Annie G. Harrell
CHESAPEAKE, VA - Annie Gertrude Harrell, a native of Bertie County, died March 23, 2002 in her home in Chesapeake, Va.
A graveside service was conducted at 1 p.m. March 25, 2002 in Sunnyside Cemetery, Scotland Neck. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home is in charge of services.
Survivors include a daughter, Loretta "Tenny" Garner of Eagle Springs; a son, Larry D. Harrell of Chesapeake, Va; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Eugene S. Stone
ROCKY MOUNT - Eugene Spencer Stone, 67, a native of Nash County, died Mar. 18, 2002, at Duke Medical Center.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Middlesex Church of God Family Life Center. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Middlesex Church of God Building Fund, 5407 S. NC 231, Middlesex, NC, 27557. Strickland Funeral Home, Wendell, is in charge.
Stone was a retired CPA and an U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Hunter Stone; daughters, Gina S. Rascoe of Windsor and Jennifer S. Sears of Rocky Mount; a son, Bryan H. Stone of Rocky Mount; stepmother, Thelma Stone of Middlesex; 13 sisters; 11 brothers; and four grandchildren.
Willie Watson
WINDSOR - Mrs. Willie Watson, 99, a native of Bertie County, died March 16, 2002, at RCH. She was the widow of Teatler Watson.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. James E. Jones Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Cherry’s Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Watson was a retired farmer and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Emily Watson Clark; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
Alease R. Howell
SUFFOLK, Va. - Alease Russell Howell, 87, a native of Gates County, died March 18, 2002, at Nansemond Pointe Healthcare. She was the widow of William Carroll Howell.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Byron McCreary. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 138 Beechwood Drive. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Christian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1736, Suffolk, Va. 23439.
Mrs. Howell was a member of Trinity Christian Church and former president of Trinity Ladies Auxiliary. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Howell Peace of Suffolk; a son, Donald H. Howell of Bohannon; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Norman S. Cherry
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Norman S. Cherry, 83, a native of Windsor, died March 18, 2002, at Beverly Manor of Portsmouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Baptist Missionary Church, Suffolk, by Bishop C.V. Russell Sr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.
Cherry was a retired towman of Norfolk Naval Air Station after 32 years of service. He was a member of Union Baptist Missionary Church, Suffolk, and Cavalier Manor P.C.R.
Survivors include his wife, Algie W. Cherry; two sons, Norman M. Cherry of Lewiston and William L. Cherry of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Advert Stancil
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Advert Stancil, 77, a native of Severn, died March 15, 2002, at Maryview Medical Center.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Steele-Bullock Funeral Home by the Rev. Leon Boone. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Stancil was a member of the Nation of Islam and was a mixer operator for the United States Gypsum Co.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Stancil; a daughter, Sheila Stancil; two sons, Bobby Stancil and Larry Stancil; two sisters, Doris Joyner and Elsie Rodgers; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Areather H. Wilson
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Areather Hicks Wilson, a native of Ahoskie, died March 15, 2002. She was the widow of George E. Wilson.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. George Hicks and the Rev. Samuel P. Sykes. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory Friday from 6 to 7 p.m.
The family will receive guests following the burial service in the reception hall of the funeral home.
Mrs. Wilson was a retired childcare provider and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Travis, Phyllis Scott, Judy Cooper and Arlene Wilson; four sons, George "Wilbert" Wilson, Paul Wilson, Oliver Wilson and Richard Spruill; a sister, Ivennia H. Ennis; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Bernice R. Duke
NEWSOMS, Va. - Bernice Ricks Duke, 87, a native of Northampton County, died March 18, 2002, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Robert L. Duke Sr.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Newsoms United Methodist Church by Dr. Gary Hartman.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to the church.
The family will be at the church one hour prior to services to receive friends. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge.
Mrs. Duke was a retired teacher and a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church where she served as pianist. She taught school in Louisburg, Conway, Winston-Salem, Murfreesboro, Boykins and Franklin.
Survivors include a sister, Louise Barrett of Littleton; and two granddaughters.
Catherine Spruill
SUFFOLK, Va. - Catherine "Mading" Spruill, 83, a native of Bertie County, died March 16, 2002, in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Metropolitan Baptist Church, Suffolk, by Dr. Robert Hobbs. Interment was in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, was in charge.
Mrs. Spruill retired from Planter’s Peanut Company. She was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church where she was an usher.
Survivors include one daughter, Margie Iverson of Suffolk; a stepdaughter, Shirley Boone of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
John L. Bass
SUNBURY - John Linwood Bass, 84, died March 17, 2002.
A celebration of life service was conducted Wednesday at Sandy Cross Baptist Church. Evans Funerals and Cremations of Edenton was in charge.
