Lexington - Jerry Kay Stewart, 56, of 1753 Old N.C. 109 died Dec. 5, 2000, at 9:20 p.m. at Community General Hospital in Thomasville.
He was born March 12, 1943, in Columbus County, a son of Corbit and Winnie Stewart, who preceded him in death. He was an employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries Plant D and attended Christian Cathedral. On Sept. 4, 1978, he married Linda Lambeth Stewart, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a son, Jerry Wayne Stewart of Lexington; two stepsons, Craig Lambeth of Thomasville and Chad McKeithan of Lexington; three brothers, Jimmy Stewart of Thomasville, Ronald Stewart of Cerro Gordo, and Jackie Stewart of Lexington; and six grandchildren, Samantha Stewart, Wayne Stewart Jr., Ashley Lambeth, Tiffany McKeithan, Cody Lambeth and Zane Lambeth.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Christian Cathedral by the Rev. Numa Highfill. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

S. Zimmerman Jr.
High Point - Samuel Zimmerman Jr., 57, formerly of 1304 Vernon St. departed this life at 5:20 a.m. Jan. 5, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 23, 1942, in Darlington, S.C., a son of Sam and Jessie Mae Pugh Zimmerman who preceded him in death. He was known to many as “Boss Man,” he was a fun, loving brother and friend, who would help you at a moment’s notice. He favored life as if it were a delectable food. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Quincy Zimmerman, and his sister, Ruby L. Zimmerman.
He leaves to celebrate his final flight four brothers, Laverne Zimmerman of High Point, Willie J. Zimmerman of Gibson, Julius Brown and Edward Brown, both of Timmonsville, S.C.; five sisters, Mary Quick (Stancil) of Trinity, Lois Dockery, Nellie Zimmerman, Queenesther Jones (Bill), and Joeann Dunham (Charles), all of High Point; two aunts, Roseale Jefferson and Lorine Bines of Timmonsville; a special family friend, Arthur Bracy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other special relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hargett-Gilmore Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel prior to the service and other times at the residence of Ms. Lois Dockery, 1304 Vernon St.
George Bethea
Greensboro - George W. Bethea, 52, of 514 Hill St. died Jan. 5, 2000, at Vencore Hospital.
He was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Dillon, S.C., a son of James R. and Margaret Wright Bethea. He was a farmer and was educated in the Dillon, S.C., public schools. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Clio, S.C. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Archie L. Bethea.
Surviving are a daughter, Miss Shirley Manning of High Point and Miss Teresa Manning of Dillon, S.C.; his mother, Mrs. Margaret W. Bethea; three brothers, James (Senter) Bethea, John (Ida) Bethea of High Point and Edward (Barbara) Bethea of Dillon; four sisters, Lottie Bethea, Shirley (Artis) Nicholson, Eddie M. Robinson of High Point and Mary (Willie) Boatwright of Dillon, S.C.; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Wright; and his paternal grandmother, Martha Bethea; four grandchildren, Shakerah Manning, Gregory Hamilton of High Point, DaMarcus Boatwright and Terrik Boatwright of Dillon, S.C.; aunts; and a host of uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends; a special brother-in-law, Artis Nicholson; and a special friend, Albert Warley.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Living Waters Baptist Church by the Rev. Adolph Thomas. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30-3 p.m. Sunday prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence of Margaret Bethea, 514 Hill St., High Point.
Ralph Davis
Newton - Ralph F. Davis, 78, of 3113 US 321 S., died Jan. 7, 2000, at his residence.
He was born May 3, 1921, in Catawba County a son of Carl and Rosa Withers Davis, who preceded him in death. He was a veteran of World War II serving in Greenland and South Pacific and a survivor of the sinking of the ship, “Dorchester,” on Feb. 3, 1943. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Maiden. He retired from Broyhill Furniture after 46 years as a spray operator.
Surviving are his wife, Vertie Starr Davis of the residence; a son, Randall Davis and his wife, Anne, of High Point; two sisters, Elva Auton of Maiden and Almetta Overcash of Newton; and three grandsons, the Rev. Eric Davis and his wife, Becky, of Clemmons, Scott Davis and Bradley Davis, both of High Point.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Maiden by the Rev. Jeff Clark and the Rev. Eric Davis. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Burke Mortuaries, Maiden.

