House Burned With Child In It
- A Mother's Efforts to Save Her Child. -
About four o'clock on Thursday evening last, Mr. Jeptha Story, a farmer who lives about four miles from Murfreesboro, was at work in his field some distance from his dwelling house.
His wife had just gone over to a near neighbor's for something, and had left their youngest child in the house alone.
Flames were soon seen enveloping the entire house, and as the wind was very high, the tale of woe was at once foreseen.
Mr. Story and all the neighbors he could summons hastened to the burning house, but only in time to discover that the fire had already made such headway, that it was impossible even to rescue his favorite child from the flames.
At this stage, the poor distracted mother arrived, but only to hear the pitying cries of her dying child, and to see one piece of burning timbers, after another, fall upon its infant body.
Almost superhuman efforts, one after another, were made by the poor mother to save her child, and had it not been for the strong hands of the bystanders, she would probably have shared the same fate.
The scene was heart rending and may better be imagined than described.
The loss was a complete one.
The house and its entire contents were destroyed with no insurance upon it; and what was a far greater loss to the unfortunate parents was that of their favorite child.
The origin of the fire is unknown, but is supposed to have occurred from sparks from the chimney.
The sympathies of the entire community are with the unfortunate and bereaved family.
