High Point - Mrs. Lois Pope Beeson, 70, of 812 Newell St. died March 14, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Orie Broyles
Jamestown - Orie Van Broyles, 53, of Hilltop Road died March 12, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed wood working as his hobby.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy M. Broyles, of the residence; four children, Orie Charles Broyles and Aaron Oscar Broyles, both of Fairfield, Iowa, Saword Ann Broyles Eller of Sophia and April May Broyles of the residence; two stepchildren, Shelly Lane Currie and Devon Christine Currie, both of the residence; his parents, Orie and Daisy Broyles of Cedar Bluff, Va.; three brothers, David Glenn Broyles and Wayne Broyles, both of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Danny Ross Broyles, of Maryfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Miranda Eller, Stephanie Eller and Ares Eller.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.
Harold Clapp
High Point - Harold Ward Clapp, 70, of Wesleyan Retirement Center died at 9:35 p.m. March 13, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital after a short illness.
He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Guilford County, a son of Rollin Lee and Lillie Ward Clapp Sr. He was a resident of High Point since 1977. He attended First Wesleyan Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. George (Henrietta) Strickland and Mrs. Garland (Nancy) Coble, both of Greensboro; and a brother, Rollin Lee Clapp, Jr. of Gibsonville.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Greensboro. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the service.

Danny Dial
High Point - Danny Dial, 42, of 203 Hall St. died March 13, 2000, at his residence.
He was born July 25, 1957, in Robeson County, a son of Roscoe and Henrietta Oxendine Dial. He had been a resident of High Point since 1992. He was a graduate of East Carolina University, where he received a bachelor of music degree. He later taught music at East Carolina University and had been a member of the Greenville Choral Society, the American Choral Director’s Association and the Music Educator’s National Conference. He was a member of Faith and Victory Ministries.
Surviving are seven sisters, Macie Lewis and Brenda Hunt, both of Archdale, Kathan Locklear of Maxton, Letha Strickland of Charlotte, Barbara Hunt and Melissa Dial, both of Lumberton, and Rosemary Locklear of Trinity; and four brothers, Lee E. Dial of Norfolk, Va., Randolph Dial of Pembroke, Terry L. Dial of Raeford and Roscoe Dial Jr. of Lumberton.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Faith and Victory Ministries, 6818 Coltrane Mill Road, Greensboro, by Carl Harper. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, and other times at the residence of Keith and Brenda Hunt, 3647 Donna View Drive, Archdale.
A second service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Mortuary Chapel, Lumberton. Burial will be in New Point Baptist Church Cemetery, Lumberton. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Floyd Mortuary.

Leopold Hays
Greensboro - Dr. Leopold Mozart Hays, 93, of Friends Home West died March 12, 2000, at the home.
He was born April 2, 1906, in Marshfield, Mass., a son of Samson Walton and Edith Ames Hays. He attended Holmes College of the Bible, Campbell Jr. College and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Duke University. He received his doctorate at Bost University. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy, USAR officer 1st Lt-Lt. Col. TransCorp.AUS.
He was one of the founders and members of the Army Transportation Museum Foundation, Fort Eustis, Va. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol from 1952 to present and was a single engine aircraft pilot for 42 years. He was a member of the Baltimore Methodist Church Conference from 1938 to 1941. He was a minister and a member of the New England United Methodist Church Conference.
He was a professor at High Point College from January 1955 until May 1972. He retired as head of the sociology department. In 1960, he published a book entitled, “For Every Citizen To Read.”
For ten years, he taught the young adult at First United Methodist Church in High Point. On March 5, 1961, the members voted to change the name of the class to Hays’ Bible Class to show their love and respect for him. On Dec. 22, 1963, he married Dorothy Eubanks, professor of Christian education and religion at High Point College, who preceded him in death in June 1997.
Surviving are a daughter, the Rev. Leanne Hays Campbell of Tioga Center, N.Y.; and a son, Philip Hays Croome of Foster, R.I.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Chapel by Dr. Garland Young. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.

Clemmons - Joe Lorenzo Hege Jr., 86, died March 14, 2000.