Ruth Dowd
High Point - Mrs. Ruth Hill Dowd, 79, of 1431-B Stonehenge Road, Montgomery, Ala., died Jan. 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Jan 5, 1921, in Randolph County, a daughter of Dalton Lacy and Martha Jane Sawyer Hill. She was employed with Pilot Life while living in Trinity. She was a resident of Montgomery, Ala., for 42 years and was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Montgomery. She married Charles E. Dowd Sr., who preceded her in death in August 1995.
Surviving are a son, Charles E. Dowd Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Janice) Mann of Orlando, Fla.; her mother of Trinity; five grandchildren, Kathleen Dowd, Mary Caroline Dowd, Bobby Mann, Tommy Mann and Becky Mann; three brothers Herman Hill of Trinity, Joe Hill of Greensboro and Raymond Hill of Trinity; two sisters, Opal Helmstetler of Trinity and Lucy Hawkins of Troutman; and an uncle, Henry Sawyer.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. George Dowd. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Ala. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Thomasville - Harold Eugene Ensley, 78, of 190 Will Johnson Road died Jan. 7, 2000, at his residence.

James Hinkle Sr.
High Point - James Paul Hinkle Sr., 88, died Jan. 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following three weeks of hospitalization.
He was born July 11, 1911, in High Point, a son of David Marshall and Ollie Reed Hinkle. He retired from Henredon Furniture, where he worked as a master carver. He was a member of Ward Street Methodist Church and was a faithful member of the choir. He was married to Dorothy Taylor, who preceded him in death in 1999. He also was preceded in death by his beloved children, a son, James Paul Hinkle Jr., and a daughter, Evelyn Hinkle Cranford.
Surviving are a beloved daughter-in-law, Delphia L. Hinkle of High Point; four grandchildren, Brenda Hinkle Smith and her husband, Howard, of High Point, Deborah Hinkle Burchette of Trinity, James Paul Hinkle III and his wife, Stephanie, of Denton and Melinda Hinkle Skeen of Thomasville; eight great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a step-mother, Maude Hinkle of Denton; and loyal friends, Clyde Cranford and his wife, Mary.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by the Rev. Abraham Kim, the Rev. Jack Kayler and the Rev. Bobby Beck. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Delphia Hinkle, 1634 N.C. 62 West.

Mary Frye
Kernersville - Mrs. Mary Susie King Frye, 75, of 4745 High Point Road, Kernersville, died Jan. 7, 2000, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
She was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Patrick County, Va., to the late Martin and Lois Epperson King. She was retired from Tex Elastic Co., in Archdale and was a member of Brentwood Baptist Church in High Point.
Surviving are two sons, Tommy Frye of the home and Johnny Morris Frye and wife, Pat, of Archdale; two granddaughters, Tammy Anderson and husband, Ken, of Burlington and Julie Haithcox and husband, Darrell, of Siler City; a great-granddaughter, Caprice Haithcox of Siler City; three great-grandsons, Zachary Anderson and Alex Anderson, both of Burlington and Nick Haithcox of Siler City; a sister, Ada Knight of Union Cross; two brothers, Mayford King and Booker King, both of Union Cross; and a special nephew, Timmy King of Kernersville.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy with services conducted by the Rev. Ron Chapman. Burial will follow in the King Family Cemetery in Ararat, Va. Visitation will be held from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

William R. Kinsler, 62, of 2200 E. Green St., died Jan. 7, 2000, at his residence.

Robert Lee
High Point - Robert Asbury Lee Jr., 67, a resident of 400 N. Main St., died Jan. 8, 2000, at his residence after a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 2, 1932, in Guilford County, a son of Robert Asbury and Blanche Ingram Smith Sr. He had been a resident of High Point most of his life and most recent since 1991, moving from Columbia, S.C. He was a former employee of Colonial Motor Lines and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Air Force. Years ago he attended North Main Street Baptist Church. He was a member of the Springfield Friends Meeting and the High Point Lions Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Darrell (Karen) Rhoades of Wasilla, Alaska; a son, Robert Asbury Lee III of 12 Smith Ave., Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Don (Betty) Ingram of 7011 Bluewood Ct.; a brother, Joseph M. Lee of Montgomery, Ala.; and a grandson, Hunter Rhoades. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Chapman.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Terry G. Venable. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of the sister.

