Mr. Donald Lee Hale
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Donald Lee Hale, 70, died February 14, 2012 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Mr. Hale served his country in the US Coast Guard and was retired from the US Postal Service in Rocky Mount, NC. He was a Mason, an amateur Astronomer and lover of all animals. He also enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends everyday at 3:00 PM.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence G. "Jack" and Ruby Faust Hale.
He is survived by his wife Irma Mayle Hale of the home and a brother Larry Graham Hale of Lake Gaston, NC.
Graveside services will be held Friday February 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC, with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Thursday from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and at other times the family will be at the home.
Mrs. Lucy Clary Rose
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Lucy Clary Rose, 90, died February 13, 2012 at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehab Center, Weldon, NC.
Mrs. Rose was a member of Victory Baptist Church and the last surviving of ten children of the late William Henry and Georgia Anna Perry Clary. She was also preceded in death by her husband Harry H. Rose, her brother Lawrence A. Clary and her sister Bernice Truitt.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, a special Sister-In-Law Blanche Rose DeBerry and a special Brother-In-Law Lynnburg Rose and wife Hannah and caregivers Frances and Boogie Vincent.
Funeral services will be held Friday February 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home Chapel, Roanoke Rapids, NC with the Rev. Michael Jones officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
Mr. Malloy Clayton Love
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Malloy Clayton Love, age 75, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, February 13, 2012 at his home.
Born March 24, 1936 in Halifax County, NC, he was the son of the late William Astor Love and the late Jessie Allen Love. Mr. Love was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean War.
Mr. Love was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Clayton Love and his sister Lois Love.
Surviving are his son, Douglas Love and his wife Sabrina of Pleasant Hill, NC, a daughter Katherine Love McKenzie of Roanoke Rapids, Grandchildren, Crystal "Crickett" (Derek) McKenzie, James McKenzie, Brett (Christian) Love, April Perez, Lindsey Parsley, Stephen Jr. "Buster" Love, Crystal White and twelve great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are the mother of his children Penny Love and his special friend Camilla Cannon of Faison's Old Tavern.
Services will be held Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Billy Howell officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service. At other times the family will be at Mr. Love’s home.
Mrs. Sarah Phelps Howell
Windsor, NC - Mrs. Sarah Phelps Howell, 74, died February 6, 2012 at her home in Windsor. Sarah is to be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and mema. The family wishes to thank Hospice for all their care and support.
She was preceded in death by her parents Russel W. and Carthinia Harrison Phelps.
Survivors include her husband of almost 59 years, Dyerl Franklin Howell, her daughters, Ann Branch, Betty Wolfe, Gloria Robinson and Lynn Hoggard all of Lewiston and Bonnie Hamson of Aulander. Her sons, Frankie Howell of Louisburg and David Howell of Aulander. Her brothers and sisters, Julian Phelps of Moyock, Lois Cullifer of Windsor, Wayne Phelps of Moyock, Jean Hoggard of Plymouth and Shelia Byrd of Windsor. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Ebeneezer Assembly of God Church with Rev. Tim Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the Hoggard Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Tuesday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.
Mrs. Sarah Willey Harrison
Enfield, NC -- Mrs. Sarah Willey Harrison, age 83, died Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount, NC, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Harrison was the owner / operator of 301 Auto Parts in Enfield, and was a gracious hostess of family and friends at traditional Christmas Eve open houses and Super Bowl gatherings. She truly loved her "Little Palace" at Atlantic Beach. The loves of her life were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many special friends.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda Chilton and her husband Sonny of Ararat, NC, and Terri Anderson of Rocky Mount, NC, her sons, Price Harrison and his wife Kim, of Enfield, NC, and Gib Harrison and his wife Pam of Manteo, NC, her sister Marjorie Edwards of Raleigh, NC, and her brother R.G. Willey, Jr. and his wife Arnette of Enfield, NC, her grandchildren Cathy Holmes and her husband Mike, Elizabeth Gallop and her husband Ben, Trey Harrison and his wife Anne, Grayson Moser and her husband Jason, Sarah Anderson, Martha Arrington, and her husband Rickey, Britt Bennett and her husband Chris, Will Harrison and Keeli Harrison. She has four great-grandchildren and a special friend, Rob Whitaker of Enfield, NC.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 5, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Enfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Robl officiating.
The family will receive friends at Enfield United Methodist Church Saturday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. At other times they will be at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Enfield United Methodist Church or to a charitable organization of your choice.
Mr. Fred Arnold McNeer, Jr.
Charlotte, NC - Mr. Fred Arnold McNeer, Jr., passed away Friday, January 27, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital. Fred was born July 27, 1927 to Fred Arnold McNeer of West Virginia and Mary Ellen Millikin McNeer of Enfield, NC.
