Clara Diggs
High Point - Mrs. Clara Mae Leonard Diggs, 77, of 823 Willow Place, died May 10, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for the Triad, where she had been a patient for one day.
She was born in High Point, one of six children born to the union of Curtis Leonard and Delsie Gray Leonard, who preceded her in death . She graduated from William Penn High School and was a homemaker. She was an active member of Word of Life Ministries. She was a Sunday school teacher and youth night teacher. She also was preceded in death by her husband, George Diggs, May 20, 1975; two sons, Charles Leonard and James Diggs; and a grandson, Robert Wesley.
Surviving are four sons, Melvin Diggs, Larry Diggs and his wife, Elvenia, all of High Point, the Rev. Ronald Diggs and his wife, Joyce, of Jamestown and Attorney Lester Diggs and his wife, Gail, of Aiken, S.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Patricia L. Smith and her husband, Arthur, Mrs. Bertha Lilly and her husband, Tyrone, all of High Point and Mrs. Selena Barr of Greensboro; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Word of Life Ministries by the Rev. Ronald Diggs. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 p.m. Monday at the church and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, 2102 Alpine Drive.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Frazier
High Point - Mrs. Pauline Frazier Frazier, 80, of Wesleyan Arms, died March 9, 2000, at the nursing facility.
She was born Nov. 3, 1919, in Randolph County, a daughter of Henry Thomas and Lillie Patterson Frazier. She retired from Miller Desk Co. On June 8, 1937, she married Clifford H. Frazier, who preceded her in death Aug. 31, 1974. She was preceded in death by their only son, Jerry Lee Frazier in 1983; a brother, Ernest Frazier; a sister, Lois Frazier Lanier
Surviving are three sisters, Mozelle Parker, Ruby Thompson and Jewell Burgess, all of High Point; a brother, H.T. Frazier Jr. and his wife, Judy, of High Point; a brother-in-law, Clyde A. Lanier of High Point; two granddaughters, Cheryl Frazier of Trinity and Terri Barbee of Burlington; and a grandson, Shannon Frazier of High Point.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at J.A. Grout Memorial Chapel, First Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service at First Wesleyan Church.

Clarence Kemp
High Point - Clarence Edward “Ed” Kemp, 78, of 809 Oakview Road died March 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Aug. 24, 1921, in High Point, a son of William T. and Etta Dailey Kemp, who preceded him in death . On Dec. 4, 1949, he married the former Jessie Dean Russell. He was founder of a full-service advertising agency, Ed Kemp Associates Inc., which serves clients in several southeastern states. He attended High Point public schools, Duke University and High Point College, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree.
He was a U.S. Marines veteran having served four years in World War II, including service in the Pacific. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, attaining the rank of captain. Following World War II, he worked as a staff writer at the High Point Enterprise and later became manager of High Point Bureau for the Greensboro Daily News and Record. After serving in the Korean War, he became president and first editor of Southern Furniture News, a national trade publication.
In 1961, he founded Ed Kemp Associates Inc., which has grown to become one of the leading ad agencies in North Carolina. He is chairman of the board of Ed Kemp Associates, and secretary-treasurer of American Land Co. Inc. He was a former Jaycees director, former Rotarian, and former member of the Elks and Moose lodges.
He served three two-year terms in the N. C. House of Representatives and two terms in the N. C. State Senate. In the N. C. House, he was chairman of the committees on local government and chairman of the committee on congressional districts. During his second term in the N.C. Senate, he was chairman of the committee on congressional districts. For three legislative sessions he was vice-chairman of the powerful finance committee. He is a former member of the N. C. Board of Conservation and Development, where he served as vice-chairman of the state parks committee. He was one of the founders of Guilford Technical Community College, serving five years on the board of trustees. He is a former member of the governor’s committee on voting and is a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He is a member and chairman of the stewardship and finance committee at Deep River Friends Meeting.
He was preceded in death by his son, Alan Dean Kemp on Dec. 6, 1997; and five sisters, Mrs. Tillie Horne, Mrs. Bertha McLeod, Mrs. Mary Gordon, Mrs. Edith Shoaf and Mrs. Margaret Newman; and three brothers, Jack Dailey Kemp, Thurman Kemp and Ramey Floyd Kemp.
Surviving are his wife of the residence; a son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Denna Kemp of High Point; two grandchildren, Leah and Julie Kemp; and a sister, Mrs. Wilma Felt of Tempe, Ariz.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Deep River Friends Meeting House by John Sides. Burial will be in Deep River Friends Meeting House Cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, until placed in Deep River Meeting House 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and following the burial service Sunday at the fellowship hall of the Deep River Friends Meeting House.

Lessie Livengood
Lexington - Mrs. Lessie M. Livengood, 90, died at 3:10 p.m. March 9, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the residence.

