Mrs. Mary Inez Bass Mayle
Pleasant Hill, NC - Mrs. Mary Inez Bass Mayle, age 87, of Pleasant Hill, NC, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Mrs. Mayle was born February 2, 1924 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Lloyd Bass and Mary Irene Grizzard Bass. She was also predeceased by her husband Alvin Mayle and two sisters, Agnes Bass Moore and Virginia Bass Forrest.
Mrs. Mayle was a lifetime member of Bethel Baptist Church where she loved to sing in the church choir. She always loved Bethel Church and always took a very active part in the church. She was always working in her yard where she loved to grow flowers. She retired from J.P. Stevens and Company in Roanoke Rapids.
Survivors include her sister, Lucille Bass Jones and her brother Curtis Alton Bass, both of Pleasant Hill. Also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Lane officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of her sister. Lucille Jones.
Mr. James Gregory
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. James Gregory, age 92, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Gregory was born October 1, 1919 in Ivor, VA, the son of the late Otto Gregory and Annie Johnson Gregory Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Inez Gregory, two sons, James Leon "Jimmy" Gregory and James Melvin "Dukie" Gregory and a grandson, John Curtis Gregory. He was a retired truck driver and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Fresh Fire Assembly of God Church in Roanoke Rapids.
He is survived by his children Sue Brooks and her husband David of Scottsville, Kentucky, Rev. Donald Gregory and his wife Sharon of Roanoke Rapids, Lola G. Cornwell and her husband G.S. of Conway, NC, Larry Randolph "Randy" Gregory and his wife Mary of Roanoke Rapids, Terry Conrad Gregory and his wife Leslie of Conway, NC, and Gene Gregory and his wife Sheila of Roanoke Rapids. Nineteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. His step-brother, W.D. Edwards of Garysburg, NC, and two step-sisters, Bertha May Bracey of Roxobel, NC, and Cretha Pearl Bracey of Rocky Mount, NC.
Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Fresh Fire Assembly of God Church with Rev. Wallace Phillips and Rev. Anna Marie Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Tuesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
Mrs. Margaret Futrell Matthews
Milwaukee, NC - Mrs. Margaret Futrell Matthews, age 86, of Milwaukee, NC, died Friday, April 12, 2013 at Northampton Nursing and Rehab in Jackson.
Mrs. Matthews was born March 2, 1927 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Richard Elwood Futrell and Delia Lane Futrell.
She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
She was known as being a wonderful cook and she loved caring for her family.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Rufus Adam Matthews.
Her daughter, Ellen M. Glover and her husband Jimmy of Jackson.
Her son Phil Matthews and his wife Mary of Conway, NC.
Her grandchildren, Benjamin Ray Glover (Dania)of Garysburg, Melissa Diane Glover Miles(Hank) of Edenton, Adam Scott Glover(Megan) of Wilmington, Jenny Lynn Matthews McKellar(Scott) of Rocky Mount and Brandon Adam Matthews of Pine Knoll Shores. Her great-grandchildren, William Jackson Miles, Mary-Grace Miles, Daisy Elizabeth Glover, Debbie Bernice Glover, Delenn Cahoon, Timothy James "Jimmy" Glover, John Matthews "Jack" McKellar and Matthew Adam McKellar.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Bethany United Methodist Church in Milwaukee, with Rev. Susan Cobb and Mr. Robert Earl Williams officiating.
Burial will follow at Milwaukee Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Mrs. Matthews in Milwaukee.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff of Northampton Nursing and Rehab and Continuum Home Care and Hospice for the wonderful care of Mrs. Matthews.

Dorothy Hyman Nowell
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Dorothy Hyman Nowell, age 72, of Carolina Ave., Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at her home.
Dorothy was born March 26, 1941 in Norfolk, VA.
The daughter of the late Julian Hyman and Viola Nicholson Hyman.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert James Nowell, Sr.
They were married for 54 years until Robert’s passing.
Survivors include her children, Robert J. Nowell, Jr. and his wife Jennie, Anthony Mark Nowell and his wife Delores, Julian Ryan Nowell and Randy Lee Nowell; her grandchildren, Michael James Brown and Steven James Nowell; also a niece, Mary Ann Davis, and a sister-in-law Betty Hyman. Graveside services will be held at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Monday April 8, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Tony Smith officiating.

Mr. Lee Roy "Mr. B" Biggerstaff
Jackson, NC - Mr. Lee Roy "Mr. B" Biggerstaff, age 83, of Jackson, NC, passed away Sunday April 7, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.
Mr. Biggerstaff was born November 2, 1929 in Charlotte, NC, the son of the late Carse Lee Biggerstaff and Carrie Mae Jones Biggerstaff.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Carse Lee Biggerstaff II.
Mr. Biggerstaff received a Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Arts Degree from East Carolina University.
He was a Public School Administrator in Bertie, Halifax Brunswick, Northampton Counties and Roanoke Rapids City Schools.
He was a member of Jackson Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and a member of the Board of Deacons.
He was also past member of the Jackson Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Olivia White Biggerstaff; his children Shiela Biggerstaff of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy B. McCaskey of Newport, NC, and Chris Biggerstaff and his wife Sheryl of Roanoke Rapids; six grandchildren, Gregory L. Biggerstaff of Tampa, Florida, Josh Askew and his wife Allison of Roanoke Rapids, Shelley Askew of Roanoke Rapids, Audrey Pate and her husband Bryan of Patuxent River, Maryland, Casey Clubb and her husband Brett of Lynchburg, VA, and Brian Biggerstaff of Roanoke Rapids; nine great-grandchildren, and his sister, Robbie Genton of East Stroudsburg, PA.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC.
Burial will follow at Old Trinity Cemetery, Scotland Neck, NC.