Ann Malenkos
High Point - Mrs. Ann Cook Malenkos of 1009-A Tipton St., died Jan. 5, 2000, in Williamston.
She was born in Surry County, the daughter of Robert A. and Sarah Cobbler Cook. She had been a resident of High Point most of her life and had retired from Friedman Fashions. She was a member of Christ Community Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, who died in 1939.
Surviving are a son, James Malenkos and his wife, Joan, of Williamston; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Mangum of Woodland, Calif.; a brother, Thomas Cook and his wife, Irene, of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Dr. James Malenkos III and his wife, Sherry, of Korea and Dr. Sarah Beth M. Larbarge and her husband, Michael, of Tampa, Fla.; and six great-grandchildren, J.W., Justin, Alex, Fletcher, Christian and Quinn.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sechrest Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jeffrey P. Palmer. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Winston-Salem. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday.

Opal Severt
Mrs. Opal Milton Jester Severt, 85, of 204 Fisher Ave., died Jan. 8, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born in Alba, Texas, Sept. 27, 1914, a daughter of the late Charlie M. and Lida Dunlap Jester. She was a member of Westchester Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Robert W. Severt of the home; a son, Robert Donald and his wife, Iris; two sisters, Edwena Sparks of Clarksville, Texas and Jackie Jones of Ardmore, Okla.; a brother, Homer Austin of Clarksville.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Eastchester Avenue with the Rev. Eric Peacock officiating. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, 1412 Bridges Drive.

Tech. Sgt. Jacob Gilbert Snider (retired), 57, died Jan. 7, 2000.

Willie Tate
Willie Jasper Tate, 86, of The Evergreens, formerly of 400 Steele St., Gibsonville, died Jan. 8, 2000, at his residence.
He was the son of the late Eddie Lee Tate and Rosa Voss Tate. He retired from Minneola Plant of Cone Mills. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye McKinney Tate.
Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Patsy Tate Peterson of High Point; a sister, Ms. Alene Tate of Gibsonville; a brother, Fred Tate of Venice, Fla.; two grandchildren, Paul Stewart and his wife, Dana, of High Point and Sheila Stewart Tysinger and her husband, Jeff, of Denton; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Stewart of High Point and Brandon Tysinger of Denton.
A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Gibsonville City Cemetery by the Rev. William Grant of Beacon Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight at Bartlett Funeral Home, Gibsonville, and other times at 309 South Joyner, Gibsonville.

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Surratt Taylor, 62, died Jan. 8, 2000.

Jimmy Wilder
Jimmy Dee Wilder, 64, died Jan. 6, 2000, at Wake Forest University Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
He was born in Thomasville Dec. 13, 1935, a son of Daniel Thomas Wilder and Laura Shirley Wilder. He was a lifelong resident of Thomasville. He was a graduate of Thomasville High School and attended High Point University. He served in the National Guard. He was a former owner of JIDO Industries in High Point and was president of J.W. Express. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Thomasville Masonic Lodge #214 and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a former member of the Thomasville Jaycees and the Thomasville Civitans. On Dec. 19, 1959, he was married to Miss Shirley Ann Rollins, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Juan (Ann) Cranford, Mrs. Ray (Carol) Batson and Mrs. John (Shirley) McLemore, all of Thomasville; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. David Best and the Rev. Joel Smith. The body will remain at the funeral home till service time.

Annie Briggs
High Point - Mrs. Annie Elizabeth McGee Briggs, 75, of 824-A Old Winston Road died Jan. 9, 2000, at her home.
She was born Sept. 6, 1924 in Forsyth County, the daughter of Charlie and Annie Marshall McGee. She was employed with Chic-Fil-A Inc. and was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother and a devoted grandmother. On Aug. 28, 1947, she married Harold Ray Briggs Sr. and he survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Harold R. Briggs Jr. and his wife, Anita, of High Point and Tim Briggs of High Point; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Bowman of High Point and Mrs. Doris Mabe of Winston-Salem; a brother, Hal McGee of Germantown; and two grandsons, Kevin Briggs and Stephen Briggs.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sechrest Chapel on E. Lexington Avenue by the Reverend Jimmy Dillon. Interment will be in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the home of her son Harold R Briggs Jr., 2210 Hickswood Road, High Point.
