Mrs. Hazel Davis Harrell
Rich Square, NC - Mrs. Hazel Davis Harrell, age 83, passed away March 15, 2012.
Mrs. Harrell was born June 15, 1928 in Murray County, GA, the daughter of the late Onnie Keister Davis and Elsie Patterson Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Edward Harrell, two sisters, Jean Fulmer and Betty Warrick and a brother, Bobby Davis.
She is survived by her daughter Marion H. Miles, two grandchildren, Melissa Taylor and Mitchell Vann. Three great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Caitlin Abrams and Michael Vann. Two great, great-grandchildren Richard and Alexis Vann. Her siblings, Ray Davis of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Frank Davis and Wanda Barnes, both of Greenville, NC, and Fred Davis of Petal Mississippi. Also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 4:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, with Rev. Adam King officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Saturday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
Mr. John Calvin Maitland
Chapel Hill, NC - Mr. John Calvin Maitland, 57, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at UNC Chapel Hill after a long illness.
He was the son of Jeanette Cummings and the late Linwood C. Maitland, of South Hill, VA.
His wife, Wanda N. Maitland and son, Christopher John Maitland of Roanoke Rapids, survived him. He is also survived by a step-daughter, Pamela Lynn Jones and step-son Jason Lee Norwood; grandchildren Jacob Cameron Maitland, Makayla Ivey Maitland; step-grandchildren Allyssa Lynn Norwood, Chase Allen Craig Jones and Desiree Kaitlyn Jones and step-great-grandchild Gabriella Lynn Norwood all of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Surviving are sisters Sue Maitland and significant other Carlton of Jarratt, VA, Shelby and Wallace Conner of Warfield, VA, Patricia Cone and fiancé John of Hopewell, VA, and brother Wayne Maitland of Freeman, VA.
Survived also by nieces and nephews; Stephanie, Brandy, Shannon, Dusty and Joey; a great-niece Briana and great-nephews Gavin, Gage and Blaze.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday March 18, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the Massey Funeral Home Chapel, Roanoke Rapids, burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends Saturday March 17, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids.

Sarah Hargrave Davis
Conway, NC - Sarah Hargrave Davis, age 84, of Conway, NC, died Monday, March 12, 2012 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
Mrs. Davis was born February 5, 1928 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late William Henry Hargrave and Lena James Maddrey Hargrave. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Charlie P. Bryant, her second husband L.E. Davis and her brother Henry Stanley Hargrave. She was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sister, Lillian H. Davis of Conway, NC.
Graveside services will be held, Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. David Foster officiating.

Mr. Jeffrey Wayne Benner
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Jeffrey Wayne Benner, 47, died March 1, 2012 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. He is preceded in death by his father John William Benner.
He is survived by his wife Wendy Wright Benner, his mother Gwen Freaner Benner Lane and husband Eugene Of Scottland Neck, NC, his son Samuel Douglas Benner of the home, his daughter Stephanie Christine Benner of Roanoke Rapids, NC, two step-sons, Christopher Lee Biagi Jr. and Robin Michael Biagi of the home, a grandson Paul Wayne Wright, a brother Carl Douglas "Butch" Benner and wife Kathy of Wilson, sisters-in-law Cindy Collins and husband Russ of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and June Wood and husband John of Arkansas, a father and mother-in-law Randolph and Virginia Wright of Roanoke Rapids and a special friend Steven Conner.

Aulander, NC - Chris "Crisco" Holloman, 41, died February 29, 2012. Chris was a member of New Vision Ministries in Murfreesboro, NC, and employed by Liverman’s Metal Recycling.
He is preceded in death by his mother Paulette Davidson Holloman, his father Joseph Carol Holloman and grandparents Hardy and Ruth Davidson.
He is survived by his wife Holly Liverman Holloman, his daughter Chloe Holloman of the home and Hayleigh Holloman of Ohio.

