Bonnie Cook
Kernersville - Mrs. Bonnie Queen Cook, 83, of 2354 N.C. 66 died Feb. 3, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Dec. 16, 1916, in Wilkes County, a daughter of Abbie M. and Martha Hayes Queen. She had been a resident of Kernersville for the last six years having previously lived 30 years in the Archdale-Trinity area. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Archdale and was a homemaker. She was married to James W. Cook, who preceded her in death in March 1994.
Surviving are two sons, Ray Cook of Trinity and Robert Cook of Indian Trail; two daughters, Martha Bryant of Kernersville and Betty Cook of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ester Daniels of Florida and Texie Barber of Trinity.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Mike Smith. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Denton - Emitt S. Edwards, 69, died Feb. 3, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
John Elder Jr.
Jamestown - John Thomas “Tom” Elder Jr., 56, a loving husband, father and grandfather, of 308 Nutwood Circle died Feb. 2, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
He was born March 21, 1943, in Atlanta, Ga., a son of John Thomas and Dorris Upchurch Elder. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and retired in 1996 from Duke Power Co. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport, Tenn. On Sept. 18, 1965, he married Andrea Chadwell, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Penny Woody and her husband, Tony, of Denver, N.C.; a son, John T. Elder III and his wife, Catherine, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; his mother, Mrs. Dorris Elder of Kingsport Tenn.; a brother, Shannon Elder of Kingsport, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Malinda Kate Woody.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sechrest Chapel, High Point. Visitation will be Saturday after the memorial service.

High Point - Ms. Mary Louise Harper, 40, of 403 Barker Avenue died Feb. 2, 2000, at her residence.

Margie Hill
Archdale - Mrs. Margie Martin Hill, 67, of 3356 Hilltop Drive died Feb. 2, 2000, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Swain County, a daughter of Harley and Ida Trammell Martin. She was a resident of the Archdale area most of her life. She was a former employee of Claredon Industries and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. In 1952, she married Jerry Ray Hill, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are three sons, David Hill and his wife, Joyce, of Archdale, Darrell Hill of High Point, and Donnie Hill and his wife, Vicki, of High Point; a daughter, Mrs. Darlene Lamm and her husband, Bob, of Trinity; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale by the Rev. Jack Tripp and the Rev. Buddy Fox. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Retired doctor, Jennings, dies at age of 78

Palm Beach - Dr. Royal Green Jennings Jr., 78, formerly of High Point, N.C., died Jan. 18, 2000.
He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Winston-Salem, N.C., a son of Dr. Royal Green and Nell Hester Jennings. He received his bachelor of science degree at Wake Forest University, was in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and editor of the 1942 yearbook. He received his medical degree at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1945. He served in research and residency in internal medicine at N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, and was a graduate student and residency in dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York. He also was an associate in practice in dermatology, Park Ave., New York, a member of the teaching faculty in dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, N.Y. City, and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem. He was the first board certified dermatologist in High Point in 1954 and established the High Point Dermatology Clinic with offices in High Point, Lexington, N.C., and Kernersville, N.C., retiring Nov. 30, 1991.
He was past president of the Guilford County Medical Society, past chairman of the N.C. Dermatology Association; past officer of the American Academy of Dermatology Society and the Cutaneous Therapy Society and founding member of the Space Dermatology Foundation (a division of NASA), a group formed to study the effects of weightlessness on the human body. He authored several scientific papers and was a lecturer in various countries including: Mexico, Ireland, Great Britain, France, Italy, Greece and Kenya. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948 as a captain and was general medical officer at Oliver General Hospital, Augusta, Ga. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, High Point. He was married to the former Treva Miller of Winston-Salem, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James Edward (Susan) Vance of West Palm Beach and Mrs. Jeanne Jennings Tucker of Boston, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Joshua, David and Stuart of Boston.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Sechrest Chapel, High Point, by Dr. R. Scott Woodmansee. Visitation will be after the service until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Galivants Ferry - Clyde Johnson, 83, died Feb. 2, 2000, in Conway Hospital following an illness.

