Awell Blakney
Charlotte - Awell Blakney, 70, died Nov. 30, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Known as “The Fish Man” and worked at Carolina Spring for more than 20 years.
Funeral was held Dec. 4 at Bellefonte Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Belefonte Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Robert Ervin
Thomasville - Robert Kenneth Ervin, 83, of Britthaven of Forsyth and formerly of 155 Circle Drive, died Dec. 8, 1999, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 3, 1916, in Randolph County, a son of Joseph Newton and Samantha Elizabeth Smith Ervin, who preceded him in death. He was retired from Adams Millis Hosiery Mill, retiring in 1981, and was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. On March 24, 1934, he married Dorothy Mims Ervin who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Faye Green of Trinity, Mrs. Joan E. Burton of Thomasville and Miss Brenda K. Ervin of Goldsboro; a son, Charles R. Antel of Winona, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Eula Crumpton of Opelika, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Robert Kenneth Green and his wife, Mary Jenkins, of Thomasville, Mary Angela Luther and her husband, Gary, of Greensboro, James Michael Green and his wife, Emily Hughes, of Trinity, Jason Wayne Burton of Thomasville, Alecia Shane and her husband, Joe, and Steven Blake Antel, both of Kansas City, Charles R. Antel Jr. of Winona and April K. Paul and her husband, Brian, of Miami; and eight great-grandchildren, Justin Underwood and Jeremy Underwood of Greensboro, Caroline Elizabeth Green of Thomasville, Cody Paul and Tyler Paul of Miami, Fla., Frank Shane, Raye Ann Shane and Nicholas Antel of Kansas City.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Zion United Church of Christ by Dr. Joe D. Coltrane. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Joan Burton, 487 W. Burton Road.

Alan Hayworth
Greensboro - Alan Hunt Hayworth, 41, of 1100 Maplewood Avenue, died Dec. 8, 1999, at Fort Sill, Okla.
He was born April 9, 1958, in Greensboro, a son of Robert and Sue Hayworth. He was a graduate of T. Wingate Andrews High School and had attended High Point College. He was employed by the N.C. National Guard and held the rank of sergeant first class. He served as the Readiness NCO for A Battery, 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery in High Point.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Hayworth; two sons, Blake Hayworth and Brandon Hayworth; a sister, Linda Rankin and her husband, Blair; a brother-in-law, Mike Hughes and his wife, Jenny; three nieces, Emily Rankin, Claire Hughes, Gracie Hughes; a nephew, Todd Hughes; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Barbara Hughes.
He was a loving husband and brother and devoted father and friend.
A memorial service was held Dec. 9, in Fort Sill, Okla. Another memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the National Guard Armory, Elon Place. Visitation will be at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to a trust fund to be established at High Point Bank and Trust for Blake and Brandon Hayworth.
Lola Hodgin
High Point - Mrs. Lola Smith Hodgin, 93, of 808 W. Farriss Ave. died Dec. 8, 1999, at her home.
She was born April 21, 1906, in Reidsville, a daughter of Dillon Capus and Mattie Elizabeth Amos Smith. A graduate of Eastern Carolina University, she was a lifelong teacher with the schools in High Point. She was a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and was active in a local garden club. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and a former Sunday school teacher. On Sept. 4, 1937, she married William Warren Hodgin who preceded her in death June 7, 1997.
Surviving are a son, William Wray Hodgin and his wife, Lynette, of Danville, Va.; a granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Hodgin of Raleigh; and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie S. Ainsley of Maryfield Court and Mrs. Clara S. Freeman of Dobson.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church by Dr. C. Garland Young. Burial will be in Deep River Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Travis McCabe
High Point - Travis Hoyt McCabe, 29, died Dec. 7, 1999.
Surviving are his father, Robert McCabe of Greenville; his mother, Joy Young and stepfather, Daniel Young of Chapel Hill; a sister, Heather Lutz of Allen, Texas; two stepsisters, Nancy DeMonia of Hurdle Mills, Rie Jones of Culpepper, Va.; a stepbrother, John Young of Chapel Hill.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Dec. 18, 1999, at Chapel Hill Friends Meeting House, 531 Raleigh Road, Chapel Hill.

