Mary Rorie
High Point - Mrs. Mary Anne McNeil Rorie, 56, of 1212 Ragan Ave., died Dec. 9, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital where she had been a patient for 12 days.
She was born in High Point on April 14, 1943, a daughter of John Frank McNeil Sr. and Grace Young McNeil. A lifelong resident of High Point, she was a member of Living Water Baptist Church. Fraternally, she was a member and Marshall of Mary Davis Chapter #5, Order of Eastern Star. Her last employment was as a finisher at Woodmark Furniture. Her husband, James Thomas Rorie, and her parents, all preceded her in death. A half-sister, Iris Faye Baldwin, died Dec. 8, 1999.
Survivors include three sons, Curtis McNeil, Michael (Trina) McNeil and Adam Lee McNeil; two daughters, Mrs. Angela (Bobby) McCormick of High Point and Mrs. Robbin Goode of the home and her husband, Hubert, of Florida; two brothers, Johnny Frank McNeil Jr. of High Point and Adam Edward McNeil of Greensboro and half-brother, Michael Campbell, and wife of High Point; three sisters, Mrs. Johnnie Mae (Alfonzo) Thomas, Ms. Catherine McManus and Mrs. Pauline (James Robert) McManus of High Point; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five aunts, Mrs. Annie (Bishop William) Sturdivant, Mrs. Louise Young, Mrs. Willie Flemming, Mrs. Gladys Jones, all of High Point, and Mrs. Pearlie Mae Clemmons of Charlotte; two uncles, Bishop Joe E. (Eula Mae) Young of Greensboro and Arthur Hamilton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a host of nieces, among them, Robin Rivers of High Point; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Living Water Baptist Church by the Rev. Adolph Thomas and the Rev. Alfred Cheek. Burial will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Edna Scarlett
Thomasville - Mrs. Edna Hill Goins Scarlett, 81, a resident of Mt. Vista Health Park, formerly of Bryan Street, Thomasville, died Dec. 10, 1999, in the nursing center.
She was born April 19, 1918, in Randolph County, a daughter of Harris Hill and Ada Elbertson Hill. She was a homemaker. She was of the Wesleyan faith and attended First Church of the Nazarene. She was married Nov. 2, 1935, to Clyde W. Goins, who died Nov. 6, 1979. She later married Richard Scarlett, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Wade, and husband, Joe, of High Point; a son, Harold Goins and wife, Brenda, of Thomasville; two sisters, Ms. John (Luna) Hughes and Mrs. Mabel Sebastian, both of Thomasville; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with the Rev. Billy Carey and the Rev. John Holsenback officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. tonight and other times at the home of the son, Harold Goins, 342 Jarrett Road, Thomasville.
Paul Akins
High Point - Paul Akins, 75, of 301 Princeton Ave. died Dec. 12, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Jackson County, a son of Theodore James and Mimmie Coward Akins. He retired from the Blacksmith Shop. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church.
Surviving are his companion, Evelyn S. Gibson, of the home; three sons, Ron Akins of Thomasville, Larry Akins and Ernie Akins of Sylva; five stepdaughters, Kathy Pritchett, Carol Akins, Judy Johnson and Sandy Slaydon, all of High Point, and Teresa Duncan of Thomasville; a stepson, Ronnie Soles of High Point; four sisters, Mrs. Irene Parrish of Denton, Mrs. Mary Wilson of Thomasville, Mrs. Helen Bond of Trinity, and Mrs. Susie Sellers, all of High Point; three brothers, Jimmy Akins of Trinity, Junior Akins of Sylva, and Gene Akins of Thomasville; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Steve Jarvis. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Lexington - Mrs. Edna Mae Embler Allred of 305 Homewood Lane, 79, died Dec. 11, 1999, at her residence.

Lexington - Mrs. Shirley Irene Chandler Gabard, 69, of 160 Oakdale Lane died Dec. 13, 1999, at Wake Forest University Medical Center.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tyro Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the church.

Ethel McGee
High Point - Mrs. Ethel Louise McGee, 58, of 400 N. Main St., Sheraton Towers, died Dec. 13, 1999, at her home.

Kermit Marion
High Point - Kermit Wesley Marion, 81, of Branch Street, died Dec. 12, 1999, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.
He was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Surry County a son of Abram Dozier and Emma Hollyfield Marion, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Central High School and had worked in the hosiery and furniture industries, and was a master cabinet maker. He also had worked for Bell Aircraft Co. and during World War II was an aircraft inspector for the U.S. government. He was a member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Toth.
Also surviving are two sons, Kermit Michael Marion of High Point and William Ben Marion of Liberty; a daughter, Marcia Karen Marion Lavoie of Liberty; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Cameron Lavoie.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the residence of a son, Kermit M. Marion, 1311 Forrest St.

William Miller
Asheboro - William “Nick” Ivy Miller Jr., 81, died at 11:00 a.m. Dec. 12, 1999.

William Shields
High Point - William Allen Shields, 35, of 1212 E. Russell Ave. died Dec. 12, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 25, 1964, in Gaffney, S.C. A resident of High Point for 33 years, he was of the Holiness faith and was a member of the High Point Jaycees. He was employed with Leggett & Platt Inc. On Oct. 4, 1999, he married the former Sharon Norris, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are his mother, Rachel S. Painter and his stepfather, William Kenneth Painter, of 1212 E. Russell Ave.; a daughter, Shelby Marie Garrell of Archdale; two stepsons, Joshua Lee Crotts and Jeremy Charles Crotts, both of Archdale; three brothers, Thomas Ray Hensley, Raymond Edison Hensley and James Edward Hensley, all of High Point; and a sister, Mrs. Frances Mayers of Lexington.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service by the Rev. Tommy Garner. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
S. Starnes
Augustine, Fla. - Sherman R. Starnes, 70, of 3233 Turtle Creek Road, died Dec. 10, 1999, after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 10, 1929, in High Point, a son of Murphy and Leota Norman Starnes. He was a 1948 graduate of High Point High School and served 14 years in the U.S. Air Force. He attended Capital Institute of Technology in Washington, D.C., where he received a four-year degree in electrical engineering. He retired from ITT/Alcatel, in Raleigh, after 25 years of service. On Sept. 6, 1952, he married the former Betty Jean Campbell, who survives of the home.
Surviving are a son, Michael Starnes of Albuquerque; two brothers, J.D. Starnes of Thomasville and Carl Starnes of Stanfield; two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Frances) Scarborough and Mrs. Pat Bodenhamer, both of High Point.
Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements will be made by Cumby Funeral Service in High Point.

High Point - Mrs. Virginia Frances Carney Thompson, 90, died Dec. 13, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Burial will be in West Virginia at a later date.

Lexington - E. J. Wisdom, 73, of 101 Barker St. died Dec. 12, 1999, at his residence.

Joseph Bost
Archdale - Joseph Richard Bost, 87, of Graybrier Nursing and Retirement Center and formerly of 11105 N. Main St. died Dec. 15, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Feb. 22, 1912, in Guilford County a son of Joseph and Ester Perly Bost. He was a resident of Randolph County all his life. He worked in furniture and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Brewer, parents and a son, Pfc. Ralph C. Brewer, who died in action during World War II.
Surviving are a nephew, Guy Brewer and his wife, Pauline, of Archdale; two great-nieces, Sheila Shively and Donna Brewer, both of Archdale; three great-nephews, Ken Brewer, Darrell Brewer and Barry Brewer, all of High Point.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.
