Udell Atkinson
Sophia - Udell Atkinson, 86, of 3788 Udell Drive, died Dec. 20, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Oct. 19, 1913, a son to John and Lula Baxter Atkinson. He served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of Trindale Baptist Church and was retired from Furniture City Glass Mirror. His son, Spidell Atkinson, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Williams Atkinson of Los Angeles; Six sons, George Briles of Los Angeles, Glenn Hunt of San Diego, Daniel Atkinson of Asheboro, Zimmie Atkinson, John Atkinson, and David Atkinson all of Sophia; three daughters, Diane Lamb of Thomasville, Mary Burchette of Pfafftown and Betty McMasters of Sophia; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister Louise Barker of Asheboro; and a brother Cecil Atkinson of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Trindale Baptist Church by Rev. David Williams. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

Richard Byrd
Asheboro - Richard Fred Byrd, 71, of 143 Forestbrook Circle, died Dec. 10, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home, Archdale.

David Harris
Thomasville - David Wayne Harris, 45, of 104 Kenn Myer Drive died Dec. 9, 1999, in the Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born Jan. 12, 1954, in Davidson County, a son of Wayne and Pauline Darr Harris. He was a graduate of East Davidson High School and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was a college instructor at Guilford Technical Community College and formerly taught at Carteret County Community College in Morehead City and Trinity High School, Trinity. He was a member of Pine Woods United Methodist Church, adult choir and Methodist Men. He was active in Morehead City and Thomasville are in his home churches, serving with various committees. On Sept. 9, 1979, he married Joan Swicegood.
Surviving are two sons, Jordan Harris and Matthew Harris, both of the home; his father and stepmother, Wayne and Louise Harris of Thomasville; and a stepbrother, Tony Hunt of Thomasvillel
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Woods United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Dingus and the Rev. Harold Holste. Burial will be in Calvary United Church of Christ Cemetery. The body will be at the J. C. Green & Son Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 6:30-9 tonight and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to Pine Woods United Methodist Church, 1000 Salem St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360; the Scholarship Fund of Guilford Technical Community College, Attn: Kathy Tipton, P.O. Box 309, Jamestown, N.C., 27282; and to the David Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o East Davidson High School, 1408 Lake Road, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Ernest Johnson
Cedar Grove - Ernest L. Johnson, 84, of 211 Hawkins Road died Dec. 9, at Durham Regional Hospital.
He was reared in Wilkes County where he was educated and later worked in local furniture frame factories. With the onset of the great depression he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he learned to cook and became an accomplished chef. It was during this time that he met his current and only wife, Mary Josephine Moore of Oxford. After his service in the CCC, he settled his family in High Point until he found work at the Newport News, Va. shipyard during the war. After the war was over he returned to Durham where he lived until 1970. He moved to Jacksonville where he was involved in several business ventures until his retirement in 1983. He and his wife returned to the Piedmont area in the little community of Cedar Grove, where they enjoyed their retirement until he was stricken with Alzheimer’s and other physical ailments.
He was active in his pre-retirement years in his church and community. He was a member of Lea Bethel Baptist Church. He loved children, particularly poor children and fatherless children. There were not many evening meals in his home that there were at least two or three neighborhood children sitting at the family table. He was an avid scout leader. He was scoutmaster for Troop 460 at Duke’s Chapel United Methodist Church for a number of years and later district director for the Occoneechie Boy Scout Council. He was an active member of his church, where he taught Sunday school and served on the official board. He was know for his culinary skills but one in particular was his famous Brunswick stew, which took all day to cook in a giant old cauldron over an open flame. Many hundreds of gallons were prepared over the years to help raise funds for the Education Wing at Duke’s Chapel.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Josephine Moore Johnson of the home; two sons, the Rev. Ernest L. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Carthage and John William Johnson and his wife, Delinda, of Durham; two daughters, Ruth Elizabeth Cates and her husband, Ralph, of Kernersville and Ollie Josephine Turner and her husband, Dexter, of Durham; three brothers, Noah Johnson and Wayne Johnson, both of High Point, and Eugene Johnson of Wilmington; two sisters, Liea Strange of Jamestown and Evelyn Henderson of Taylorsville; a half-brother, Ray Johnson; a half-sister, Barbara Sparks; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest Laurence Johnson; two brothers, Harry and Oren Johnson; and three sisters, Juanita Harris, Mabel Sykes and Frances Martin Durham.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Duke’s Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ben Wilson, the Rev. M.B. Collier and Dr. Thomas C. Elliott. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Bryan Funeral Home, Durham, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Rorie
High Point - Mrs. Mary Ann McNeil Rorie, 56, of 1212 Ragan Ave. died Dec. 9, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Haizlip Funeral home.