Charles Lohr
Sunset Beach - Charles Reid Lohr, 76, of 816 Holly Lane died March 13, 2000, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
He was born April 10, 1923, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of Charlie and Ollie Reid Lohr. He was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran, having served in World War II. He retired from Billings Transfer Co. in Lexington. He was a former resident of High Point, and lived in Sunset Beach for the past six years. On Aug. 16, 1960, he married Hazel Lohr, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Tut Lohr, Lindy Lohr and Paul Lohr; and a sister, Charlotte Lohr.
Also surviving are a son, Charlie McLean Lohr and his wife, Brenda, of Sophia; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Barbara) Thomas of Hickory, and Mrs. Johnny (Kaye) Harris of High Rock; four stepchildren, Mrs. Richard (Sharon) Ward of Charlotte, Craig Scoggins and his wife, Robin, of Sophia, Mrs. Bobby (Susan) Blalock of Morganton, and Eric Scoggins of Jamestown; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne Eric Lohr and his wife, Pat, of 3510 Garrell St., Archdale.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Brady Huneycutt. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of his brother, Wayne Lohr.
Donald McDaniel
Thomasville - Donald Leon McDaniel Sr., 57, of 5259 E. Holly Grove Road died March 12, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 24, 1942, in Davidson County, a son of Walter McDaniel Sr. and Gladys Reece McDaniel. He was last employed with Harris Teeter as a truck driver as long as his health permitted. He was a member of Christian Life Freewill Baptist Church. On March 10, 1971, he married Scarlett Peters, who survives of the residence. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Jerry Wayne McDaniel.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Crystal Dawn Colflesh and her husband, Dave, of Delaware, Mrs. Mary Lou Teal and her husband, Victor, of Asheboro and Mrs. Eva Alice Potts and her husband, Edward, of Trinity; three sons, Donald Leon McDaniel Jr. of Asheboro, James McDaniel and his wife, Sherice, of Germany and James David Butler and his wife, Michelle, of Lexington; his mother of Thomasville; three brothers, Bobby McDaniel, Walter McDaniel Jr. and Frank McDaniel, all of Thomasville; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Christian Life Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Gary Brown. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. tonight at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

John Pharis Sr.
Thomasville - John Carroll Pharis Sr., 56, of 709 Field St. died March 13, 2000, at his residence.
He was born June 30, 1943, in Key West, Fla., a son of John Thomas and Ruth Lucille Surratt Pharis. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He was employed with Thomas Built Buses Inc., retiring after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Davidson County Sheriff Department’s Posse, a former member of Pilot Lions Club and was active in the Disabled American Veterans. He was a charter member of Hillside Park Baptist Church and the Young Adult Sunday School Class. On April 26, 1968, he married Jewel Ward Jones, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Tammy) McKinney Jr. of Denton; a son, John C. Pharis Jr. and his wife, Kerry, of Archdale; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Butch (Carolyn) Adams of Thomasville and Mrs. Terry (Shirley) Setliff of Lexington; a stepson, Larry Jones and his wife, Wanda, of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Steve (Darlene) Matekovich of Destin, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Amber and Shawn McKinney, Carla Gregory, Lisa Coble, Cindy Smith, Misty Bivens, Terri Lynn Baxley and T.J. Setliff; and two great-grandchildren, Rebekah Smith and Sarah Baxley.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Hillside Park Baptist Church by the Rev. John Wheeles and the Rev. Doug Adams. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons until the service hour. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at 211 Warner St.

Bertie Routh
High Point - Mrs. Bertie Hill Routh, 81, of 6917 Harlow Road, died at 10:28 p.m. March 13, 2000, at her residence after several months of declining health.
She was born July 14, 1918, in Randolph County, a daughter of Edgar and Bertha Briles Hill. She was a homemaker and a day care keeper. She was a lifelong resident of High Point. She was a charter member of Friendship United Methodist Church. On Sept. 4, 1937, she married Kernie Routh, who preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1983. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. A.B. (Christine) Jordan.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Don (Faith) Scism of High Point, Mrs. Ann Harrell of Charlotte, Mrs. Shirley Holder of High Point, and Mrs. Sue Stroud of Archdale; three sons, Carl Edward Routh of High Point, Curtis W. Routh and his wife, Jean, of Trinity, and Roger Gene Routh and his wife, Pat, of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Alvin (Ava) Chandler of Trinity.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Arnold R. Johnson and the Rev. John L. Stewart. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Archie Slate
Trinity - Archie Lee Slate, 92, formerly of 801 W. Burton St., died March 14, 2000, at Graybrier Nursing Center.
He was born Dec. 2, 1907, in Stokes County, a son of Walter Lee and Sally Hampton Slate, who preceded him in death . He was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member of Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church for more than 50 years. He was an inspector for Alma Desk Co. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years in 1994.
Surviving are a son, Bill W. Slate and his wife, Becky, of Archdale; two daughters, Audrey Leath and her husband, Albert, of Matthews and Carol Cockerham and her husband, Mitchell, of Winston-Salem; a sister, Freezie Turner of Archdale; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Slate, Steven Slate, Michael Slate, David Leath, Timothy Leath, Kristen Leath Godwin, Melanie Hayworth Wyant and Andrew Hayworth; and seven great-grandchildren.
