McLendon Smith
High Point - McLendon Smith, 52, of 607 Cross St. died Sept. 21, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born March 8, 1947, in Anson County, a son of Charlie and Cora Mae Lindsey Smith. He attended Anson County School in Liesiville and was a member of Bessie Chapel AME Zion Church in Liesiville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charlie Smith.
Surviving are four sons, Kenny Hough, Linden Smith, Aaron Smith and William Lindsey; six brothers, William Smith, Benjamin Smith, Billy Smith, Machael Smith, Darren Smith and Lee Marshell Smith; 12 sisters, Alberta Caple, Janice Bennett, Betty Smith, Christine Smith, Tracy Robinson, Katherine Smith, Johnsie Bennett, Selen Sullivant, Brenda Little, Patricia Jacobs, Jackie and Donna Smith; his maternal grandparents, William and Ellen Lindsey; six grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hargett-Gilmore Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Maurice Brown. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Bertha Warfford
Lexington - Mrs. Bertha Lemma Swicegood Warfford, 88, of Michael Road died at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22, 1999, at her residence after an illness of three years and a serious illness of three months.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Sandy Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Thomasville - Mrs. Idarea Kepley Beaty, 54, of 513 Jarrett St. died at 11:30 p.m. Sept. 23, 1999, at Community General Hospital.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Family Funeral Care Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Dorothy Gwynne
Denton - Mrs. Dorothy Gray Owen Gwynne, 90, died Sept. 24, 1999.
Graveside memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Lexington City Cemetery.

Lola Kimsey
Sophia - Mrs. Lola Farlow Kimsey, 98, of Graybrier Nursing and Retirement Center in Trinity, formerly of Mt. Gilead Church Road, died Sept. 24, 1999, at the nursing facility.
She was born Sept. 26, 1900, in Randolph County, a daughter of Thomas E. and Mary Walker Farlow. She had been a Randolph County resident most of her life. She was a 1922 graduate of Trinity High School and attended Guilford College. She had taught in the Randolph County school system at New Market Elementary School. She was a member of Flint Hill United Church of Christ, where she held various positions in the church. She was married to Silas Kimsey, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Alice Farlow of Trinity; two nieces; and six nephews.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Flint Hill United Church of Christ by the Rev. Jack Clark and the Rev. Harold Shives. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale and other times at the home of her niece, Mrs. Nancy Burrow, 3823 Mt. Gilead Church Road.
William McCaskill
Thomasville - William Eric McCaskill, 49, of Lacy Helper Road died Sept. 22, 1999, at Community General Hospital.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Edward MacEldowney
Surfside Beach, S.C. - Edward Thomas MacEldowney, 59, died Sept. 24, 1999, in Myrtle Beach.
Funeral will be 5 p.m. Sunday at GoldFinch Funeral Home Beach Chapel in Murrells Inlet. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Dorothy Maynard
King - Miss Dorothy Cox Maynard, 83, of Senic View Rest Home died Sept. 24, 1999.
She was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Winston-Salem, a daughter of John Thomas and Nora Cox Maynard. She lived her adult life in High Point. She retired from Adams Millis Corp. after 45 years of service. She was a longtime member of Green Street Baptist Church.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Joan Winfrey and her husband, Larry, of Winston-Salem; one nephew, Len Hensley and his wife, Barbara, of King; and several great-nephews, families and cousins.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Chapel, E. Lexington Ave., by Dr. Elliot Stewart. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Rebecca Mendenhall
Wilson - Miss Rebecca Jean Mendenhall, 81, died Sept. 22, 1999, at Wilson Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 19, 1918, in Greensboro, a daughter of Edward E. Sr. and Ida Allred Mendenhall. She was a member of the High Point Friends Meeting.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. W.C. “Ruth” Burton and Mrs. H.E. “Margaret” Johnson, both of Asheville and 10 nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at High Point Friends Meeting by the Rev. David Kingrey. Visitation will follow the service at the church. A private burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Greensboro.

Kathalene Wells
Des Moines, Iowa - Mrs. Kathalene Wells, 75, of 4616 Hickman Road died Sept. 20, 1999, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from heart and respiratory failure.
She was born and raised in Asheboro and moved to Ottumwa in 1956, where she was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Wally Wells of Des Moines; a daughter, Patty Wells of Washington, Iowa; four grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Travis and Kelsey; two sons, Terry R. Wells of Des Moines and Jeffrey Wells of Soranton; and a brother, James Harper of Lake Wales, Fla.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. today in Ottumwa Cemetery.
Mertie Kearns
High Point - Mrs. Mertie Lou Jackson Kearns, 78, of 515 Oakview Rd. died Sept. 25, 1999.
She was born Aug. 8, 1921 in Camden County, Ga. A daughter of Clarence Leon and Sadie Estelle Joiner Jackson and had lived in High Point most of her life. For a number of years she was associated with big Bear Food Store and later retired from K-Mart foods. She was a member of Oakview Methodist Church, the Overby/Prevatte Sunday School Class and a life-time member and past president of the United Methodist Women. She was also a Girl Scout leader. She was married to W.T. Kearns who preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1988.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Floyd (Nancy) White of 112 Mohawk Ct.; two sons; Jerry W. Kearns of 226 Willie Bodenheimer Rd. and Ernest O. Kearns of 3607 Lake Shore Drive; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Oakview United Methodist Church by Rev. Sonny Reavis. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral. The family will be at the funeral home Sunday night form 7 until 8:30 p.m.

Randy Lewis
Winston-Salem - Mr. Randy Lewis, 45, died Sept. 25, 1999 at his residence following a year of declining health.
He was born in High Point, May 9, 1954, a son of James E. Lewis, Jr. and Bobbie Kinney Lewis. He was a Air Force Veteran and worked in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. He was a member of High Point Friends Meeting.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Sprye Lewis of the home; two daughters, Stephanie Lewis of Thomasville and Anna Lewis of the home; a son, Paul Lewis of High Point; his mother of High Point; a brother, Steve Lewis of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren.
There will not be a memorial service. Memorials should be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive High Point, N.C. 27262. Harold C. Davis Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Alice Peele
High Point - Mrs. Alice Taylor Peele, 92, a resident of the Wesleyan Manor Retirement Center died Sept. 25 at the manor.
She was born Jan. 18, 1907, in Surry County. A daughter of Walter Ambrose and Candice Cobbler Taylor, she had been a High Point resident since 1938 and was self-employed as a seamstress. She was a member of Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Kernersville. She was married to Ellis Kelly Peele who died in 1941. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mecia Lovette; a son, Otis Peele; a sister, Emily Collins; five brothers, Roy Taylor, John Taylor, Coolidge Taylor, Colonel Taylor and Paul Taylor.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Doris Perdue of Jamestown; three sisters, Lola Clark of Grapevine Tx., Ruby Turner and Pearl Phillips both of Petersberg, Va.; nine grandchildren; a roommate, Leada Lowman, whom she loved dearly and many friends at the Wesleyan Manor.
Funeral will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by Elder John Lee.
Interment will be in the High Point Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Roger Williams, Donald Williams, Justin Atkinson, Matt Atkinson, Ryan Becher and Josh Atkinson.