Betty Talley
Lexington - Mrs. Betty Jo Perry Talley, 56, of 13 Green Meadows Drive died Dec. 10, 1999, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at New Testament Baptist Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Piedmont Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Corine Wingate
Thomasville - Mrs. Corine Brown Wingate, 78, of 1105-B East St. died Dec. 9, 1999, at Community General Hospital.
Funeral will be 5 p.m. Sunday at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial will be Monday in South Carolina Visitation will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the church
Thomas-Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mozelle Woodlief
Thomasville - Mozelle Clinard Woodlief, 96, of 111 Circle Drive, died Dec. 9, 1999, at Thomasville Community General Hospital.
She was a daughter of Pearl K. and David W. Clinard. She was preceded in death in 1950, by her husband, Elmo P. Woodlief. She worked 40 years at Ragan Knitting Co., as office manager. She was a life time member of Rich Fork Baptist Church and treasurer for many years and a loyal member, achieving many honors. She was ordained a deaconess at First Baptist Church in Dunn, where lived for five years before returning to Thomasville.
She was born Aug. 25, 1903, and graduated from Mills Home. She was voted Pilot of the Year in 1969. She was noted for many acts of benevolence and touched many individual lives.
Surviving are four sisters, Dorcus C. Laws, Meredith C. Myers, Hannah C. Burgess, Margie C. Murphy of Thomasville; and a brother, Brown Clinard, of Thomasville. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Reva C. Snyder and Velva C. Freedle; and two brothers, Hoyle Clinard and Webb Clinard.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Dec. 19 at Rich Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Bryon Barker.
Memorials may be directed to Building Fund of Rich Fork Baptist Church, 3993 Old U.S. 29, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Thomas Edney Jr.
High Point - Thomas Reynolds Edney Jr., 37, of 1010 Bridges St., died Dec. 10, 1999, at his residence.
He was born on April 26, 1962, in Hendersonville, a son to Thomas Reynolds Edney Sr. and Frances Ledbetter Edne. He was married to April Watts Edney and was a former employee of Cheerwine Corp.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, Jonathan Arthur Boggs and Blake Thomas Edney of the home; his mother of Greensboro; his father of Asheboro; a sister, Pam Moore of Piedmont, S.C.; and three nieces, Tara, Heather and Lori Beth Moore, all of Piedmont, S.C.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service of High Point conducted by the Rev. Carroll Upton. Other times, the family will be at the residence. There will be no visitation.

S. Hunter
Morehead City - Stephen O. Hunter, 85, died Dec. 10, 1999, at Rose Manor Healthcare Center in Durham.
Hunter, a deacon in First Free Will Baptist Church in Morehead City, is survived by his wife, Ruby Hill Hunter, of the home; a daughter, Barbara Jean Bell of Goldsboro; three sons, Stephen O. Hunter Jr. of High Point, Rodney Carol Hunter of Newport News, Va., and Thomas Earl Hunter of Durham; a brother, Cyrus Hunter of Morehead City; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Free Will Baptist Church in Morehead City. Burial will be in Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Memorials may be directed to First Free Will Baptist Church, 10th & Bridges Street, Morehead City, N.C. 28557.

T. Jeffries
Fairforest, S.C. - Timothy Jeffries died Dec. 1, 1999.
Service was held Dec. 5 in Fairforest, S.C. He was a former employee at High Point Regional Hospital. Interment is in Heritage Memorial Gardens in Roebuck, S.C.

Robert Marsh Sr.
High Point - Robert Eugene (Gene) Marsh Sr., 76, of 201-A N. Rotary Drive, died Dec. 10, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born June 12, 1923, in Archdale, the son of Robert Doak and Virgie Yokley Marsh. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force and was with the B.F. Goodrich retail stores in South Carolina before returning to High Point. When he returned to High Point, he quickly became involved in the business and civic affairs of the community. He was a lifetime member of the Jaycees and received the Nick Lawrence Award in 1960. He was a former president and director of Jaycee Jollies. He was a partner in Mendenhall-Moore Realtors and at the time of his death was with Craven-Johnson-Pollock Realtors in sales. He was a former president of the High Point board of realtors and district vice president of the N.C. Association of Real Estate Boards. He taught four years in the Realtors Institute. He was featured in the Personality Profile in 1971. He helped organize Certified Property Management for North Carolina District 56 and served as president for two years. He was cited for his good nature and his community service. He was a former member of the Lions Club and was a senior life member of the High Point Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Archdale Friends Meeting.
He was married to Hazel McKinney and she survives of the home. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Robert Eugene (Gene) Marsh Jr. of Homer, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Dot Farlow of China Grove; a niece, Pam Karricker; and a nephew, Steve Farlow.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Archdale Friends Meeting by Pastor Scott A. Wagoner.
The family will receive friends at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Avenue from 7-8 tonight.
The High Point Realtors are requested to sit as a group.

William Morgan
High Point - William Cyrus “Willie” Morgan, 86, of Clinard Farms Road passed from this life Dec. 10, 1999, after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on W. Market Street (U.S. 421) in Colfax, where he was a member. Interment will follow at the Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was born on Sept. 5, 1913, in Guilford County and was retired from Cone Mills and the Guilford County public school system. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nellie Wood, and a son, Donald.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Morgan, of the home; a daughter, Jewel Wall and husband, Lee, of High Point; a son, Randall Morgan and wife, Vickie, of Asheboro; a niece, Yunoka King of High Point; a nephew, Arland Wood of Greensboro; and grandchildren, Leonard Wall and Keri and Lindsay Morgan.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel in Kernersville and other times at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
