Mary Fowler
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Edith Johnson Fowler, 88, of 5327 Rampy St. died March 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born on May 5, 1911, a daughter of Edward Leroy and Flora Augusta Feree Johnson, who preceded her in death. In 1928, she married Edward F. Fowler, who preceded her in death in 1993. She was a homemaker and an active member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class, member of the Adult Choir, member of the Women’s Missionary Union, member of the Sunshine Club and was secretary of the youth department and a teacher of the 2- and 3-year-olds Sunday school class.
Surviving are a daughter, Pauline Stevinson and her husband, Gordon, of Trinity; a son, Ricky Fowler of McLeansville; two grandchildren, Autumn and Brandon Fowler, both of McLeansville; and special friends, Frances Cumby, Nancy Boyles and Mable Wylder.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Kenneth R. Evans and the Rev. J.C. Alley. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Verlie James
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Verlie Mae James, 68, of 1720 Hannaford Road, died March 6, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital, where she had been a patient 11 days. She had been in declining health for three years.
She was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Gaffney, S.C., a daughter of James Monroe and Annie Beauford Littlejohn Curtis. She attended public schools in Shelby and Johnson City, Tenn. She later relocated to High Point, where she was employed for more than 20 years as a furniture finisher at Alma Desk Co., a position from which she retired in 1982. She resided in Washington, D.C., for 15 years, returning in November 1999 to Greensboro to make her residence. She was preceded in death by her mother April 26, 1992, and a grandchild, Tonita Gregory.
Surviving are two sons, Anthony L. Curtis of Washington and Theodore Shipes of Silver Springs, Md.; three daughters, Dianne Gregory and her husband, Lacy, of Greensboro, Debra Shipe Thomas and her husband, the Rev. Tony K., of Durham and Amber Denise Middlebrooks and her husband, Fredrick, of High Point; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Burtis and his wife, Margaret, and Fields Curtis, all of Los Angeles; three sisters, Ms. Leola Roberts of New York, Ms. Yvonne Curtis of Greensboro, and Mrs. Priscilla Curtis-Mitchell of Olney, Md.; an aunt, Mrs. Rosa Lee Marable of High Point; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends, all who held a dear place in her heart.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Power House of Deliverance Church by Bishop W.L. Washington. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel, High Point, and other times at the residence.
Rose Lenobel
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Rose Lenobel, 88, of 2215 Hickswood Road, High Point, died March 7, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital.
She was a native of Chicago, Ill. and a homemaker.
Surviving are her daughter, Barbara “Bobbi” Ball and her husband, Thomas, of High Point; and three step-grandsons, Damon Ball, Aaron Ball and Landon Ball.
Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Beth David Memorial Gardens, Hollywood, Fla.

Ruth Royals
ARCHDALE - Mrs. Ruth M. Royals, 75, formerly of 10205 S. Main St., died March 6, 2000, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 29, 1924, in Chattanooga, Tenn., a daughter of Andy Andrew and Nancy Perry McConkey. She was of the Methodist faith. She was married to Gerald S. Royals, who preceded her in death September 1984. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Pearl Rich.
Surviving are three sons, Gerald S. “Jerry” Royals and his wife, Alice, of Trinity, James L. “Jim” Royals of Archdale and Donald A. Royals of Orlando, Fla.; three grandsons, James Lee Royals Jr., Todd Royals and Scott Royals; a granddaughter, Dana R. Reaves; and a great-granddaughter, Sara Nichole Royals.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel, Archdale, by the Rev. Amy Coles and the Rev. Chris Bennett. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

RANDLEMAN - Major Dupree Sibbett, 73, died March 7, 2000, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

