Shirley Layton
Greensboro - Mrs. Shirley Layton, 62, died Feb. 6, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 10, 1938, in High Point, a daughter of Dossie Crawford Sr. and Zelma Hedgecock Phillips. She attended Jamestown High School and High Point University. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband of 36 years, James E. Layton of the residence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn L. and Wayne Spillman of Greensboro, and Jamie K. and John Tice III, of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Jimmy Spillman, Tommy Spillman and Chace Spillman, all of Greensboro; and four sisters and brothers-in-law, Nora Lee and Dale Welborn, Elaine P. and Richard Shaver, Jeanne P. and E. Vance Wilson and Peggy P. and James P. Wallace, all of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Louise Lee
High Point - Mrs. Louise Terry Lee, 70, of Sheraton Towers, 400 N. Main St. departed this world to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, Feb. 7, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born July 7, 1929, in Chatham County. She was employed by Montgomery Paper Box and Clarendon Industries of High Point.
Surviving are a son, Ronald Gary Lee Jr. of High Point; three grandsons, Jason Lee of High Point, Nathan Lee and Jeremy Yerdon of Badin Lake; and a brother, Wade Terry of New Ellington, S.C.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her son Gary, 519 Roseland Drive.

Myrtle Maners
High Point - Mrs. Myrtle Anderson Maners, 93, of 2005 Guyer St. died Feb. 7, 2000, in Morristown, Tenn.
She was born Feb. 5, 1907, in Davie County, a daughter of James Garfield and Alice Tobitha Tutterow Anderson. She was married to Herman F. Maners Jr., who preceded her in death. She was a member of Montlieu United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Maners Chamberlin of Morristown, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Mae Owings of Mocksville and Mrs. Earle Jones of Winston-Salem; a brother, J. Millard Anderson of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Lisa Diane Everhart, D.L. Everhart and Henry B. Everhart, all of High Point; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, by the Rev. Nathan T. Snider. Burial will be in Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, Mocksville. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 310 Nutwood Circle, Jamestown.

Manny Phillips
Lexington - Manny Edward Phillips of Centerclair Nursing Home, formerly of Crotts Drive, died Feb. 8, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after one year of declining health.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

David Sams
Fancy Gap - David Wayne Sams, 42, died Feb. 6, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Ridge Funeral Home.

Shirley Scott
Lexington - Mrs. Shirley J. Scott, 58, of Clyde Drive died Feb. 6, 2000, at her residence.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rachel Strick
Lexington - Mrs. Rachel Myers Strickland, 77, of Fisher Road died Feb. 8, 2000, at her residence after an illness of one month.
Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Thursday in Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at 104 Fisher Road.
Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Angel
High Point - Joseph Arthur Angel, 87, of 608 Hawthorne Ave., died Feb. 3, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 20, 1912, in Macon County, a son of Arthur and Florence Love Angel. He lived in High Point since 1947. He was employed with the Guilford County Schools in the maintenance department. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the New Guinea Campaign. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of First Baptist Church for 40 years. He spent his younger years in the Children’s Home. He married Lois Franks, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four daughters, Betty Jo Leach, Mary Angel Jarrell, Sara Lynn Angel and Donna Marie Angel, all of High Point; five sons, Donald Ray Angel of Kernersville, William Gaither Angel of Asheboro, James Calvin Angel, Lonnie Eugene Angel and Kenneth Craig Angel, all of High Point; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by the Rev. Ashby Brown, the Rev. Mike Smith, Deacon Joe Smith, and the Rev. Dale Collingwood. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104.
The Angel family wishes to thank the nurses and entire staff on the sixth floor of the High Point Regional Hospital. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Stephen Ford.

Mae Bailey
High Point - Ms. Mae Bailey, 70, of SunBridge of the Triad died Feb. 1, 2000, at the home.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Sechrest Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Fannie Bowman
Kernersville - Mrs. Fannie Stidhams Bowman, 88, of 562 Lori Lane died Feb. 2, 2000, at her residence.
She was born in Jefferson County, May 31, 1911, a daughter of Arthur and Susie Blevins Stidhams.
Surviving are two daughters, Deloris (Robert) Billings of Lexington and Louellen (Sammy) Gunter of Archdale; two brothers, Eddie (Dee) Bowman of Mt. Airy and Charlie (Linda) Bowman of Thomasville; a brother, Lee Stidhams of W. Jefferson; 29 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pierce Funeral Home Chapel, Kernersville, by Brother Don Collins. Burial will be in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Lillian Bullington
Greensboro - Mrs. Lillian Ashby Carroll Bullington, 77, of 1311 Guest St. died Feb. 1, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Stokes County, a daughter of Jesse James and Jettie Mabe Ashby. She was a resident of Greensboro for 24 years and was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener and a homemaker. On Jan. 17, 1976, she married James “Jim” Bullington, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are four sons, Charles Carroll of Kernersville, David Carroll of Jamestown, Malcolm Carroll of Apalachicola, Fla., and Timothy Carroll of Fayetteville; a stepson, Roger Bullington of Zepher Hills, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Diana Lovette of Charlotte; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gurney “Buck” Ashby of Sophia.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Bob Metters. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Nina Byers
High Point - Mrs. Nina Curtis Byers, formerly of Oneka Street, died Feb. 1, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham.
She was born in Cherokee County, S.C., a daughter of Steven and Mary Brown Curtis. She had resided in High Point more than 50 years and was a member of First Emmanuel Baptist Church. She was employed in homes of private families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Shadrack Byers; her parents; seven sisters; and two brothers.
Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Isabelle Hoey of High Point; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church and other times at the residence of Mrs. Hoey, 1707 Cedrow Drive.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Crotts
Archdale - Carl Roosevelt Crotts, 93, of Tru-Care Assisted Living, formerly of 4828 Kennedy Road, Trinity, died at 6:25 p.m. Feb. 1, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born June 24, 1906, in Randolph County, a son of William Thomas and Roanna Loflin Crotts. He was a lifelong resident of Trinity, and was a former employee of Burlington Industries and a retiree of Myrtle Desk Inc. He was a member of Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, the Men’s Bible Class, and had served as Sunday school superintendent, lay leader and caretaker of the church cemetery. On Oct. 15, 1938, he married the former Pauline Sumner, who preceded him in death, Nov. 20, 1996.
Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Beverly Ann Crotts of High Point; a son, Carl Benson Crotts and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rockingham; three brothers, J. Wayne Crotts, Roy W. Crotts and E. Reece Crotts, all of Trinity; two sisters, Mrs. Reid (Pearl) Cole of Thomasville and Mrs. Robert (Lillie) Ennis of Trinity; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church by the Rev. David L. Miner, the Rev. Charles “Chuck” Ireson and the Rev. Robert W. Wiseman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be at the residence of Beverly Crotts, 1720 Ternberry Road, High Point.
Memorials may be directed to Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, 5055 Snyder Country Road, Trinity, N.C. 27370.

Ethylene Charnock
Jamestown - Mrs. Ethylene Ragsdale Charnock, 73, died Feb. 2, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born in Asheboro and was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church and retired from High Point College in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thornton Charnock.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina C. and Dave Schumaker of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Diane Martin of Deltona, Fla.; a stepson, William T. Charnock and his wife, Shirley, of Powhatan, Va.; three sisters, Daisy Vestal, Cleta Mae Kearns and Faedene Maness, all of Asheboro; two brothers, Delbert Ragsdale of Asheboro and Burnis Ragsdale of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be private Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
