Mrs. Sylvia Finch Harris
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Sylvia Finch Harris, age 73, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Friday, May 6, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Harris was a charter member of New Testament Christian Church and retired from Bibb. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth R. Harris.
Survivors include her daughter Trudy Baird and her husband Ron of Roanoke Rapids. Her granddaughter Kelly Baird and her fiance Clayton Moore. Her sister, Mary "Boots" Hale and her brother D.L. Finch and his wife Jackie. Also several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Minister Dale Morris officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids Saturday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM prior to services.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Testament Christian Church.
Elizabeth Gray Hill
Garysburg, NC - Elizabeth Gray Hill, age 88, died May 3, 2011 at her home.
Mrs. Hill was born July 14, 1922. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Hill, a granddaughter Robin Hill Carpenter and a son-in-law Ed Zusin.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Frank Hill, her sons, Freddie Hill and his wife Viola of Garysburg, NC and Steve Hill of Paragould, Arkansas. Her daughters, Betty Lou Zusin of Charlotte, NC, and Mary Jo Edwards and her husband Mark of Fayetteville, NC. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her loyal and faithful friends, who provided care for her during her illness, Ernestine Boone, Cora Boone, and Rocky Rawls.
A Celebration of her life will be held Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 2484 Jackson Bypass, Jackson, NC with Rev. Robert Hill officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Community Home Health and Hospice, especially Cindy Harsh who provided compassionate care.

Moses Todd, Jr.
Aulander, NC - Moses Todd, Jr., age 80, of Aulander, NC, died April 29, 2011 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
Moses was born Jan. 18, 1931 in Bertie County North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents Moses Todd, Eleanor Todd and a daughter Joyce Anita Todd.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty Ray Todd, of Aulander, NC, His son Tony Todd and wife Cecelia of Aulander, NC.
A memorial service to celebrate Moses life will be held, Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Aulander Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at Tony Todd’s house 401 Broad St. Aulander, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kinston Caswell Center at 2415 W. Vernon Ave. Kinston, NC 28504.

Mr. Ronald Boone
Jackson, NC - Mr. Ronald Boone, age 81, of Jackson, NC, died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Boone was born August 14, 1929 in Jackson NC the son of the late Joseph Harvey Boone and Lessie Lee Wright Boone.
He was also preceded in death by his wife Jeri Gay Boone. He was owner of Boone's Amoco in Jackson for many years, a member of Jackson Baptist Church, a retired member of the Jackson Fire Department and was a US Army Veteran.
Survivors include his daughter Evelyn Elliott and her husband Gary of Jackson, NC. Two grandchildren, Ryan Elliott and his wife Roseanna and Myrna Elliott. Three great-grandsons, Aden Hunter Elliott, Ryan Thomas Elliott, II and Nathan Lee King. Two sisters, Margaret Boone Ashley of Summerville, SC, and Louise Boone Grissom of Henderson, NC.
A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Boone’s life will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC, with Rev. Billy Howell, Rev. Robert "Bob" Johnson and Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the service at Jackson Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Baptist Church or to the Jackson Fire Department.

Tessa Renita Nowell
Woodland, NC - Tessa Renita Nowell, age 39, of Woodland, NC, died April 18, 2011 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
Tessa was born October 22, 1971 in Mobile, AL. She worked for Purdue Farms as an assembly line food wrapper for a few years before becoming disable.
Survivors include her mother Laquetta Phillips and husband Robert of Woodland, NC. Her son, Dennis Lee Nowell of Woodland, NC, Her cousins, Tina, Samantha, Kourtnie, Phillip and Colby. She is also survived by many more family members and special friends.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Tessa will be held Friday, April 22, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Bobby Turner officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday, April 22, 2011 one hour prior to the service.

Jacob Ernest Cooke II
Jacob Ernest Cooke II, John Henry MacCraken Professor Emeritus of History at Lafayette College, died March 6, 2011 in Hanover, NH, at the age of 86, after a college-teaching career spanning almost 40 years.
Born in Aulander, NC, Cooke was the son Jacob Ernest and Myrtle Bazemore Cooke. He attended UNC Chapel Hill. His undergraduate education was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II during which he served in the USAF from 1941-1945. He was stationed in the U.S., India, & Burma as a clerk. At war’s end, he resumed his education at UNC, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with an A.B. degree in 1947.
One of the nation’s foremost historians, Cooke has written and edited many books and articles on U.S. history. He earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1955, and his dissertation was published as "Frederick Bancroft: Historian" in 1956. He joined the faculty at Columbia and was one of the editors of the first 15 volumes of the "Papers of Alexander Hamilton". Also, while at Columbia, he edited the definitive edition of "The Federalist" which has been repeatedly reprinted over the past three decades.
After a brief appointment as Professor and head of the history department at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Melon University), Cooke joined the Lafayette College faculty in 1962 as the John Henry MacCraken Professor of History.
He served as head of Lafayette’s department of history from 1983-1986. He received the Thomas Roy and Lura Forest Jones Award for Superior Teaching and Scholarly Contributions in 1965 and 1976. In 1988, he became the inaugural recipient of Lafayette’s Mary Louise Van Artsdalen Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement.
While at Lafayette, he edited "The Reports of Alexander Hamilton" (1964) and wrote "The Age of Responsibility" (1965) and "The Kennedy Years" (1966) both in J.T. Adams, March of Democracy. He edited "Alexander Hamilton: a Profile in 1967" (a History Book Club selection) and co-edited "A History of the American Colonies" (13 vols. 1973-1976). He authored "Tench Coxe and the Early American Republic" (1978) and "Alexander Hamilton: a Biography" which was nominated for a National Book Award in 1982 and was also a selection of the History Book Club.
He received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Andrew W. Melon Foundation and has been a Fellow at the National Humanities Center, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Study and Conference Center in Belagio, Italy, and the Huntington Library in San Marino, Calif.
Upon retiring from Lafayette in 1990 after 27 years, Cooke went on to co-edit the "Encyclopedia of the North American Colonies" (1993) and "North America in Colonial Times" (1998).
Among other professional organizations, he was a member of the Society of American Historians, limited to historians who have made distinguished contributions to the writing of American History.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean Auguste Gordon Cooke, son, Jacob E. Cooke III, daughter-in-law, Dr. Elizabeth Peterson Cooke, two grandchildren, James August Cooke and Johannah Grace Cooke, all of Lyme, NH. He is also survived by two sisters, Ruth M. Cooke (Louisburg, NC) and Florence Eddy (Trenton, NC), and a first cousin, Mary T. Cooke Wiliford (Aulander, NC).
A graveside service will be held by Rev Marjorie Holm (All Saints' Episcopal Church) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 11 AM at the Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

