Hazel Cooley Pulley

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Hazel Cooley Pulley, age 83, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Monday, February 7, 2011 at Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill, VA.

Mrs. Pulley was born April 18, 1927 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Walter Field Cooley and Mattie Wright Cooley. She was also predeceased in death by her husband George Robert Pulley. She worked for J.P. Stevens and Company as a weaver for many years.

Survivors include her two daughters, Debra Herring and husband Ricky of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Susan King and husband Cliff of Ebony, VA. Her three grandsons, Jason Rook, John Rook and Bryan Herring all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, One brother, Calvin Cooley of New Mexico. Her sister Doreatha Caulder and husband Bobby of Hope Mills, NC, her seven great-grandchildren Cassidy, Alease, Jarret, Jacob, Cheyenne, Brianna and Harley. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a special niece Cheryl Moss of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. and other times at 805 Carolina Ave. Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC is handling the arrangements.

Clara Mae Lawrence Cummings

Ahoskie, NC - Clara Mae Lawrence Cummings, age 78, died February 4, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Cummings was born July 3, 1932 in Tyrell County NC, the daughter of the late Edgar Lawrence and Sudie Metoka Roughton Cummings.

Survivors include her daughter Patricia E. Matthews and husband Jimmy of Ahoskie, NC, Her three sons, James Cummings, Vernon Cummings both of Ahoskie, NC and Paul Cummings and wife Cindy of Aulander, NC, Her grandchildren Jeremy Matthews, Nikki, Kelly, Brandon, Johnathan Cummings, and Laura Wall., Her great-grandchildren, Zander Matthews, Chassidy Harmon and Emily Cummings.

Memorial services will be held Monday, February 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with the Rev. Bob Skeens officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Ahoskie, NC.

Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC is handling the arrangements.

Mrs. Kathryn Collie Sherrick

Enfield, NC - Mrs. Kathryn Collie Sherrick, age 78, of Enfield, NC, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Nash Grove Manor in Nashville, NC.

Mrs. Sherrick was born July 29, 1932 in Franklin County, NC, the daughter of the late Arthur Hunter Collie and Mollie Phelps Collie. She was a member of Enfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Alice Bainbridge of Rocky Mount, NC, Joan Ward of Roanoke Rapids, Joseph Sherrick of Middlesex, NC and Becky Sherrick of Four Oaks, NC. Ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC with Rev. Alvin Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday beginning at 1:00 PM prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Enfield Baptist Church, Enfield, NC 27823.

William Thomas Draper

Roanoke Rapids, NC - William Thomas Draper, age 87, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Tuesday, February 2, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. raper was born May 5, 1923 in Northampton County, North Carolina, the son of the late Richard Draper and Anna Deberry Draper. He worked as a salesman for many years while owning his own business. He was a member of Galatia Baptist Church, a mason and member of Widow’s Son Lodge 519 and a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife Myrtle Draper of Roanoke Rapids, NC. His son Ritchie and wife Jan Draper of Roanoke Rapids, NC. His two granddaughters Judith McKnight and husband Matt and Kelsey Draper. His sister-in-law Delcy Draper of Roanoke Rapids, NC, His sister-in-laws Mary Ann Davis of Murfreesboro, NC and Janet David of Texas. His brother-in-laws Kelly and wife Reba Davis of Conway, NC and Raby Davis of Bracey, VA. Also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 4, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M.

Mr. Samuel Parker Stephenson

Seaboard, NC - Mr. Samuel Parker Stephenson, age 62, of Seaboard, NC, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He fought a courageous battle against Multiple Sclerosis for the past 28 years.

Born May 21, 1948, Sam was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Britt Stephenson. He was a member of Seaboard Baptist Church.

Sam graduated from Northampton County High School and from North Carolina State University. He also had served in the North Carolina National Guard and also had earned his pilot’s license and loved flying.

Sam was a devoted Wolfpack fan and a loyal supporter of the NCSU Wolfpack Club. He rarely missed attending a home basketball game.

Sam was proud to be a farmer and when his health declined, he enjoyed riding out to his farms to check on the crops.

Sam is survived by his mother, Mildred Parker Stephenson of the home, his brother Joel and his wife Debbie. His nieces, Lynn Barefoot and her husband Wesley of Four Oaks, NC and Beth Pelter and her husband David of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his great-nieces, Nicole Barefoot, Ava and Lily Pelter and his great-nephew, Jordan Barefoot, as well as several cousins.

