Doris Minton
Abingdon, Va. - Doris Aven Minton, 87, died Feb. 21, 2000, at her residence.
Surviving are a daughter, June Minton Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, Britton Smith of Kernersville, N.C. and Bill Smith of High Point, N.C.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Ruby Ritchie
Thomasville - Mrs. Ruby Stinson Ritchie, 88, of Hobbs Avenue died Feb. 22, 2000, in True-Care of Archdale.
She was born Oct. 4, 1911, in Davidson County, a daughter of John Dalton and Della Leagons Stinson. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving are aunts and cousins.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Rev. David H. Best. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mrs. Lillie Mae Baity, Carmalt Street.
Joann Russell
Thomasville - Mrs. Joann Kidd Russell, 56, of 1180 Joe Moore Road died Feb. 21, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 16, 1943, in Guilford County, a daughter of Joseph and Helen Holder Kidd. She was a resident of the High Point and Thomasville area most of her life. She was employed as office manger of Marsh Kitchens Inc., until she retired in 1996 due to declining health. She was married to Kermit Payne Russell, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Terri Holt and her husband, Eddie, of Asheboro; a sister, Mrs. Nancy White of Winston-Salem; and a niece, Mrs. Janet Fowler of High Point.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Fred Rogers and the Rev. Mark Kent. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Virgie Walker
High Point - Mrs. Virgie Slayton Walker, 95, of 233 Montlieu Ave. died Feb. 21, 2000, at her residence after declining health for three and one-half years.
She was born Oct. 4, 1904, in Danville, Va., the only child of Artie L. Slayton and Annie Virginia Davis. On June 30, 1927, she married William Calvin Walker of Mocksville, who preceded her in death Sept. 9, 1983. Together they spent their lives in N.C.
She lost her father when she was only three and her mother when she was only 15. She cherished the meaning of family and dedicated herself to motherhood, first with her own two children, a son and a daughter, and later with three grandchildren, who became a second family for her. With loving care, she unselfishly provided handmade clothes and dolls, homecooked meals and later college expenses. Mamaw as dear to three adoring grandchildren.
An avid gardener, she planted bulbs for springtime and pursued weeds with relentless fingers when they violated the beauty of her flowers. Although she enjoyed all flowers - particularly azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons - her favorite flower was the sweet gardenia, sometimes ravished by the bitter winter in the Carolinas but soon replaced with still another gardenia.
Surviving are a son, William Calvin Walker Jr. of High Point; a daughter, Virginia Anne Walker of Vero Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kelly Walker Zittinger; Lisa Walker Hancock and her husband, Steve, William Calvin Walker III and his wife, Sandi; six great-grandchildren, Christina and Nicole Zittinger, Meghan and Madison Hancock and Evan and Avery Walker; two half sisters, Pattie Hunt Seay and Annie Owen Abbott.
Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Floral Garden Park Cemetery by Dr. Garland Young. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Sechrest Funeral Home.

Callie White
High Point - Mrs. Callie Nance White, 89, formerly of 722 S. Hamilton St., died Feb. 22, 2000, at GrayBrier Nursing Center, Archdale.
She was born April 27, 1910, in Randolph County, a daughter of T.A. and Ellen Nance. She was a resident of the High Point vicinity most of her life and a member of Cloverdale Church of the Living God. On March 29, 1930, she married Burrus White, who preceded her in death in 1986. She also was preceded in death by an infant son.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie Harris and her husband, Vance, of High Point; a son, Burrus Thomas White of High Point; five grandchildren, Jane Rachelle Wardell and James Larry Pugh II, both of High Point, Joseph White of Archdale, Jan Heather Baker of Thomasville and Misty Dawn Rager of Warrenville, Ill; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Home, High Point, by the Rev. David Perry. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Virginia Young
Lexington - Mrs. Virginia S. Young, 77, of Hillcrest Drive died Feb. 22, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a three week illness.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Sally Byrd
Asheboro - Sally Smith Byrd, 78, of 1306 Old Cox Road, Apt. 3, died Feb. 20, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.
She was a Davidson County native and retired from Kayser-Roth. She was a member of the 4-H Club of Randolph County for 20 years, and a member of the American War Mothers. She also was a member of Bethel Friends Meeting.
Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Wayne Byrd of Siler City, and Charles Byrd of Asheboro; a daughter, Nancy Pierce of Trinity; two brothers, John Smith of Asheboro and Fred “Junie” Smith of Coleridge; two sisters, Ruby Richardson of Asheboro and Dorothy Brown of Ramseur; and five grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Friends Meeting by the Rev. Terry Kersey and the Rev. Ray Lambe. Burial will be in Holly Spring Friends Meeting Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Loflin Funeral Home in Ramseur and other times at the residence of her son, Charles Byrd, 3000 Whippoorwill Drive, Siler City.