He graduated from Durham High School, Class of 1945, and Duke University, Class of 1950. At Duke, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity and was a yearbook photographer.
Fred served in the U.S. Navy following high school at the end of World War II for a little over a year. He was called back to active duty in August 1950 until April 1952 during the Korean War.
Upon discharge he went to work for Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S. in Indianapolis, IN. He was transferred to New York City from 1952 to 1957 then transferred to Atlanta, GA, and then to Charlotte, NC, in 1959. He worked as a real estate appraiser and commercial real estate loan solicitor with The Equitable until the end of 1965. Mr. McNeer then went to work with North Carolina National Bank (now Bank of America) for 25 years in the commercial real estate lending area. He retired at the end of 1990.
He is survived by numerous cousins scattered over the United States.
A lifelong Episcopalian, he was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte where a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2012. A private interment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 115 West 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28202.
Local arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC.
Mr. Wilson Lee Mitchell
Aulander, NC - Mr. Wilson Lee Mitchell, 69, died January 20, 2012 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
Mr. Mitchell lived all his life in Hertford, and Bertie, counties. He was a farmer and had worked for Maola Milk and Lance, Inc. Mr. Mitchell had a neighborhood garden and shared it with many people. He loved his family. Mr. Mitchell was a member of Saint John’s Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy Lee and Margaret Williford Mitchell, His wife Mattie Whitley Mitchell, his son Norman Lee Mitchell, his sister Lenora Mitchell Hughes and brother Sidney Mitchell.
Survivors include his sons, David Mitchell and wife Melissa of Parkton, NC, and Michael Mitchell and wife Brenda of the home. His sisters Stella Hofler and husband Willie of Gatesville, Jo Winn and husband Tom of Woodbridge, VA, Julia Dixon and husband Robbie of Grifton, Patricia Penwell and Winnifred Mitchell both of Millennium. His brother, Julius Mitchell of Aulander, his sister-in-law Jean Mitchell of Murfreesboro. His grandchildren, Christopher, Chandler Lee and Chase Mitchell of Parkton, NC, Andrew and Lindsey Mitchell of the home. His special nephew whom he treated as a son E. Lee Penwell and wife Deborah of South Mills. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 23, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, NC, with Mr. E. Lee Penwell officiating.

Janice Barnes Harrell
Jackson, NC - Janice Barnes Harrell, age 85, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Northampton Nursing and Rehab.
Mrs. Harrell was born July 12, 1926 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Dolph Bailey Barnes and Maggie Futrell Barnes. She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Edward Harrell. She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Harrell Bennett and her husband Mike and her son Bobby Harrell and his wife Glenda, all of Jackson, NC. Her grandson, Daniel Bennett and his wife Ashley of Roanoke Rapids, her grandson Bryan Bennett of Raleigh and her great-granddaughter Taylor Bennett of Raleigh. Her brothers. Odell Barnes and his wife Marie of Kitty Hawk, NC, Talmadge Barnes and his wife Betty Lou of Rich Square, NC, Horace Barnes and his wife Margaret of Jackson, NC, and Burland Barnes and his wife Rita of Louisville, Kentucky. Her sister, Gwendolyn Bazemore of Windsor, NC, her sister-in-law, Helen Barnes of Jackson, NC, and a brother-in-law, Oscar Harris of Scotland Neck, NC. Also many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Friday, January 20, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Futrell Family Cemetery with Rev. Dan Earnhardt officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Thursday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rehoboth United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Judy Washington Adkins
Enfield, NC – Mrs. Judy Washington Adkins, age 68, died Saturday, January 14, 2012 at her home.
Mrs. Adkins was born May 22, 1943 in Scotland Neck, NC. She was preceded in death by her father Randolph Washington and a son Chad Adkins.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Adkins. Her son, Kelly Adkins and his wife Lisa of Rocky Mount, NC. Her daughter, Beth Schueet and her husband Adam of Raleigh, NC. Her mother Goldie Washington of Enfield, NC.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC with Rev. Charles Robl officiating.

Mrs. Garnet Abshire
Pleasant Hill, NC – Mrs. Garnet Abshire, 99 of Pleasant Hill, NC, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at Highland Gardens in Pleasant Hill, NC.
Mrs. Abshire was born June 3, 1912 in Kanawha County, VA, the daughter of the late German Richards and Pearl Armstrong Richards. She was also predeceased by her husband Curtis Abshire and one son Ronald Curtis "Sonny" Abshire.
Survivors include her son, Don Abshire of Roanoke Rapids, and Jackie Abshire of Port Orange, FL. Twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating.
