Thelma B. Brown
WOODLAND - Thelma Burden Brown, 67, died April 10, 2002, at RCH, Ahoskie.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert May. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include her husband, Johnny Lynn Brown; two daughters, Donna Lee Lineburger of Tarboro and Donna Lynn Brown of Rich Square; one son, Charles Lineburger of Harrellsville; one sister, Eula Mae Britton of Ahoskie; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
George L. Bynum
CAMDEN, N.J. - George Lee Bynum, a native of Hertford County, died April 6, 2002, at Cooper Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Porter. Burial will be in the Whitley family cemetery, Como. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, June B. Bynum of Long Branch; children, Christopher L. Bynum and Connie B. Vaughan, both of Lakewood, Joshua Bynum and Lynette Shaw, both of Camden, Regina B. Dixon of Richmond, Va., Linda Brown and Renee Brown, both of Petersburg; sisters and brothers, Webster Bynum and Nell Everette, both of Long Branch, Bradford Bynum, Bertha Cooper, Magaline Batton and Virginia Bynum, all of Como; and five grandchildren.
Dorothy J. Williams
EURE - Dorothy Jean Williams, 68, died April 6, 2002, at RCH, Ahoskie.
A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Bethel Cemetery. Wilkerson Funeral Home was in charge.
Miss Williams worked at Edgecombe General Hospital, Tarboro and at the hospital in Chico, Calif., for a number of years.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
Lily B. Humphrey
FORT WORTH, Texas - Lily Belle Humphrey, 77, a native of Norfolk, Va., died April 5, 2002. She was the widow of H.E. Humphrey Sr.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mount Olivet Funeral Home, Fort Worth, is in charge.
Mrs. Humphrey was a member of James Avenue Baptist Church, a member of North Carolina Genealogical Society, Gates County, Historical Society, Norfolk Virginia Historical Society and the Family Research Society of Northeastern North Carolina.
Survivors include her sons, H.E. "Skip" Humphrey Jr. and Mike Humphrey; daughters, Monte Thompson and Donna Donnell; a brother, Claud J. Deans Jr. of Norfolk; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Sue M. LaSonde
NORFOLK, Va. - Sue M. LaSonde, 91, a native of Bertie County, died April 6, 2002. She was the widow of Thomas Kiff and Albert Adrien LaSonde.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, by Pastor Robert Hobson. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery, Sunbury. Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to Eastminister Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. LaSonde retired as a floral designer, having worked for Kiff Florist, Parker Florist, Hopewells Florist and Pinners Florist for more than 50 years. She was a member of Eastminister Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jo Kiff Eason of Norfolk; a son, Michael LaSonde of Bedford, N.H.; a brother, Dr. J.P. Freeman of Raleigh; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Wheeler M. Manning
WILLIAMSTON - Wheeler Martin Manning, 87, a native of Martin County, died April 4, 2002, at MGH, Williamston.
A funeral was conducted Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Biggs Funeral Home was in charge.
Manning established Wheeler Manning Insurance Agency. He was also on the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church where he was a member.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel E. Wynn Manning; two daughters, Mary Evelyn Manning Sparrow of Columbia, S.C., and Jane Martin Manning of Nags Head; two stepdaughters, Beverly Harrington of Ahoskie and Joan James of Robersonville; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Marie N. Bryant
AHOSKIE - Marie Newsome Bryant, a native of Hertford County, died April 5, 2002, at RCH, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church Union by the Rev. Lebron Britt. Burial will be in the Newsome family Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Mrs. Bryant was a member of Second Baptist Church Union.
Survivors include five daughters, June Bryant, Marie Banks, Pearline Brown and Agnes Freeman, all of Ahoskie, Annie Tann of New Hill; one sister, Mildred Morton of Ahoskie; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Keshone Pugh
WINDSOR - Keshone Pugh, a native of Bertie County, died April 6, 2002, at DUH, Durham.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Thomas Lee. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents, Sherman and Shavonda Pugh of Windsor; and one brother, Kendre Pugh, also of Windsor.
James E. Brown
LEWISTON - James Edward Brown, 82, a native of Pasquotank County, died April 5, 2002, at RCH, Ahoskie.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Weeping Mary Church Cemetery, Hwy. 11, by the Rev. Billy Cherry. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cherry’s Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor.
Bertha S. Costen
SUNBURY - Bertha Sue Costen, 86, a native of Gates County, died April 7, 2002, at Winslow Memorial Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John AME Zion by Pastor Willie A. Littlejohn. Entombment will be in St. Johns Drake Memorial Cemetery, Sunbury. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Everett Russell Costen; a daughter, Felicia A. Baker of Bridgeport, Conn.; one sister, Catherine Hoffler of Sunbury; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Roy S. Melton
RICH-SQUARE- Roy S. Melton, 64, died March 24, 2002 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Bertie County and a member of New Holley Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Susie D. Melton; two sons, Ronald and Reginald Melton, both of Philadelphia, PA; four daughters, Cynthia Melton of Philadelphia, PA, Tammy M. Coleman of Jacksonville, FL, Miriam M. Morgan of Durham, and Sharon Rankins of Potomac, VA; three brothers, Thomas Melton of Maryland, Ray Melton of Whitesville and Leon Melton of Ahoskie; four sisters, Jeanette Hawkins and Mildred Campbell, both of Philadelphia, PA, Bessie Jenkins and Rosalee Terry, both of Ahoskie; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on March 30 at 11 a.m. in New Holley Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Duke Family Cemetery. A wake will be held on Friday from 7-8 p.m. at Wilder’s Chapel. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is handling arrangements.
