Mary Johnson
Lillington - Mary G. Johnson, 84, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Harnett Manor Nursing Home.
She was a naive of Harnett County. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Everette Johnson.
Surviving are a son, George C. Johnson of Lillington; two sisters, Edna Gross and Frances Wilson, both of High Point; two brothers, Albert Gross of Archdale and Walter Gross of Badin Lake; and one granddaughter.
Funeral was held 1 p.m. Monday at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel by the Rev. Bill Williams. Burial was in Westview Memorial Gardens.
Mary McPherson
Trinity - Mary Elizabeth Davis McPherson, 72, of Gray Brier Nursing Home, 116 Lane Drive, died Jan. 16, 2000.
She was born Aug. 7, 1927, in High Point, a daughter of William and Mary Johnson Davis, who preceded her in death. She was of the Baptist faith. She also was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.
Surviving are two sister-in-laws, Mrs. Idell Davis and Alberta Davis; a devoted niece, Mrs. Jean Spencer; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hargett-Gilmore Funeral Service by the Rev. Leon Davis.
Harriet Maxwell
High Point - Mrs. Harriet Ford Maxwell, 60, of 1719 Temberry Road died Jan. 19, 2000.

Lorene Younts
Archdale - Mrs. Lorene Smith Younts, 89, formerly of N.C. 62, Trinity, died at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 19, 2000, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center following two years of declining health.
She was born Nov. 29, 1910, in Stokes County, a daughter of Asa M. and Mary Jane Gibson Smith. She was a resident of the Trinity vicinity most of her life. She retired from Swaim Supply in 1975, and was a member of Trinity Memorial United Methodist Church, the Friendly Sunday School Class and a member of the Sunshine Fellowship Club. She was a former member of the church choir and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Archdale and Trinity and also a member of the Archdale-Trinity Extension Homemakers Club. In 1948, she was married to Dallas Ray Younts, who preceded her in death Aug. 10, 1981.
Surviving are three brothers, Marvin R. Smith of Greensboro, Lester W. Smith of 10334 N. Main St., Archdale and John Eugene Smith of 204 Ashland St., Archdale.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale by the Rev. Janice F. Combs. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Darphine Adams
Archdale - Mrs. Darphine Frances Barnhardt Adams, 72, formerly of 215 Cornell St., High Point, died Jan. 20, 2000, at GrayBrier Nursing & Retirement Center.
She was born April 26, 1927, in Guilford County, a daughter of Wade and Mamie Whiteheart Barnhardt. She was a lifetime resident of the High Point vicinity. She was a retired employee of USFI, where she was employed for 25 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She was married to Emory Ellis Adams, who preceded her in death in 1967.
Surviving are five sons, Larry Ellis Adams of Trinity, Robert Stevenson Adams of Denton, Virgil Lee Adams, Clifton Ray Adams and David Eugene Adams, all of High Point; two daughters, Frances Louise Pulliam and Judy Ann Harris, both of High Point; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Howard Moore. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Lona Baldwin
Asheboro - Mrs. Lona Agnes Baldwin, 66, of 4247 Old Marlboro Road, died Jan. 19, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Montgomery County and was preceded in death by her husband, W. Harvey Baldwin.
Surviving are three daughters, Ida Elaine Caraway of Louisiana., Agnes Cook and Angela Balwin, both of Sophia; four sons, Harvey Baldwin Jr. of Ramseur, Michael Baldwin of Sophia, Stephen Baldwin of Norman and Jerry Lee Baldwin of the residence; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Pate of Creedmoore and Josephine Owens of Troy; and a brother, Albert Hough of Candor.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Gladys Brown
Stanley - Mrs. Gladys Reid Brown, 87, formerly of High Point, died Jan. 19, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
She was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Denton, a daughter of William Kenneth and Dora Surrett Reid. She was a resident of High Point for 65 years. On May 4, 1932, she married Coy Lee Brown Sr., who preceded her in death. She and her husband owned and operated Brown’s Early American Furniture Store on N. Main Street, High Point, for 40 years. She was a resident of Stanley Total Living Center for the last three years. She was a member of Oakview United Methodist Church, High Point, and the United Methodist Women. She also was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Coy Lee Brown Jr. and a sister, Vienna Russell.
Surviving are a son, William Kenneth Brown and his wife, Shirley, of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Glenda Brown of High Point; a brother, William Booth Reid and his wife, Opal, of High Point; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today, at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. E.A. “Sonny” Reavis Jr. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be today after the service at the funeral home.

Melvin Kearse
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Melvin Kearse, 66, died Jan. 17, 2000.
He was born in High Point, N.C., a son of Fletcher and Mary Edwards Kearse, who preceded him in death. He graduated from William Penn High School and attended North Carolina A&T State University. He served in the U.S. Air Force, 1957-1961. He was an active member of Apostolic Gospel Church of Christ, where he was a member and chairman of the deacon board, Sunday school superintendent, member and president of the male chorus and a member of the board of trustees. He retired from the New York City Transit system in 1995, after 23 years of employment. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilhelmina Smalls Kearse.
Surviving are two daughters, April (Timothy) Bell and Regina (Eric) Britt; a son, Billy of New York; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Kearse Eury of High Point and Alice Kearse Goolsby of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Apostolic Gospel Church of Christ. Burial will be in a local cemetery.

