Janice M. White Askew
ASHFORD. Ct.- Janice M. White Askew, 69, a native of Bertie County, died April 11, 2002 at Hartford Hospital.
Askew was a custodian at the University of Connecticut and a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Tommie Ray Askew of Ashford, Ct; two brothers, George Lee White of New London, Ct. and William White of Ahoskie; one sister, Mary Lee Waiter of New London, Ct. and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. April 20, 2002 at Piney Wood Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Morris Family Cemetery.
Hunter Funeral Home of Ahoskie and Dolittle Funeral Home of Middletown, Ct. are handling arrangements.
Beatrice Riddick
BRONX, NY - Beatrice Riddick died April 12, 2002 at Kings Harbor Nursing Home.
Survivors include two brothers, Melvin Dudley, Sr. of Ahoskie and Roy Dudley of Brooklyn, NY; two sisters, Mary Earl Dudley of Windsor and Fannie Cherry of Ahoskie.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon, April 20, 2002 at Conconary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. C.C. Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in the Dudley Family Cemetery.
Hunter Funeral Home of Ahoskie is handling arrangements.
JoAnn L. Woodall
CHESAPEAKE, Va - JoAnn Lowers Woodall, 68, died April 14, 2002.
Survivors include four daughters, Linda Hill, Laura Hall of Murfreesboro, Lorraine Johnson and Loretta Wesson; a son, Jimmy King; two step-children, Lisa Hudson, Johnny Woodall; one sister, Barbara George; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. The family suggests memorial to Bon Secours Hospice at Maryview. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel is handling arrangements.
Annie Tyler
LEWISTON - Annie Tyler, 72, died April 4, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor.
Christine Squire
ROANOKE RAPIDS - Christine Squire, 66, died April 6, 2002, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Deliverance, Weldon, by Pastor William Cheek. Interment will be in the Moody Cemetery, Gaston. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.
Mildred A. Hinton
KELFORD - Mildred Avery Hinton, 53, a native of Hertford County, died April 7, 2002, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by Elder Claude Daughety. Burial will be in the Wilder Cherry family cemetery.
Mrs. Hinton was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, James Avery of Kelford; two sisters, Charlotte Couell of Cove City and Patricia Moon of Baltimore, Md.; and three grandchildren.
Willie M. Simpson
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Willie Mae Simpson, 76, a native of Aulander, died April 5, 2002, in Maryview Medical Center.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Emanuel AME Church by the Rev. Charles Harven. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Corprew Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Simpson retired as a nurse from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York after 29 years. She was a member of Macedonia AME Church, Suffolk.
Survivors include her husband, Arlington H. Simpson; and three sisters, Virginia Williams, Flossie Overton and Maritana Beale, all of Suffolk.
Stanley Hughes Sr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Stanley Eugene Hughes Sr., 79, a native of Portsmouth, died April 7, 2002, in a Portsmouth hospital. He was the widower or Alma G. Hughes.
A graveside service was conducted Wednesday at Olive Branch Cemetery with military honors. Sturtevant Funeral Home was in charge.
Hughes retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of Portsmouth DAV Chapter 22 and VFW.
Survivors includes four daughters, Linda Fulmer of Virginia Beach, Sandra Duncan of Moyock, April Hughes of Windsor, Va., and Bambi Bennett of Gates County; a son, Stanley E. Hughes Jr. of Williamsburg; a brother, Arthur A. Hughes of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Kathryn M. Bunch
EDENTON - Kathryn Michelle "Kathy" Bunch, 21, died April 7, 2002.
A graveside service was conducted Wednesday at Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Evans Funerals and Cremations was in charge.

AHOSKIE - Zelda Newsome, a native of Bertie County, died April 4, 2002, at PCMH, Greenville.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerryl Moody. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.
Mrs. Newsome was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Willie Newsome; five sons, Burnice J. Newsome of Winton, Arnold E. Newsome of Murfreesboro, Clayton A. Newsome of Bridgeport, Conn., Derwin E. Newsome of Temple, Texas and Corey M. Newsome of Ahoskie; five daughters, Malinda Newsome Carmon of Greensboro, Carolyn N. Kerris of Winston-Salem, Cathlin N. Person of Norfolk, Va., Vickie Arnold-Williams of Prince George and Alecia N. Gatling of Ahoskie; her mother, Emma Ruffin of Ahoskie; three brothers, Leon Ruffin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gregory Ruffin of Smithfield and Willie Pugh of Ahoskie; one sister, Evelyn Jordan of Greensboro 26 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
