Mrs. Betty Blowe Ellis

Murfreesboro, NC - Mrs. Betty Blowe Ellis, age 87, of Murfreesboro, NC, died Monday, March 28, 2011 at Northampton Nursing Home and Rehab in Jackson, NC.

Mrs. Ellis was born June 3, 1923 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Raleigh Blowe and Nannie Liverman Blowe. She was also predeceased by her first husband A.R. Mann Jr., her second husband Herod Ellis, her sisters, Ruth Martin and Mary Forbes and a brother Raleigh Blowe Jr.

She was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Narron of Rocky Mount, NC, Betty Hill (Don) of Rocky Mount, NC, Joan Harmon (Herman) of Ahoskie, NC, Gayle L. Mann (Ronnie Plumley) and Tammy Mann (Donna Tritt) of Mufreesboro. Her son, Ray Mann (Leigh Ann) also of Murfresboro. Ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Also her extended family at Northampton Nursing Home and Rehab and a special thank you for their loving care and friendship.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro with Rev. Josh Parsons and Rev. Brent Hobbs officiating.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northampton Nursing Home and Rehab, Jackson, NC 27845.

Samuel Earl Johnson

NASHVILLE, TN – ROCKY MOUNT, NC - Samuel Earl Johnson, age 71, went to be with His Lord and Savior on March 27, 2011. After a battle with lung cancer, he passed away at his Lake Gaston home surrounded by his loving family and treasured friends.

Sam Johnson was born at home in Seaboard, NC, on February 7, 1940 to the late Sam and Hazel Maddrey Johnson. He graduated from Seaboard High School in 1958, and entered the work force while completing a degree in data processing at Hardbarger Business College in Raleigh, NC. He married on April 12, 1964 in Galatia, NC, and bought his first home in Garner, NC, in 1966. He and his wife, Margaret, moved to the Rocky Mount area in 1971 and settled in the Battleboro community for 33 years. Sam was a business forms salesman who worked for many companies before starting his own, Better Business Products, in 1976. He retired at age 62. When his grandson was born in 2006, Grandpa Sam moved to Nashville, TN to spend his retirement years chasing little Sam and enjoying his Lake Gaston, NC, home. He is a dual member in good standing in the Phoenix Lodge #131 of free and accepted masons in Nashville, TN, and the Corinthian Lodge #0230 of Rocky Mount, NC. Sam was known for his servant’s heart, dedication to the Lord, love of Duke basketball, and handyman talents. Most of all, he treasured his family, friends, and neighbors who will miss him dearly.

He leaves behind a wife of 47 years, Margaret Blythe Johnson; a daughter, Jennifer Johnson Holt, and son-in-law, Brian Holt. He is survived by one grandson, Samuel Awbrey Holt. He is also survived by four sisters: Loretta Buckner, Jean Lawrence, Rachel Turner, and husband Bill, and Susan Moseley, and husband, Donny; and one uncle, James Maddrey.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, at Battleboro Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Horace Ward and Rev. Joshua Blythe officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC.

The family will receive friends for visitation prior to the service between 12:30 - 2:00 PM at the church.

Mr. Douglas Barron Flythe, Jr.

Conway, NC - Mr. Douglas Barron Flythe, Jr., age 80, of Conway, NC, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Flythe was born December 16, 1930 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Douglas Barron Flythe Sr. and Ina Lassiter Flythe. He was also predeceased by a sister, Joyce Hardin.

Mr. Flythe was a US Air Force veteran. After completing his service in the US Air Force, Mr. Flythe worked for the National Guard of North Carolina as an Administrative Supply Technician, of which he was a proud member for many years. He was also a dedicated member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Shirley Carter Flythe. His children, Richard Flythe and his fiancé Rhonda Burgess of Conway, Shirley Flythe Rose and her husband Gurney of Seaboard, Sharon Flythe of Aydlett, NC and Donna Flythe Steigelman and her husband Patrick of Aydlett, NC. A sister, Bertha Rose of Margarettsville, NC. His aunt, Essie Woods of Conway, NC. His grandchildren Edwin Rose, Brian Flythe, Justin Rose and Kevin Flythe. His great-grandchildren, Chelsea Rose, Cole Rose, Corey Flythe, Nathan Flythe, and Caroline Flythe. Several nieces and nephews. His beloved pets, Shag and Pearl Dean.

Funeral services will be held, Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ed Drew officiating. Burial will follow at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Mary Ann Davis

Pendleton, NC - Mary Ann Davis, age 70, of Pendleton, NC, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Mary Ann was born September 2, 1940 in Lafayette, Indiana, the daughter of the late Richard Franklin Sliger and Gladys Ann Sliger.

Survivors include her three sons, Kenny Davis and wife Rose of Conway, NC, John Davis and wife Colleen of Pendleton, NC, and Darrel Davis and wife Penny of Garner, NC. One daughter Patti Davis of Pendleton, NC. Six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step-grandsons.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster and Rev. Darrel Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Conway Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Galatia Baptist Church WMU.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mrs. Mary Frances Hux White

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Mary Frances Hux White, age 88, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. White was born February 2, 1923 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the daughter of the late William Floyd Hux and Mary Jane Collins Hux. She was predeceased by a son, Dale White.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harvey Lee White Jr. Her daughters, Debbie Demers and her husband Joe of Westbrook, ME, Susan White Glover and her husband Steve of Roanoke Rapids, and Mary LaChance and her husband Armand of Raymond, ME. Her son, Lee White and his wife Kate of Beaumont, Texas. Her sister, Josephine Kittrell of Roanoke Rapids and her brother William Hux also of Roanoke Rapids. Her grandchildren, Michelle, Carol, Tina, Jimmy, Christy, Beth, Steven, Patrick, Alex and Anne. Twenty-three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Geoffrey Hardee officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Lynwood Henry "ToeJoe" Sorie

Enfield, NC - Lynwood Henry "ToeJoe" Sorie, age 62, of Enfiled, NC, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at his home.