Mr. Dan Brawley Moss, Sr.
Enfield, NC - Mr. Dan Brawley Moss, Sr., 78, died, February 29, 2012 at Breckenridge Retirement Center, Rocky Mount, NC.
Mr. Moss was a member of Enfield Baptist Church, Enfield Masonic Lodge and served on the Halifax County School Board for 26 years.
Mr. Moss never met a stranger, enjoyed talking to everyone he met and he was very proud of his grandchildren and loved them dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents Clifton D. Moss and Grace Brawley Moss, wife Mary Whitby Moss, his brother, Robert Allen Moss and granddaughter Amanda Greene.
He is survived by his daughters Luanne Moss of Enfield, NC, Ruth Robinson of Kill Devil Hills, NC, his son Dan Brawley Moss Jr. of Enfield, NC, his brother Clifton Dean Moss Jr. of Zebulon, NC, six grandchildren Mark Moseley, Ryan Moseley, G. W. Robinson, Taylor Robinson and one great-grandchild Dylan Moseley.

Mrs. Janet Todd Simmons
Woodland, NC - Mrs. Janet Todd Simmons, age 80, of Woodland, NC, died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Greendale Forest in Snow Hill, NC.
Mrs. Simmons was born March 8, 1931 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Harland Lockwood Todd and Hazel Glover Todd. She was also predeceased by a son, Archibald "Tony" McDowell, III. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and co-owner of Simmons Enterprises which owned several business’s in Hertford County, and Northampton County, for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Simmons Gupton and her husband Eddie of Winterville, NC, and her son Charles Sterling Simmons and his wife Sharon of Emporia, VA. Three grandchildren, Scott Gupton, Ryan Gupton and Amy Simmons.
Graveside services will be held, Thursday March 1, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC, with Rev. Ricky Barnes officiating.

Mr. James D. Bell
Ahoskie, NC - Mr. James D. Bell, age 85, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Vidant-Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
Born in Halifax County, NC, Mr. Bell was the son of the late James Franklin Bell and Hester Taylor Bell. Mr. Bell served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include, his wife Betty McKell Bell, five children, John Bell of Fredricksburg, VA, James D. Bell, Jr. of Ahoskie, Wanda P. Perry of Ahoskie, David Earl Bell of Ahoskie, and Catherine Elaine Bell of Ahoskie, his sister, Mavelyn Ginn of Murfreesboro, NC, three grandchildren Mandy Feher, Jim Perry, and Alyssa Bell, ten step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 25, 2012 in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, NC, with interment in the Aulander Cemetery.

Mrs. Edna Moss Elam
Halifax, NC - Mrs. Edna Moss Elam died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Halifax, in Weldon, NC, with her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter and grandson at her side.
Edna was born in Boydton, Va., January 23, 1916, the eldest child of John Watkins Moss and Almeta Harris Moss. On March 16, 1935, she married Arthur Thompson Elam, and soon joined Ephesus Baptist Church at Smith’s Cross Roads in South Hill, VA, where the Elam family were members. After World War II, she and Arthur traveled across the U.S. visiting many states and finally settled near Van Nuys, CA for a time. Family brought them back east where they settled in Halifax, NC, in 1948. She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur T. Elam; brothers: Luther Warren Moss, Richard Austin Moss, Hillman Smith Moss, Winston Albright Moss and sisters: Rubena Tennessee Moss Gaylord and Louise Moss Klinger.
If you grew up in Halifax then you most likely have been fed by Edna Elam. She was known as the best cook in Halifax and so generously fed anyone who came to her door. She baked beautiful cakes for many school functions and events. She was den mother to her son’s Cub Scout pack for many years. Edna Elam loved people but most of all her family and friends.
She is survived by her son John Arthur Elam and wife Cindy, of Halifax, NC, grandchildren Amy France (husband Jody), James Massey (wife Sara), great-grandchildren, Jeremy Tripp, Logan Burnette, Madison and Morgan (The Princess) Burnette and Camden Massey. She is survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. and a very special niece, Linda Underwood of Hillsboro NC, who was always there for her, she is survived also by Jason Sutherland & Kaitlin Barkely (nephew & niece of John & Cindy), who she loved also and enjoyed their visits.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the home of her son John Elam 338 King St. Halifax, NC.
Burial service will be private. She will be buried beside her beloved husband in South Hill, Va. at Ephesus Baptist Church. Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home Roanoke Rapids, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Ephesus Baptist Church, 4198 Goodes Ferry Road, South Hill, Va. 23970.
