Ila McDuffie
Kernersville - Mrs. Ila Mae Musten McDuffie, 85, died Jan. 23, 2000, at K.B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.
She was born in Forsyth County, May 31, 1914, a daughter of Amos and Minnie Hull Musten. She retired from Belk-Beck department store of High Point, after 20 years of service. She also worked for several years with Maxway Stores of Kernersville. She was a lifelong member of Kernersville Moravian Church, where she was a member for more than 40 years and a member of the Morning Circle Women Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and a sister.
Surviving are a son, Dale O. McDuffie and his wife, Jan, of Kernersville; a daughter, Myra M. Yeatts and her husband, Tom, of Danville, Ky.; three sisters, Ivola Fulp and Levana Joyce, both of Winston-Salem, and Goldie Turner of Kernersville; two brothers, C.H. Musten and A.R. Musten, both of Kernersville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pierce Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Don Winters of Kernersville Moravian Church. Burial will be in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.

Allan Ray Mabe
High Point - Allan Ray Wakefield Mabe, 68, of 9139 Mariondale Drive died Jan. 24, 2000, at his residence.
He was born June 19, 1931, in Guilford County, a son of Marion and Viola Ridge Mabe. He was a resident of High Point all his life. In 1993, he retired from Leaseway Transportation Inc. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Teamsters Local #391. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member of the adult men’s Sunday school class and was a deacon. On Sept. 2, 1951, he married Joan Seward, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are his mother of High Point; three daughters, Mrs. Sherry Mabe Gordon and her husband, Kirby, of Thomasville, Mrs. Brenda Mabe Grubb and her husband, Wayne, of High Point, and Mrs. Diane Mabe Collins and her husband, Marty, of High Point; a sister, Mrs. Shirley Dawkins of High Point; two brothers, Michael “Mickey” Mabe of Trinity and Ronald “Ronnie” Mabe of Lexington; six grandchildren, Amber Stevens McBride and her husband, David, Mandy Steven, Jeremy and Travis Grubb, Jared and Whitney Collins; and one great-grandson, Maison McBride.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pine Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Tripp, the Rev. Franklin Fox and the Rev. John Long. Burial will be in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point.

Luther Medlin Sr.
Greensboro - Luther Reese Medlin Sr., 93, died Jan. 6, 2000.
He was born in Sept. 11, 1906 in High Point, a son of Samuel Jackson and Cornelia Jane Everhart Medlin. He was educated in the public schools for High Point, and graduated from High Point College, now High Point University, with a bachelor of arts degree. He earned a master of arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and completed additional graduate study. In 1968, High Point College honored him with a doctor of humanities degree. He also studied in the school system in Russia in the 1960’s.
He spent more than 42 years in education. He taught high school history first in Belmont for four years, then was named principal of South High School in Gastonia, where he served for four years. He was asked to organize a school for Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia. After this experience, he was invited to become principal of Central Junior High School, Greensboro, where he served 16 years. He was appointed principal of the new Walter Hines Page Senior High School. On September 1967, he assumed the presidency of Guilford Technical Institute, now Guilford Technical Community College, retiring in 1975.
He was a faithful member of churches in the cities where he lived, Welch Memorial, High Point, First Methodist, Gastonia and West Market Street United Methodist Church, Greensboro, where he served on the administrative board. He was a Sunday school teacher of the Olive Hardin Class and the Fellowship Class.
His civic activities included the Mental Health Clinic and the Domestic Relations Court of Greensboro. He held offices of the local and state Civitans and was president of Civitan International 1956-57.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Peden Medlin; a son, Luther Reese Medlin Jr. and his wife, Pamela; two grandsons, Luther Reese Medlin III and John Christian Medlin; three step-grandchildren Angie Freeman, Jack Freeman and Natalie Freeman; one niece; and three nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church, Jan. 8, 2000, by the Rev. Randy Waugh. Burial was in Westminster Gardens Cemetery.