Graveside services will be held, Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC with Rev. Steve Trussel officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC Friday, January 28, 2011 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

The family would also like to thank Sam’s nurses and aides for their care and attention shown to him during his illness and a very special thank you to his employee and friend, Tony Branch.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sam’s memory to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 3101 Industrial Drive, Suite 210, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Mrs. Helen Frances Jones Griffin

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Helen Frances Jones Griffin, age 79, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at Guardian Care in Scotland Neck.

Mrs. Griffin was born September 27, 1931 in Roanoke Rapids, the daughter of the late Walter Jones and Bessie Starke Jones. She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Glenn Griffin Jr., who passed away December 17, 2010.

Survivors include her children, Diane Grant and her husband Jonathan, Clifton "Pee-Wee" Griffin, Judy Griffin and Frances Spence and her husband Beryl, all of Roanoke Rapids. Two sisters, Gloria "Deanie" Davis of Roanoke Rapids and Margaret Beaufort of Virginia Beach, VA.

Her grandchildren, Rhonda Jenkins and her husband Cliff, Laura Spence and fiancé Brock Weiss, Cory Grant and his significant other, Starr Odom and Sherry Spence. Five great-grandchildren, Allison Jenkins, Michaela Wallace, Zyler Grant, Paige Osborne, and Alexsa Spence. Several nieces and nephews including a special nephew Bob Jones.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Annie Marie Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and other times at the home.

Dwight "Dick" V. Adams

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Dwight "Dick" V. Adams, age 68, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died January 16, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center surrounded by family.

Dick was born July 29, 1942 in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late James Rufus Adams and Layla Navalle Dovie Tickel.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC since he was a young boy. He had a passion for race cars and his Harley’s, but his greatest loves were God, his wife, children and grandbabies.

Survivors include his wife of almost thirty eight years, Judy Mitchell Adams of Roanoke Rapids, NC, his brother, James Henry Adams and wife Faye, of Elm City, NC. Two daughters, Susan Clements Wilhelm and husband Jeff, Lori Clements Jones and husband Russell, one son Michael Wayne Clements and wife Sheri, all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Eight grandchildren Michael, Heather, Caitlin, Sara, Lyndsey, Ben, James, Allison and one great-grandchild Aiden.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Bane Angles officiating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 from 7:00 PM. until 8:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Mr. Harry George Culver

Roxobel, NC - Mr. Harry George Culver, age 77, of Roxobel, NC, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 as the result of an auto accident.

Mr. Culver was born July 22, 1933 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Harry A. Culver and Anna Belle Fogel.

He was currently serving as commissioner for the Town of Roxobel. He was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church and a Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Mulder Culver. His daughters, Mary Gibson and Brenda Barholm of Roxobel. His step-daughter, Kim Bonanno. His grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Richard, Crystal-Ann, Kyle, John and Nick. His great-grandchildren, Breanna, Mark Jr., Nathan and Isbella.

A memorial service will be held, Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC with Rev. Dave Rimel and Rev. Henry Boschen officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harry G. Culver Memorial Fund, c/o Sandy Run Baptist Church, Roxobel, NC.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Thomas Wayne Carroll

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Thomas Wayne Carroll, age 64, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Friday, January 14, 2011.

Wayne was born November 11, 1946 in Roanoke Rapids, NC the son of the late Ovid Carroll and Della Dickens Carroll. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Churchill, Willie, Jimmy, Albert and Charlie Carroll. He was a building contractor and a master carpenter who always enjoyed working.

Survivors include his son, Thomas Wayne Carroll II and his daughter, Tonya Renee Carroll both of Roanoke Rapids. His brother Ovid "Ratt" Carroll of Roanoke Rapids and his sister Etta Stansbury of Roanoke Rapids. His grandchildren, Baylee Elizabeth Carroll, Bryan Nicholas Carroll and Lauryn Nycole Carroll.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Tony Smith officiating.

Mrs. Louise Lassiter Hoggard

Rocky Mount, NC - Mrs. Louise Lassiter Hoggard, age 85, formerly of Lewiston, NC, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at her daughter’s home in Rocky Mount.

Mrs. Hoggard was born March 14, 1925 in Aulander, NC. She lived in Lewiston, NC for many years and moved to Rocky Mount to live with her daughter a few years ago. She was predeceased by her husband Wilmer Scott Hoggard.

Survivors include her daughter Donna H. Eways of Rocky Mount, NC. Her grandson, Kamal Eways and a great-granddaughter, Alana Kyle Eways.

A memorial service will be held, Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
