George W. Brewington, Jr.
BROOKLYN, NY - George W. Brewington, Jr., 51, a native of Hertford County, died April 18, 2002 in Brooklyn, NY.
Survivors include his wife, Elenor Brewington of Brooklyn, NY; one son, Adam Brewington of Brooklyn, NY; parents, George and Purdle Brewington of Ahoskie; two sisters, Lydia Cardin of Virginia Beach, Va. and Ronnie Brewington of Ahoskie and a host of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was conducted at 12 noon, Monday, April 22, 2002 at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, any contributions are to be made payable to son, Adam Brewington’s, education fund.
James Wilson Hutcherson
GREENSBORO - Surrounded by his family, James Wilson ("Hutch") Hutcherson died peacefully in Greensboro on April 20, 2002 after a lengthy illness.
He was 76.
A celebration of his life, followed by a visitation with family and friends, will take place on April 23 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Greensboro, 100 West Friendly Avenue.
He was the Mayor of Ahoskie, N.C. from 1991-1994 and ran for Guilford County Commissioner in 1996.
A native of Lynchburg, Virginia and the son of Jesse Martin and Evelyn Edmonds Hutcherson, Hutch was born August 9, 1925.
He grew up in Halifax County, Virginia, was graduated from Halifax High School and attended the College of William and Mary, before being drafted into the army in 1944.
During his tour of duty, he served in the European theatre of operations; in 1950 he also served in the Korean conflict.
In 1951, he began a thirty-nine-year career with Virginia Electric and Power Co. in South Boston, Virginia.
During this time he studied electrical engineering with International Correspondence Schools in Scranton, Pennsylvania and was awarded a degree in the field.
In 1966, the company named him Manager of Ahoskie, North Carolina district, known today as NC Power, a division of Dominion Resources; he retired from that position.
In Ahoskie, Hutch was a member of the Town Council and was later elected Mayor of the town, serving two terms.
He was past president of the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow.
In addition, Hutch was a member and past chairmen of the State Legislative Committee for the AARP and active as a Boy Scout volunteer and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.
He was also a member of the Jamestown (VA) Society.
Hutch was an avid reader, a golf enthusiast and the best banana pancake maker in the world, according to his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
At the time of his death, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro and was active in his Sunday School class.
He was also serving as an ombudsman with the Guilford County Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Esther Lovelace Hutcherson; a daughter, Valerie Hutcherson Sutton and husband Benjamin C. Sutton of Greensboro; a son, James Lucien Hutcherson of Raleigh; four brothers, Jesse Martin Hutcherson, Jr. of Danville, Va., Albion Kenneth Hutcherson of Lutherville, Md., Cecil Thomas Hutcherson of Ocracoke, NC, and Robert Douglas Hutcherson of Laurens, SC; and three grandchildren, Lindsay McNee Sutton of Greensboro, Chelsea Elizabeth Reid Hutcherson and James Hunter Thornton Hutcherson of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Counts Hutcherson, Sr.
The family will receive friends prior to the memorial service at the home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro 27405, or to a charity of choice.
Nora Joyner
JACKSON - Ms. Nora Joyner, 77, died Tuesday, March 16, 2002 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by H.D. Pope Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.
Soloman Cherry
AULANDER - Mr. Soloman Cherry, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Freeman Cherry of Aulander; three sons, Soloman Cherry, Jr. of Hampton, Va., Joseph Cherry of Newport News, Va. and John Lewter of Ahoskie; one daughter, Peggy Ann Leary of Patterson, N.J.; two brothers, Foy Cherry of Ossining, N.J. and Sherman Cherry of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Thelma Eason of Ahoskie, Annie Sessoms of Colerain and Shirley Johnson of Ossining, N.J.; fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2002 at Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander by the Rev. C. C. Lawrence.
Burial will follow in the Cherry Family Cemetery.

ROXOBEL - Ms. Thelma Lee, died Monday, April 15 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Ms. Lee was born in Bertie County and was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Roxobel.
Survivors include three sons, Al Craig Lee, Sr. of Hampton, Va., Milton E. Lee of Newark, N.J. and Meredith Wallace Lee, Jr. of Patterson, N.J.; three daughters, Doris J. Knight and Ophellia Lee, both of Roxobel and Patricia A. Camm of Hampton, Va.; four brothers, Robert Nichols and Ernest Nichols, both of Patterson, N.J. Clarence Nichols of Newark, N.J. and Windell Nichols of Charlotte; five sisters, Mary Richardson of Roxobel, Florance Cherry of Portsmouth, Va., Virginia Gray of Passaic, N.J., Audrey Daye of Patterson, N.J. and Sulfornia Mack of Lodi, N.J.; twenty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Roxobel by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

POWELLSVILLE - Mr. John Abner Canada, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation Center in Windsor.
Canada was a member of First Baptist Church Powellsville.
Survivors include one brother, Milton D. Canada of Powellsville and one sister, Claristine Canada of Powellsville.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2002 at First Baptist Church Powellsville, Powellsville by the Rev. John White.
Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Ahoskie.

Goldie Mitchell Earley
AHOSKIE - Mrs. Goldie Mitchell Earley, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Earley and Ira Mitchell, both of Ahoskie; three daughters, Audrey E. Brown, Barbara Earley and Linda Rankins, all of Ahoskie; ten grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Elm Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. James R. Wiggins.
Burial will follow in the Earley Family Cemetery.

BALTIMORE, MD - Ms. Dorothy Miller, a native of Bertie County, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 in Baltimore, MD.
Survivors include two sons, Earldine Miller and Clinton Miller, both of Colerain; one daughter, Tammy Miller of Colerain, parents, Essie and Daniel Perry of Colerain; two brothers, Luther Perry of Stone Mountain, Ga. and Wilford Perry of Colerain; six sisters, Loretta Perry, Velma Perry, Julia Perry, Carol Perry and Annette Beale, all of Colerain and Cynthia Perry of Newport News, Va. and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21, 2002 at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel J. Thompson.

Levell Saulsberry
AHOSKIE - Levell Saulsberry, 62, died April 13, 2002 at the residence.
Saulsberry was a member of Springhill Baptist Church and worked at Bennett Box Factory.
Survivors include three sons, Levelle Saulsberry, Jr. of Lima Ohio, Dennis Earl Granberry and Alvester Liverman both of Powellsville; one daughter, Patrina Mosby of Hudson, NY; one step-daughter, Sarah Saunders of Merry Hill; three brothers, Solmon Smallwood of Norfolk, Va, Samuel Saulsberry and Nollege Saulsberry both of Ahoskie; three sisters, Agnes Wiggins of Powellsville, Maggie Little and Estelle Watford both of Ahoskie; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Luella Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Lassiter officiating.
Burial will follow in the Ballance Family Cemetery.

Raymond L. Britt, Sr.
NORFOLK, Va. - Raymond L. "Ray" Britt, Sr., 84, died April 16, 2002.
Britt, a native of Northampton County, was a retired supervisor at the Naval Air Rework Facility in Norfolk.
Survivors include his son, Raymond L. Britt, Jr.; four brothers, Jack Britt, Carl Britt and Charles Britt, all of Milwaukee and James Britt of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Elizabeth Blowe of Ahoskie and Claude Marie Dixon of Murfreesboro and two grandchildren.
A funeral with Masonic rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Rev. John Shappell.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Milwaukee Cemetery, Milwaukee.
The family received friends Wednesday, April 17, 2002 from 6 until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Transport Corp. for Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, Va., 23320 or to Norview United Methodist Church.