David Kennedy
Archdale - David Leroy Kennedy, 39, of 4679 Huff Road died Feb. 3, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 17, 1960, in Guilford County, a son of Jimmy and Betty Johnson Kennedy. He was an employee of Stanley Bostic. He was married to Kathy Kennedy, who survives of Sophia.
Also surviving are his parents of the residence; a daughter, Collene Abigail Kennedy of Sophia; a stepson, Jeremy Harper of Sophia; a sister, Lisa Adams of Thomasville; and his grandmother, Paulette Johnson of Trinity.
Private graveside service will be Saturday. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Lexington - Carey Jay Layton, 66, of Avenue B died at 4:56 p.m. Feb. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a serious illness of four weeks.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today in Lexington City Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home.
Arletha Miller
High Point - Mrs. Arletha Brown Miller, 56, formerly of Beaucrest Avenue, died Jan. 31, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital, where she had been a patient four days. She had been in declining health for 13 months, during which time she was a resident at Bencor Rehabilitation, Greensboro and more recently, at SunBridge of the Triad, High Point.
She was born Sept. 7, 1943, in Bennettsville, S.C., a daughter of Ernest Brown and Mary Moses Brown Pearson, who preceded her in death. She graduated from East Side High School, Bennettsville. Shortly afterwards, she moved to High Point, where she was employed as a knitter at Silver Knit and Harriss Covington Hosiery Mills. She also was formerly employed at Sears Marketing Center. She was a member at Hi-Thom Church of Christ. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Miller Jr.; a sister, Virginia Brown; and three brothers, Ernest Brown Jr., Joseph Pearson, and David Pearson.
Surviving are a son, Steven C. (Lisa) Miller of Wilkesboro; a daughter, Mrs. Beverly L. (Cory) Bruch of Mannheim, Germany; three grandchildren, Michael and Corey, both of Wilkesboro, and Teyler Bruch of Mannheim, Germany; a brother, Luke Edward Pearson of Atlanta; four sisters, Mrs. Clara Mae Hawkins of Compton, Calif., Mrs. Dorothy Furlow of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Mary Ann (Linwood) Williams of Roosevelt, N.Y., and Mrs. Debra (Ronnie) Moore of Bennettsville.

C.Austin Smith
Lexington - C. Austin “Whitey” Smith, 76, died Feb. 2, 2000.
He was born in Pickens County, S.C., a son of Claude Franklin and Ina Revis Smith. He was an educator with Cleveland County Schools, Lexington City Schools and Davidson County Schools, ending his career at Hasty Elementary School in Thomasville in 1980.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Sink Smith of the residence; a son David Morris Smith of Monroe; three sisters, Velma Crowe, Genelle McCarver and Carolyn Tallant.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

George Taylor
High Point - George Gilmer Taylor, 100, of Graybrier Nursing Home died Feb. 3, 2000, at his residence.
He was born April 6, 1899, in Stokes County, a son of Harrison H. and Eleanor Sheppard Taylor. He came to High Point in 1927, where he worked with Snow Lumber Co. and Anvil Brand. He later worked with Floral Garden Park Cemetery and with Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. He was the last survivor of a family of 14 brothers and sisters. On April 4, 1931, he married Mary Younts, who preceded him in death July 30, 1985. He later married Jan. 17, 1987, Dorothy Fisher, who survives of Trinity.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Colista Nichols of Pleasant Garden; three grandchildren, Michael Nichols, Dawn Nichols and Brent Nichols.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by Elder Donald Johnson. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Lester Alexander
High Point - Lester Allen Alexander, 72, of 1308 Woodhaven Ave. died Feb. 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital. He had been in declining health for six weeks.
He was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Guilford County, a son of Ray and Lillian Mebane Alexander, who preceded him in death. He attended the public schools, graduating from Florence High School, class of ’47. After serving a tour of duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he returned to High Point, where he was employed as a mattress cutter with Englander Mattress Co. After retirement, he was employed at Thomas Built Buses and recently employed at Wackenhut Corp. He was an active member at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where he served as vice chairman of the trustee board, member of the finance committee, male chorus, Senior Choir #1, and co-chairman of Food for the Needy. He was a member of Knights of Pythian Fraternity. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Diggs and Maxine Ingram; and three brothers, Monroe Mebane, Richard Joyner and James Robert “Bobby” Alexander.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Patterson Alexander of the residence; a son, James Robert (Lisa) Alexander of Santa Ross, Calif.; six daughters, Ms. Janice Gates of Kernersville, Mrs. Cynthia (James Franklin) Green, Ms. Acquanetta Alexander, Ms. Lillian “Cookie” Alexander, Mrs. Terri (Shawn) Hairston and Mrs. Wanda Meekins, all of High Point; 17 grandchildren, J.J., Melanie, Brandon, Quintin, Alaina, Michelle, Aja, Noah, Nikki, Dominique, Nia, Kendra, Marcus, Mallory, Aliya, Ashley and Dwayne; five brothers, George (Margaret) Alexander of Kernersville, Arthur (Gloria) Alexander of High Point, Leslie (Tina) Joyner of Allentown, Pa., John (Shirley) Joyner of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ray Joyner of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Stacks of Jamaica, N.Y., Mrs. Connie (Ed) Miller of High Point, Ms. Patricia Joyner of Greensboro, and Mrs. Joyce Frazier of Phillipsburg, N.J.; two aunts, Beatrice McCullough and Helen Burns; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Alexander and Juanita Mebane, all of High Point; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