Lynwood was born April 4, 1948 in Halifax County NC, the son of the late Johnnie Lynwood Sorie and Joyce Bowers Sorie. He was also preceded in death by a brother Kenneth "BigEye" Sorie.

Survivors include his wife Margo Sorie of Enfield, NC. His three daughters, Kim Sorie Newell and husband Terry-Michael of Zebulon, NC, Joy Duncan and Crystal Johnson both of Enfield, NC. Also "ToeJoe" is survived by eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside service will be held, Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Sorie Family Cemetery in Enfield, NC with Rev. Carl Green and Rev. Terry-Michael Newell officiating.

The family will receive friends at 7460 Ringwood Rd, Enfield, NC 27823 after the service.

Mr. David Stephen Storey

Conway, NC - Mr. David Stephen Storey, age 37, of Conway, NC, died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

David was born August 20, 1973 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Jack and Ruth Storey.

David graduated from Northeast Academy in 1991. While at Northeast David was very active in sports and participated in playing basketball, football and baseball. David graduated from Halifax Community College with a degree in Basic Law Enforcement. He worked as a police officer for nine years with the Murfreesboro and Conway Police Departments. He was employed and worked at Nucor for the past nine years.

David was a member of the Fire Tower Hunt Club and he loved to hunt and fish.

Survivors include his wife Wendy Storey. His daughters, Rachelle, Rebecca and Emma Storey. His father and mother, Steve and Jean Storey of Jackson, NC. His sister, Stephanie Storey Deacon and her husband John of Jackson, NC. His grandparents, Sam and Mary Frances Cannon of Pleasant Hill, NC.

His mother-in-law Barbara Hasty of Roanoke Rapids. Two nieces, Sarah and Molly Deacon. His aunts and uncles, Judy Cannon of Roanoke Rapids, June Hux of Scotland Neck, NC, Jeff Cannon of Severn, NC, Ronald Storey and Carolyn Thompson, both of Conway, Crethie S. Scott of Garysburg, NC and Melba Simon of Oak Forrest, IL. Also many very special friends and co-workers.

Graveside services will be held, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 1:00 PM Conway Cemetery in Conway, NC with Rev. Ricky Barnes officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mr. John R. Tromans

Jackson, NC - Mr. John R. Tromans, age 78, of Jackson, NC, died Saturday in Greensboro, NC.

Mr. Tromans was born October 11, 1932, in Shifnel, England, the son of the late Joseph A. Tromans and Pattie Brooks Tromans. He had retired from Weldon Roofing Company.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, DeRother Boone Tromans. His son, Mike Tromans and his wife Rita of Roanoke Rapids. His sister, Margaret Lassiter of Newport News, VA.

His granddaughters, Amanda Hester and Amy Bennett and her husband Dennis. His great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Madelyn, and Dracen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 7, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC with Rev. Warren Heitzenrater, Rev. Bob Johnson and Rev. Sue Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Sunday from 7:00 until - 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

Elizabeth Pierce Casper

Garysburg, NC - Elizabeth Pierce Casper, age 93, of Garysburg, NC, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at her home.

Mrs. Casper was born January 10, 1918 in Norfolk, VA, the daughter of the late Nathan Pierce and Sarah Mansfield Pierce. She was also predeceased by her husband Arthur Thomas Casper, her son, Floyd Wilkins, her grandson Thomas Ray Woodard, her brothers, Berkley Pierce and Irvin Lee Pierce and her sister, Addie West. She was a member of East Tenth Church of Christ in Roanoke Rapids.

Survivors include her daughters, Betty Harrison of Roanoke Rapids, Grace Woodard of Jackson, and Judy Harrison and her husband Ronald of Garysburg. Her sisters, Margie Dozier of Chesapeake, VA, Dorothy Evans of Ahoskie, NC and her brother Thomas Pierce of Aulander, NC. Her grandchildren, Debra Sadewater, Amy Duke, Joy Baugham and Ronald Lynn Harrison. Her great-grandchildren, Kirsty Clay, Keely Clay, Brandon Woodard, Amber Woodard, Autumn Woodard, Andrew Poole, Bernadette Duke, Dakota Woodard and Kayla Harrison.

Graveside services will be held Monday, March 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Casper Family Cemetery with Minister Dave Chapman officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Sunday from 3:00 until 4:30 PM and other times at the home.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Tenth Street Church of Christ Building Fund, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Mrs. Catherine Lassiter Odom

Tarboro, NC - Mrs. Catherine Lassiter Odom, age 89, of Tarboro, NC, died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Tarboro Nursing Center.

Mrs. Odom was born September 14, 1921 in Northampton County, NC the daughter of the late Godwin Lassiter and Martha Warren Lassiter.

She was also predeceased by her husband, Broadus Wilson Odom and a sister Jean Wilder Holt
Mrs. Odom graduated from Rich Square High School as class valedictorian and graduated from Hardbarger Business College. She was a bookkeeper for Northampton County Schools, Roanoke Rapids City Schools and New Hanover County Schools.

Survivors include her nieces, Pam Morris and her husband Tony of Lake Gaston, Linda Julian of Holly Springs, NC, and Deborah H. Powell and her husband, Winfield Powell, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; two nephews, Owen Holt and his wife Kathy, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Ronnie Holt and his wife, Wendy, of Roanoke Rapids. Also several great-nieces and nephews

Graveside services will be held Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Lasker Cemetery in Lasker, NC with Rev. Rick Barnes officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Sunday from 1:30 until 2:30 PM prior to services.