Gordon Perry
Thomasville - Gordon Hamlet Perry, 84, of 1713 Burton Road died Jan. 24, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born May 4, 1915, in Chatham County, a son of James Jeter and Mamie Hamlet Perry, who preceded him in death. He was a resident of Thomasville most of his life and retired from Corrugated Specialties Inc., High Point. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church, High Point. On Aug. 24, 1941, He married the former Rachel Cates, who survives of the residence. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Perry Parton.
Also surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Perry Moss and her husband, Stanton, of Kernersville; a granddaughter, Jennifer Schrock and her husband, Jon; two grandsons, Gordon Stanton Moss and Richard Ian Moss; and a great-grandson, Brent Kinley.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Raymond C. Needham. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.
Carolyn Pouncey
Thomasville - Mrs. Carolyn Stout Pouncey, 72, of Johnsontown Road died Jan. 23, 2000, in Evergreen Nursing Home, Greensboro.

Beulah Ray
Robbins - Mrs. Beulah Copeland Ray, 97, of 564 Sunset Drive died Jan. 23, 2000, in Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center, Archdale.
She was a native of Moore County, a retired school teacher and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Clarence Ray, and her son-in-law, C. Worth Winslow.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Ray Winslow of Jamestown; three sons, Jerry B. Ray of Atlanta, Harold F. Ray of Seagrove and Elbert C. Ray of Robbins; two sisters, Ethel C. Pelty of Mt. Clemmons, Mich. and Connie C. Ritter of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church (where she was a member) by the Rev. Earl Dulaney and the Rev. Edgar Armfield Jr. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Kennedy Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Elbert Ray, 706 Simmons Road.

Aetna Ruth
Lincolnton, Ga. - Ms. Aetna Davis Ruth, 75, of Lincolnton, Ga. died Jan. 21, 2000, at the Lake Crossing Health Center.
She was born in Guilford County, N.C., and graduated from Jamestown High School. She was a former Eckerds employee and a member of First Baptist Church in Interlachen, Fla.
Surviving are one son, John Ruth Jr. of Lincolnton; one daughter, Linda L. Sparks of Lincolnton; two step-sisters, Shelby Fink of Jamestown, N.C., and Bonnie Coble of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Whitehall United Methodist Church Cemetery in Randleman, N.C.

Clifford Swain
Thomasville - Clifford Allen Swain, 84, of 304 Cox Ave. died Jan. 22, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
He was born July 10, 1915, in Guilford County, a son of William Robert and Myra Allen Swain. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II. He was employed with Crawford Sprinkler of Charlotte, High Point Sprinkler of High Point; and retired from Union Camp of Jamestown. He was a member of Thomasville Senior Citizens, a senior volunteer with Community General Hospital, and a volunteer with home delivered meals of Davidson County Senior Services. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the adult men’s Bible class. On Oct. 19, 1939, he married Ruby Parker, who died Oct. 18, 1990.
Surviving are three daughters, Ms. Rebecca Swain of Jamestown, Mrs. Fred T. (Mary Helen) Potts of Thomasville and Ruth Votava of Spokane, Wash.; two sons, William Robert Swain and his wife, Beth, of Oakboro, and Daniel G. Swain and his wife, Julie B., of Welcome; and nine grandchildren.

Thomasville - Mrs. Amanda Turner Triplette, 39, of 348 Bud Kanoy Road, died Jan 22, 2000, at her residence.
She was born July 17, 1960, in Davidson County, a daughter of William K. Turner and Barbara Ann Bennick Turner. She was employed with St. Josephs of the Pines. On Oct. 23, 1981, she married Ronnie Darrell Triplette, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are her parents of Thomasville; two daughters, Barbie Rose Brinkley of Lexington, and Catherine Reneé White of Denton; a son, Billy Joe Watts of Thomasville; two sisters, Melissa Long of High Point, and Tonya Payne of Thomasville; three brothers, William Dwayne Turner, Timothy Ray Turner and Toby Damond Turner, all of Thomasville.
