Death of a Promising Young Man
Dr. Robert H. Stancill, Jr., son of Dr. R. H. Stancill, of Margarettsville, died last Friday evening at Southern Pines, aged about 23 years.
His death is a sad one.
He was an only child, and a young man of great promise.
As a physician, he had taken high rank.
Bright in mind, studios in habits, affable in manners, he was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.
The burial took place at Jackson on Sunday.

John Spence, a colored man of about fifty years of age, was killed by getting caught by a belt at Worrell & William's sawmill here yesterday afternoon.

Death of Mr. E. F. Lawrence
Mr. Edward F. Lawrence died at St. Vincent's Hospital in Norfolk, at 3:30 o'clock on the afternoon of the 20th inst., after an illness of two weeks, aged 36 years.
He was the youngest son of Mrs. H. P. Lawrence of this place and brother of Capt. L. C. and Mr. J. N. Lawrence.
He had been residing in Norfolk, since boyhood and for a number of years was bookkeeper for the firm of Vaughan & Barnes.
About a year ago, he went into the drug business, the firm name being Lawrence & Holmes, which was continued until his death.
His remains were brought here last Friday and interred at the Southall cemetery.
He was a member of the Methodist church. Kind in disposition, pleasant in manners, he had a large circle of friends[.]
He was full of push and energy and put his mind and heart into whatever he undertook to do and was succeeding well in business.

Mr. William Bryant died last week at his home in Maney's Neck, at an advanced age.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of this place.

A son of Mr. Andrew Bridgers, of near Creeksville, Northampton county, aged about 19 years died last Saturday with pneumonia.

Mr. Josiah Mizzell, aged about sixty-five, died at Colerain, on the 13th.
One week latter to the minute last Friday, his wife died.
On Sunday last Mr. Frank Wilson a merchant of the same place aged about 40 years died.
Messrs. Wilson and Mizzell were proprietors of the Colerain fishery.
Mr. John Wilson, of the same place, who was struck on the head recently by a negro is still in critical condition.

Thornton Hutchins, colored, died Tuesday, aged about sixty years.
He belonged to the late Dr. Hutchins during slavery.
He was a well-known hostler.
He always voted the Democratic ticket and was proud of his party.

Death of Mrs. Amanda Brett
Mrs. Amanda Brett, wife of the late Joseph Brett, died suddenly Sunday morning, aged eighty years, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. T. E. Vann, in Maney's Neck Township.
She leaves one daughter, Mrs. T. E. Vann.
She was an excellent lady, a pure Christian and had been a member of the Methodist church for many years.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon, conducted by Revs. W. E. Allen and C. W. Scarborough.
The interment was at the family burying ground.

She was a bright, pretty child and her death was a sad one.

Mrs. Bunch, wife of Mr. J. E. Bunch of Portsmouth, died in that city last week, aged 26 years.
She leaves three children one of which is an infant.

By the death of Maj. James L. Anderson, of Winton, Hertford county, loses one her best citizens.
Both as citizen and official, he was faithful to every duty.
He served as a member of the Board of County Commissioners for several terms and was twice elected to the legislature.
He leaves an estate estimated at about $40,000, which goes to his two sisters, Mrs. Faison, of Winton, and Mrs. Knox, of Tennessee.
He was never married.

Death of Miss Helen W. Scarborough
Miss Helen Waitt Scarborough, the only daughter of Rev. C. W. Scarborough, died last Saturday morning of typhoid fever, aged sixteen years.
The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church Sunday afternoon, and the burial was at the Riverside cemetery.
A large crowd was in attendance.
Rev. Samuel Saunders conducted the funeral services.
Helen was a bright young Christian, a fond daughter and sister, and king of disposition.
'Tis doubly sad for one so young, so bright, so promising to be taken away.