Lila Griffith Nelson Morris
Jackson, NC - Lila Griffith Nelson Morris, 96, passed Wednesday, March 06, 2013. Lila was a native of Garysburg, NC, and the daughter of the late Charles Thomas Griffith and Ruth James Griffith. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Ivey Griffith and James Linwood Robbins, Sr., and a nephew, James Linwood Robbins, Jr. She was widowed by Harry Nelson of Garysburg and W. P. Morris of Jackson. Lila was a lifetime member of Garysburg United Methodist Church and a friend to Jackson United Methodist Church. She served as organist in GUMC for many years. Lila worked for the Northampton County office of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service and retired after 42 years of service. Lila is survived by her niece, Alice G. "Betty" Moore of Littleton, nephews, Joe Thomas Robbins of Jackson, NC and Wesley Nelson Robbins and wife Leesa of Raleigh, NC, sister-in-law, Florence Robbins Ancarrow and husband Willie of Roanoke Rapids, NC, step-daughters Goldie Eley, Helen Bloom, and Hattie Beasley and husband Jim, all of Jackson, NC. She is also survived by her great-nieces, Marci Robbins of Garysburg, NC, Jennifer Mayle and husband Eric of Halifax, NC, and Alycia Mayle of Roanoke Rapids, NC. The family also acknowledges Linda Presley of Halifax, NC for her kindness and wonderful care to Lila over the last 12 months. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, March 8th at Garysburg United Methodist Church in Garysburg, NC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson Thursday evening, March 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Mr. Harry Louis Light, Jr.
Littleton, NC - Mr. Harry Louis Light, Jr., of Littleton, NC, and formerly of Enfield, NC, died Friday, March 8, 2013 at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids. Mr. Light was born August 2, 1929 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Harry Louis Light, Sr. and Lillie Lovegrove Light. He was a past member of the Enfield Fire Department for many years and served as assistant chief. He was a US Army Veteran and a member of the VFW. He was also a longtime member of the Enfield United Methodist Church and retired from the NC Department of Transportation as a maintenance supervisor. He is survived by his wife Gertrude Jones Light, his son Jerry Light and his wife Marie of Roanoke Rapids, his daughter Barbara Light Edwards and her husband Joe of Littleton; his sister, Shirley Light Falls of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Blair Thompson and his fiancé Nicole Franklin, Stephanie Light Burkee and her husband Jason, and Jarrod Light. Graveside services will be held Monday, March 11, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC, with Rev. Greg Powell officiating. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM and other times at the home. Mr. Herbert Perry Bland
Enfield, NC - Mr. Herbert Perry Bland, age 93, of Enfield, NC, died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Nash General Hospital. Mr. Bland was born November 18, 1919 in Tillery, NC, the son of the late Herbert Lee Bland and Lenora Parks Bland. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Renee Bland Crabtree, a sister Katy Etta Bland Hardison and two brothers, Robert Wiley Mincher and Johnny Mincher. Mr. Bland was a retired Exxon Oil Distributer and a member of Enfield Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Molly Balmer Sykes Bland, a grandson Jonathan Z. Crabtree of Four Oaks, NC, and a son-in-law, Phil Crabtree. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Enfield Baptist Church. Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Estelle Massey Lassiter, age 82, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Sunday, March 10, 2013 at her home. Mrs. Lassiter was born March 29, 1930 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late George Edward Massey and Narcissa Barnes Massey. She was also predeceased by seven brothers and sisters and her husband William "Kenny" Lassiter. Survivors include her sons, David Padgett and Mike Padgett, both of Roanoke Rapids, her daughter Deborah Francis and her husband Tommy of Littleton, NC; her brother, Willard Massey of Roanoke Rapids; six grandchildren, Renee Conte, Michael Padgett, Lisa Starling, Mandy Padgett, Tommy Francis III and Michael Johnson; seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Pastor Michael Jones officiating. Mary Virginia Barrow Burgwyn
Jackson, NC - Mary Virginia Barrow Burgwyn, age 100, of Jackson, NC, died March 9, 2013 at her home. Mary was born June 15, 1912 in Brunswick County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Leonard Curtis Barrow and Daisy Deane Doyle Barrow. She was also predeceased by her husband George Pollok Burgwyn, III. Survivors include her daughter Mary Burgwyn Newsome and her husband Dr. A. Ray Newsome of Winston-Salem, NC; her grandsons A.R. Newsome, Jr. and wife Dr. Lisa Newsome of Greensboro, NC, and Dr. George Burgwyn Newsome and wife Jody of Winston-Salem, NC; her sister, Anne Barrow Maness of Burlington, NC; seven great-grandchildren, and her faithful companion LaVern Suggs. Mary was very instrumental in starting the Jackson Woman’s Club and was one of the charter members of it as well. Mrs. Burgwyn was very active in her church and served on the Vestry for many years. Mary for her community service, received on her 100th birthday a commendation from the town of Jackson, making June 15th "Mary Virginia Burgwyn Day". Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 12:00 noon at The Episcopal Church of The Savior in Jackson, NC with Rev. Foy Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
