of Bye Benson and Pearl Kilpatrick Manning. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Walter Benjamin Manning. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech. where he served as president of the student body and captain of the football team. He was an All-American football player. He graduated with a bachelor of science. and a masters in science in engineering. He served as lieutenant commander, j.g., in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was listed in “Who’s Who” in American Colleges and Universities. He was elected to the Albany, Ga., Athletic Hall of Fame and officiated for ACC football games for 35 years.
He was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where he served as senior warden and superintendent of the Sunday school. He was a member of the Gastonia Rotary Club. He was retired as a mechanical engineer for Cocker Machine and Foundry, had been chief engineer and co-owner of Cleo Screws Heating and Air-Conditioning, and had retired as president of Sundrop Bottling Co.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mildred Harris Manning; a son and daughter-in-law, George “Ricky” Kilpatrick and Joyce Manning of High Point; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Wayne Shovelin of Gastonia and Marilyn and John Moretz of Newton-Conover; and seven grandchildren, Marrie, Melanie and George K. Manning Jr. of High Point, Kelly and Harris Shovelin of Gastonia, and Laura and Charles Moretz of Newton-Conover.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Houston Matthews. Inurnment will be private at a later date. Visitation will be 4-5:50 tonight at Covenant Village, and at other times at the residence.

Robert Reese
Asheboro - Robert Luther Reese, 90, of 625 Holly St., died Dec. 7, 1999, at his home.
A native of Garysburg, he was born Sept. 26, 1909, a son of Robert L. and Willie Harris Reese. He lived with his brother Owen for several years in High Point and attended High Point College. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, he was employed by the Home Building Material Co., later Hedgecock Home Building that he managed until the mid-60s. He was chairman of the board of Randolph Building and Loan, later First Southern and then Centura Bank. He served on the Asheboro School Board, the Asheboro City Council and as mayor of Asheboro from 1962-1983.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and served on the official board and as chairman for several terms. He was a teacher of the Lloyd Bible Class for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Asheboro Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years, where he served as president, lieutenant governor and as a George Hixon Fellow. He also was the recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Asheboro Rotary Club. He was a member of the Asheboro Chamber of Commerce and served as its building fund drive chairman for its present location. He was named Citizen of the Year for Asheboro in 1984.
He was married to Elizabeth Ellen Ross of Asheboro in June 1935. She preceded him in death in July 1995.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Dede Reese of Asheboro; and a daughter and son-in-law, Sara Elizabeth and Clark Cook of Concord.
A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Chris Thore. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

King - Mrs. Ola Mae Vickers, 80, of 115 White Road, died Dec. 6, 1999, at Scenic View Health and Rehab Center.
She was born Nov. 9, 1919, in Surry County a daughter of Ezra Allen Needham and Rosie Mae Fulk Needham. She was a member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.
Surviving are son, Craig Needham Vickers of Raleigh; two sisters, Thelma Robbins of Winston-Salem, and Mozelle Sampson of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Allen H. Needham of Bahama; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dana McKim and the Rev. Ellis Rouse. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Hayworth-Miller Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville, and at other times at the residence of Thelma and Glen Robbins, 363 Robbins Rd., Winston-Salem.
Jack Armstrong
Archdale - Jack Griffin Armstrong, 87, of 310 Eden Terrace, died Dec. 9, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Jan. 4, 1912, in Long Island, N.Y., a son of William and Nancy Armstrong Royer. He was co-owner of Boxwood Gardens and R.A. Metals. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy and was a Mason and a Shriner. He married Sarah Culbreth Massey, who survives of the residence.
A private service will be held at a later date.

Virgie Austin
Archdale - Mrs. Virgie Shoemake Austin, 76, of 5176 Glenview Drive died 8:02 p.m. Dec. 8, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital. She had been in declining health for several months.
She was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Wilkes County, a daughter of George and Myrtle Holleman Shoemake. She had been a resident of High Point until moving to Archdale in 1987 and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries in Asheboro. She was a former member of the Women’s Republican Association, member of Community Baptist Church in Greensboro and Sunday school. On Sept. 13, 1942, she married Raymond Foster Austin, who preceded her in death June 15, 1982.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Marie) Bowden of 329 Faith St., Mrs. John (Myrtle) Bryson of the home and Mrs. Rick (Louise) Creasman of 3899 Crescent Ave., Trinity; two sons, G. Floyd Austin of 8404 U.S. 311 South and Ray F. Austin and his wife, JoAnn, of 212 Greenpoint Court, High Point, 12 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Allendale Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Calhoun, Rev. Bob Metters, Rev. Pat Ray and Rev. Ray Vaughn. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Iris Baldwin
High Point - Mrs. Iris Faye Campbell Baldwin, 36, died Dec. 8, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Those left to cherish her memories include her husband, Patrick “Khalifia” Baldwin of the home; two sons, Patrick Jr. of Greensboro, and Mariyo Campbell of High Point; five daughters, Devonda Brown, Parris Baldwin, Kadajah Baldwin, Nafartaree Baldwin, and Avis Baldwin, all of Greensboro; her mother, Ola Mae Campbell of High Point; and a host of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hanes Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1:30-2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