Jacquelin LeBlanc
Lexington - Ms. Jacqueline McCulloch LeBlanc, 74, of S. Main Street died Jan. 20, 2000, at Community General Hospital after declining health of three months.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Harriett Maxwell
High Point - Mrs. Harriett Maxwell, 60, of 1719 Ternberry Road died Jan. 19, 2000, at her residence.
She was a graduate of Limestone College.
Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Jacob Alexander Maxwell; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Gilbert M. and Sheri Maxwell and Morgan Ford and Cheryl Maxwell; a brother, Thomas Ford, and his wife, Bobbie, of Orangeburg, S.C.; three sisters, Eunice Ford Gamble, and her husband, J.P., of Lane, S.C., Christine Ford Gaines of Greensboro and Ann Ford Dutton and her husband, Bob, of Hendersonville.
Memorial service will be held at a later date at Lake Junaluska.

Joseph Parsons Jr.
High Point - Joseph L. Parsons Jr., 73, of 319 Louise Ave. died Jan. 20, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following 12 years of declining health.
He was born in Wilkes County, Nov. 27, 1926, a son of Joseph Leinza and Maggie Sheppard Parson Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries. He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed sports. He was of the Missionary Baptist faith. On Aug. 1, 1947, he married Ruth Higgins, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Patricia Jane Clawson of Hickory; a son, Michael Eugene Parsons of the residence; a sister, Virginia Milam of Wilkesboro; a brother, Lee Edward Parsons of Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Paul Sparks. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Marie Pickard
Jamestown - Mrs. Marie Cox Pickard, 76, of 5401 Harvey Road died Jan. 19, 2000, at Beacon Place at Hospice of Greensboro.
She was a member of Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church for 49 years, and retired from Moores Grocery Store, Kivett Drive. She was an avid quilter. She was preceded in death by a son, Allen Pickard.
Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Pickard of the residence; a son, Tom Pickard and his wife, Jane, of Southmont; a daughter, Paula Landreth and her husband, Jim, of Greensboro; a brother, Elder Richard Cox, and his wife, Sarah, of Thomasville; a granddaughter, Cindie Marshall, and her husband, Eric; two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Erica Marshall; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel by Elder Stephen Nichols. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Mattie Stanford
High Point - Mrs. Mattie Pate Stanford, 89, of 367 James Road died Jan. 20, 2000 at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Dec. 11, 1910, in Chesterfield, S.C., a daughter of William F. and Minnie Stanton Pate. She was a resident of High Point most of her life, and retired from North State Telephone Co. after 35 years of service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. On Jan. 3, 1932, she married Terry C. Stanford, who preceded her in death Jan. 16, 1995.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by the Rev. Mark E. Curtis. Entombment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Garland Watson
High Point - Garland Talmadge Watson, 86, of 1714-C N. Centennial St. died Jan. 19, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born May 15, 1913, in Alleghany County, a son of Jessse Mack and Alice Irvin Watson. He was a member of the National Guard and was a self-employed painting contractor. He attended Springfield Friends Meeting. On Oct. 6, 1934, he married the former Myra Stroud, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer Watson and Hobert Watson.
Also surviving are a son, Talmadge Watson of Pasadena, Md.; a daughter, Mrs. Jackie Albertson of Trinity; and three grandchildren.

Lexington - Ann McDonald Beck, 50, of Brown St. died at 11:31 p.m. Jan. 20, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.

James Brown Sr.
Kernersville - James LeRoy Brown Sr., 75, of 5115 Hillwood Drive died Jan. 21, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 24, 1924, a son of John T. and Lola Bass Brown. He was retired from Western Electric and was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Union Cross Baptist Church and the Horneytown Fire Department. He was married to Frances Smith, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two daughters, Ms. Anna Marie Brown of Arlington, Texas, and Ms. Holly Frances Brown of High Point; a son, James L. “J.B.” Brown Jr. of the residence; a brother, Earle G. Brown and his wife, Emma, of Burlington; and three grandchildren, Adam and Eric Brown and Ashton Mashburn.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by Dr. Chuck Towery. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Winston-Salem. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Lula Brown
High Point - Mrs. Lula Craven Brown, 79, of 119 Horneytown Road died Jan. 20, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Davidson County, a daughter of John William and Treva Alice Davis Craven. She attended Jones Business College and was a certified nursing assistant. She was activities director at Maryfield Nursing Home and Liberty House Nursing Home in Thomasville. She was of the Baptist faith. On July 1, 1939, she married Harold Tillman Brown, who preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1982. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Roy G. (Carolyn) Patterson and two brothers.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ricky (Aneita Lee) Andrews of High Point and Mrs. Lewis J. (Becky) Hudson of Kernersville; two sisters, Mrs. E.L. (Thelma) Hodgin of Greensboro and Mrs. Theldred (Betsy) Wood of High Point; a brother, Robert S. Craven and his wife, Betty, of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; eight step-grandchildren and a great-grandchild, Amber Kincaid, adopted by love.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Archdale Chapel by the Rev. Riley E. Puckett. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 1655 Banbridge Road, Kernersville.