Lydia Manns
Thomasville - Mrs. Lydia Velna Hinshaw Manns, 91, of Graybrier Nursing and Retirement home formerly of Old U.S. 64 E died at 11:04 p.m. Dec. 8, 1999.
She was born July 27, 1908, in Randolph County, a daughter of Darius Marshall and Lydia Luck Hinshaw. She was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church in Randolph County. On Nov. 7, 1931, she married Arthur William Manns, who preceded her in death April 7, 1976.
Surviving are three daughters, Ms. Thelma Byerly of Seagrove, Mrs. Ronnie (Louise) Newsom of Denton and Mrs. Donnie (Rebecca) Hoover of Reidsville; two sons, William David Manns and Bobby Manns, both of Trinity; one brother, Clarence P. Hinshaw of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Rev. Bonnie Harris and Rev. Jim Banks. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Denton. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Bernice Marshall
Martinsville - Mrs. Bernice Williams Marshall, 90, formerly of 3420 Whitmell School Road, died Dec. 9, 1999, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville, where she resided for the past 14 months.
She was born Nov. 18, 1909, in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County, a daughter of John C. and Minnie Payne Collins. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ryan Williams, and second husband, James Madison Marshall. She spent most of her life in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County. She worked as a bookkeeper for Dan River Inc., and also for Belk Leggett. She was a member of Danville Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, Posey Aulton Collins of High Point and Herbert P. Collins of Martinsville.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Julian B. Williams and Elder C.B. Davis. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park. Visitation will be 7-8 tonight.
Lisa Nelson
Archdale - Miss Lisa Marie Nelson, 8, of 420 Aldridge Road, died Dec. 9, 1999, at N.C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
She was born March 3, 1991, in Thomasville. A resident of Archdale and Trinity all her life, she was a third-grade student at Trinity Elementary School and a member of Fairfield Baptist Church and Sunday school.
Surviving are her father, Jesse Ray Smith of the residence; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Smith Jr., of 5323 Marlbrook Court., Trinity; and her great-grandfather, Warren Smith Sr. of Westfield.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. James J. Grant. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Edward Oliver
Greensboro - Edward E. “Gene” Oliver, 78, of 1407 Glendale Dr., died Dec. 8, 1999.
A resident of High Point and Greensboro since 1970, he served in the U.S. Army, 8th Infantry Division, 121 Infantry Regiment during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He attained the rank of major. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business from George Washington University and was an accountant and controller in several major companies. He later earned a doctorate in education and was an associate professor in accounting at Guilford College and Elon College. He was the author of the college textbook “Cost Accounting: A Practical Approach.” After retiring from full-time teaching, he became a part-time instructor at Davidson County Community College.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy McMichael Oliver; two sons, Charles E. Oliver of Macon, Ga.; and James Michael Oliver and his wife, Janet; three grandchildren, Joseph L. Oliver of Spartanburg, S.C., Lauren Oliver and Bret Oliver of Greensboro; and a brother and sister-in-law, James W. and Helen Oliver of San Antonio.
Inurnment will be private at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, High Point.

Roy Tate
Sophia - Roy Howard Tate, 76, of 4349 Beckerdite Road, died Dec. 8, 1999, at his home.
He was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Surry County, a son of Ambers and Kelly Tate. He was a self-employed produce salesman and attended
The Church of the Living Word. He was married to the former Hazel Lorene Huffman, who preceded him in death April 10, 1990.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Tate of Sophia and Rebecca Tate of Randleman; four sons, James Leroy Tate, Howard Tate and Willie Tate, all of Sophia and Larry Tate of South Carolina; a sister, Elaine Swaney of Raleigh; three brothers, Jimmy Tate and Cecil Tate, both of Randleman and Troy Tate of Sophia; 15 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Jack Elkes at Sechrest Funeral Service, Archdale. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.
Vada Waters
Lexington - Vada Fay Wagner Waters, 93, died 9:20 p.m. Dec. 8, 1999, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after three weeks of serious illness.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Pilgrim Reformed United Church of Christ Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Fred Atkins
Thomasville - Fred “Bill” Atkins, 74, of 125 Larkspur Lane died Dec. 10, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Guilford County, a resident of the High Point, Thomasville, area most of his life. He retired from Myrtle Desk in 1981 and was a member of Trulite Missionary Baptist Church. On April 26, 1957, he married Georgia Mae Lovelace, who survives of the home.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. JoAnn Atkins George of Thomasville; and two grandchildren, Lora M. George and David T. George of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Trulite Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Sparks. Burial will be in Spring Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Family Funeral Care and other times at the residence.