James Stratton
HIGH POINT - James Ervin Stratton, 88, of 1011 N. Rotary Drive died at 1:13 a.m. March 6, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a short illness.
He was born May 29, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, Va. On Sept. 27, 1930, he married Flora Clodfelter, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are three sisters, Ms. Vesta Stratton of West Point Avenue, High Point, Ms. Anna Stratton of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. Elizabeth Bulla of West Union, S.C.; two brothers, Sam Stratton and John Stratton, both of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth Memorial Wesleyan Church by the Rev. David M. Emery and the Rev. David M. Albertson. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Ann Thayer
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Ann Canter Thayer, 73, of 1758 Fuller Mill Road died March 6, 2000, at her residence.
She was born July 7, 1926, in Calhoun County, Ala., a daughter of John William and Sara Rebecca Wilson Canter. She was a homemaker and a member of the Thomasville Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and was a former Sunday school teacher of the ladies class in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1945, she married Charles Lawrence Thayer, who preceded her in death March 22, 1980.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Max (Cathy) Welborn of Thomasville; two sons, Greg Thayer of Trinity and Charles Timothy Thayer of Thomasville; four sisters, Mrs. Jackie Jordan of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Gail Jordan of Center, Ala., Mrs. Louise Scott and Mrs. Peggy Johnson, both of Huntsville, Ala.; four brothers, Thomas Canter, Dick Canter, Robin Canter and Paul Canter, all of Piedmont, Ala.; two grandchildren, Rebecca Michelle Curd and Cheryl Small; and two great-grandchildren, Allison Curd and Brooke Curd.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Methodist Church by the Rev. James P. Banks, the Rev. Charles Walker and the Rev. Donald Puckett. Burial will be in Fair Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Jimmy Bowman
TRINITY - Jimmy Wayne Bowman, 51, of 4353 Forest Manor Drive died March 7, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital following one year of declining health.
He was born Dec. 1, 1948, in Forsyth County, a son of Guilford Winfield and Lucy Brannock Bowman. He was a lifelong resident of the Trinity area. He was a 1967 graduate of Allen Jay High School and attended High Point University on a basketball scholarship. He was a U.S. National Guard veteran and an expert marksman. He was a member of Allen Jay Baptist Church and past member of the High Point Jaycees. He was owner of Jim Bowman Electrical Co. On Dec. 26, 1969, he married the former Abby Soluatri, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are two sons, Brian Bowman and his wife, Debbie, of 4361 Forest Manor Drive, Trinity and Michael Bowman and his wife, Ginger, of 2777 Rob Cruthis Road, Archdale; a brother, Larry G. Bowman and his wife, Margie, of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Dale (Peggy) Liner of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren, Griffin Winfield Bowman and Leah Blair Bowman.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Allen Jay Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger W. Carmichael. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Hannah Burgess
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Hannah Clinard Burgess, 89, of Piedmont Retirement Center died March 7, 2000.
She was born July 7, 1910, in Thomasville. In 1933, she received a bachelor’s degree and an elementary teaching certificate from Chowan College. She taught for five years at Pilot School, where she was a former student. In 1938, she married Jesse L. Burgess of Conway. In 1948, they moved to Norfolk, Va., where she taught in the public schools system for 14 years. After residing in Norfolk for 34 years, she and her husband retired to Kill Devil Hills. In 1995, they moved into the Piedmont Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, after 58 years of marriage.
Surviving are her son, David N. Burgess of Thomasville; two daughters, Beverly B. McBride of Vienna, Va., and Jan Burgess Wilson of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; a brother, Brown Clinard; three sisters, Margaret Murphy, Meredith Myers and Dorcus C. Laws; three grandchildren, Jessica B. Teague of Waxhaw, Andrew L. McBride of Albuquerque, N.M. and Michelle M. Cross of Greenville; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Marie Teague of Waxhaw.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial United Methodist Church.

WINSTON-SALEM - Sherry Luann Garner, 46, of Trafalgar Square died at 6:50 p.m. March 7, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center after a serious illness of one week.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be at the residence of her parents, 1121 N. County Home Road, Lexington.
Claude Peace
THOMASVILLE - Claude Ritzle Peace, 65, of 1557 Burton Road died March 7, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1934, in Davidson County, a son of Mack and Grace Hodgin Peace. He retired from Thayer Coggin Inc. and was a member of Oak Hill Friends Meeting, High Point. On Dec. 23, 1955, he married the former Eleanor Wilson, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Kathy Sloan and her husband, Phil, of Thomasville; three grandchildren, Jason Sloan, Jonathan Sloan and Cheryl Sloan; a sister, Mrs. Donnie Smith of Wallburg; and a brother, Kenneth Peace of Thomasville.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Hill Friends Meeting by the Rev. Joseph Neal and the Rev. Terry Kersey. Inurnment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Lyda Spencer
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Lyda McIntosh Spencer, 98, formerly of High Point, died March 7, 2000, at Beverly Health Care.
She was born April 28, 1901, in Clay County, a daughter of Harleston Rutledge and Mary Ann Ledford McIntosh. She retired in 1952 as a registered nurse, having been associated with the Guilford General Hospital, now High Point Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death Jan. 25, 1969, by her husband, Elias Morrison Spencer.
Surviving is a nephew, Donald McIntosh Jacobs of Goldsboro.
Burial was today in Deep River Friends Meeting House Cemetery.
Sechrest Funeral Service, High Point, was in charge of arrangements.