Mrs. Barbara Brinkley Dixon
Grifton, NC - Mrs. Barbara Brinkley Dixon, age 78, of Grifton, NC, died Sunday, April 10, 2011.
Mrs. Dixon was born March 7, 1933, the daughter of the late Lewis Vann Brinkley and Mabel Ward Brinkley. She was predeceased by her husband Monty Dixon. She was a retired nurse.
Survivors include her daughter Patricia Ann Dixon of Greensboro, NC. Her son Robert Dixon and his wife Julia of Grifton, NC. Her granddaughters, Gabrielle Kaasa and her husband Bill Martin of Durham, NC and Carla Gray and her husband Mark of Grifton, NC. Two great-grandchildren, Noah Kaasa and Trevor Gray. Her sisters, Shirley Earley of Ahoskie, NC, Joan Faulkner of Portsmouth, VA, Jean Eure and Sandra Brinkley, both of Suffolk, VA and Betty Jo Spessard of Floyd, VA. One brother, Thomas Brinkley of Suffolk, VA.
Graveside services will be held, Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Aulander Cemetery with E. Lee Penwell officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Wednesday from 12:30 until 1:45 prior to the services.
Mr. Harold L. Garris
Severn, NC - Mr. Harold L. Garris, age 79, of Severn, NC, died Friday, April 8, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
Mr. Garris was born August 23, 1931 in Northampton County, NC the son of the late Harry Garris and Hazel Woodard Garris. He was also preceded in death by his brother Basil Garris.
Mr. Garris a member of the Severn Town Council for many years and a retired fireman with Severn Fire Department. He worked for many years with Melvin Mann Sandpit and worked until the age of 75 with Severn Peanut Company.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a good friend to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sue Jernigan Garris. His daughters, Debbie Burke of Murfreesboro, NC and Marie Forney and her husband Steven of Greensboro, NC. His grandchildren, Ashley Etheridge and her husband Jon of Midlothian, VA, Spencer Forney and Sydney Forney, both of Greensboro, NC. A great-granddaughter, Debra Grace Etheridge. His sister-in-law, Mary Lucy Garris. Two nephews, Larry Garris and Craig Garris.
Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Severn Baptist Church in Severn, NC with Rev. Brent Hobbs and Rev. Tim Hogan officiating. Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery.

Lionel Ollie Lucas, III
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Lionel Ollie Lucas, III, age 48, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
Lionel was born May 30, 1962, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was predeceased by his father, Lionel O. Lucas, Jr., his grandfather Seborn Rook and his grandmother Lillian G. Rook.
Survivors include his mother Glenda R. Rawlings and his step-father, Pete Rawlings of Roanoke Rapids. His son Jonathan Lucas of Roanoke Rapids, NC. His sister, Lisa Lucus of Norfolk, VA.
Graveside services will be held, Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Steve Mullenix officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Joyce Marie Melvin Edwards
Garysburg, NC - Joyce Marie Melvin Edwards, age 68, of Garysburg, NC, passed away March 31, 2011 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.
Joyce was born on November 3, 1942 in Franklin, VA, the daughter of the late Brink Melvin and Maude Johnson Melvin Price. She was also preceded in death by her step-father Russell Price and a son Donnie Ray Edwards.
Survivors include her husband, Eddie "W.D." Lee Edwards of Garysburg, NC, her daughter, Donna Wilson and husband Tony of Stony Creek, VA, her two brothers Paul Melvin and Marvin Melvin and wife Marie all of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Her five grandchildren, Devin and Alyssa Lassiter, Lisa, David, and Tyler Wilson. A special friend, just like a her son, James "Rex" Crowley of Charlotte, NC.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 4, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Donald Gregory officiating. Burial will follow in the Edwards Family Cemetery in Garysburg, NC.