Van Delk
Archdale - Van Mitchell Delk, 83, of 323 Blair Drive, formerly of 675 Dogwood Circle, High Point, died Feb. 20, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Randolph County a son of John Franklin and Essie Skeen Delk, who preceded him in death. He was retired owner of J&D Commercial Refrigeration. He served in the U.S. Army in the occupation forces in Japan during World War II. He was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church and a member of the Thomasville Assembly of God. He was first married to Iris Lee Welborn, who preceded him in death. He later married Ann McClelland, who survives of the residence. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Astor Delk; three sisters, Ruth Williams, Blanche Fraley and Lala Piner.
Also surviving are two sons, Van M. Delk Jr. of Brazoria, Texas and Randy Lee Delk of Charlestown, S.C.; a stepson, D.W. Harv McClelland of East Peoria, Ill.; two stepgrandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew; a sister, Virginia Kohl of Wilmington; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lyde Delk of Jackson Creek.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Thomasville Assembly of God, Business I-85, by the Rev. Nathan Byerly and the Rev. Paul Byerly. Burial will be in Piney Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson Creek Randolph County. The body will be placed in the church at noon Wednesday. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Thomasville - Jetter Carl “J.C.” Edwards Jr., 76, of 313 Ward St. died Feb. 21, 2000, at Asheboro health and Rehab Center.

Asheboro - Vernon Elwood Farlow, 82, of 201 Cow Palace Road died Feb. 18, 2000, at Golden Age in Lexington.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at National Cemetery, Salisbury.

T. Folwell Jr.
Buies Creek - Thomas H. Folwell Jr., 61, died Feb. 20, 2000, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, after a brief illness.
He was born in High Point and was a graduate of Guilford College. He earned his master’s degree in economics at Duke University. In 1963, he began his teaching career at Campbell University. During his years at Campbell, his achievements and awards were many and include such things as being the present director of the Southeastern Trust School, a former board member of the North Carolina 4-H Foundation and gubernatorial appointed member of the North Carolina State Library Commission. He was former director of the Buies Creek Branch of Mid-South Bank, and presently served as trustee for Good Hope Hospital. He served as the chairman of the department of business and the director of the MBA Program. In 1983, he was named the dean of the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. In 1975, he received the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce Award. He earned the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1970. In 1977, he received the Outstanding Faculty Award and in 1981, was named the Teacher of the Year at Campbell University. In additon to these honors, the Pine Burr Annual for Campbell was dedicated to him twice, in 1974 and in 1993. He was a member of the Buies Creek First Baptist Church and was the church moderator. Other former positions held in the church included, deacon, chairman of the finance committee and chairman of the Capital Fund Raising Committee. He continued to remain active at work and his community until his death.
Surviving are his wife, Judy O. Folwell of the residence; a daughter, Carolyn Holubec, and her husband, Bryan, of Taylor, Texas; and a grandson, Michael Holubec.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. today at Buies Creek First Baptist Church by Dr. Michael Simmons, Dr. John Rogers, Dr. Norman Wiggins and Dr. Jerry Wallace. Visitation will be immediately after the service at the Rumley Center at Campbell University.

High Point - Mrs. Ollie Mae Chavis Griffin, 81, died Feb. 20, 2000, at Britthaven of Davidson, Thomasville.
She was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Scotland County, a daughter of Cleve and Bettie Caulder Chavis, who preceded her in death. She was formerly employed with Gordy’s Restaurant and a member of Northside Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul “P.W.” Griffin.
Surviving are a son, Noel H. Freeman Jr. and his wife, Vickie, of Welcome; a daughter, Betty R. Griffin of High Point; two sisters, Essie Bowyer of Laurel Hill and Evelyn Peele of Raeford; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