Dallas Saunders
Salisbury - The Rev. Dallas Roy Saunders, 87, of 726 Hidden Creek Circle died March 9, 2000, at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health for several weeks.
He was born Aug. 21, 1912, in Montgomery County, a son of Jonah Webster and Fanny Lucina Reynolds Saunders, who preceded him in death . He was a graduate of Montgomery County school systems and God’s Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he majored in theology. He was a minister in the Wesleyan Church and ordained in 1936. He served pastorates in Albemarle, Gold Hill, Lexington, Burlington, Trinity Wesleyan in Salisbury, Forrest City, and Asheboro.
In addition to his pastoral duties he served the Wesleyan District on many committees and in various capacities. He further served Wesleyan World Missions, where he served as district superintendent in Barbados and served also in Guyana. He was a member of Gold Hill Wesleyan Church.
On Jan. 29, 1985, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Taylor Saunders. On Dec. 26, 1987, he married the former Pansy Ficklin, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are three sons, James Farrell Saunders of Gaffney, S.C., David Roy Saunders of E. Amherst, N.Y. and Dallas Stephen Saunders of Clemson, S.C.; a daughter, Sara Saunders Ramseur of Gastonia; a stepdaughter, Martha Ann Richardson of Salisbury; a brother, Jonah Franklin Saunders of Troy; a sister, Mrs. Lilly Mae S. Eury of Albemarle; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, the Rev. W. Lee Cockerill and the Rev. Leon Thompson, N.C. Eastern District Superintendent. Burial will be in Gold Hill Wesleyan Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Wesleyan Church.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Wesleyan Church, 2200 Mooresville Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28147.

Windblow - Elgia Theodore Terry, 75, died March 5, 2000, at his residence in Richmond County.

High Point - Mrs. Julia Paletta Walsh, 80, of High Point Manor, formerly of Clarksburg, W. Va. and Warren, Ohio, died March 10, 2000.

George Barbee
LEXINGTON - George Gilbert “Gil” Barbee, 88, of Carolina House, formerly of Radio Drive, died at 7:57 a.m. March 7, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Reformed United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Mittie Barnett
RANDLEMAN - Mrs. Mittie Stoots Barnett, 95, of GrayBrier Nursing Retirement Center formerly of 6180 Cedar Lane, died March 4, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Aug. 31, 1904, in Pulaski, Va., a daughter of James Lee and Nancy Quesenberry Stoots. She was married to William Barnett, who preceded her in death in 1988. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Lee Barnett and June Barnett; and three brothers, Harry Stoots, Frank Stoots and Oscar Stoots.
Surviving are a son, James Wayne Barnett of High Point; five daughters, Mrs. Nancy Wallace and Mrs. Juanita Ann Gates, both of High Point, Mrs. Mary Lou Tysinger of Randleman, Mrs. Rebecca Hooks and Mrs. Naomi Hoffman, both of Trinity; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Cundiss of Rocky Mount, Va., Mrs. Amanda Craig of Charlottesville, Va., and Ms. Lona Mae Stoots of Pulaski, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Tuesday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Raleigh Hayden. Burial was in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

Azalea Berrie
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Azalea Ward Berrier, 79, of 2081 Ball Road died March 6, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Iredell County. She was a retired employee with Freemont and Singer Hosiery Mills. She was a member of Pine Woods United Methodist Church, the Charles Hunt Victory Class and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Thomasville Order of the Eastern Star. She was married to Ervin M. “Dock” Berrier, who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Berrier.
Surviving are a son, Doug K. Berrier of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Jessie Yates of Thomasville; a brother, Ermine Ward of Thomasville; two grandchildren, Mark Berrier of Lexington and Donna Berrier of Thomasville; and two great-grandchildren, Katie Berrier and Audrey Berrier, both of Lexington.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. William Dingus. Burial will be in Pine Woods United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be directed to the Charles Hunt Victory Sunday School Class, Pine Woods United Methodist Church, c/o Jerry Stone, 1000 Salem St., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Hannah Burgess
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Hannah Clinard Burgess, 89, of Piedmont Retirement Center died March 7, 2000.
She was born July 7, 1910, in Thomasville. In 1933, she received a bachelor’s degree and an elementary teaching certificate from Chowan College. She taught for five years at Pilot School, where she was a former student. In 1938, she married Jesse L. Burgess of Conway. In 1948, they moved to Norfolk, Va., where she taught in the public schools system for 14 years. After residing in Norfolk for 34 years, she and her husband retired to Kill Devil Hills. In 1995, they moved into the Piedmont Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, after 58 years of marriage.
Surviving are her son, David N. Burgess of Thomasville; two daughters, Beverly B. McBride of Vienna, Va., and Jan Burgess Wilson of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jessica B. Teague of Waxhaw, Andrew L. McBride of Albuquerque, N.M. and Michelle M. Cross of Greenville; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Marie Teague of Waxhaw.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial United Methodist Church.

LEXINGTON - William “Bill” Henry Dameron, 67, of Hilltop Drive died at 5:53 a.m. March 7, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the residence.
