Oscar L. Bazemore
WINDSOR - Oscar Luder Bazemore, 89, died March 14, 2002.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. Manson Mortuary is in charge.
Bazemore was a retired farmer. He was a member of Olive Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Clifton Bazemore of Windsor; a daughter, Barbara G. Bazemore of New York; brothers, George L. Bazemore of Portsmouth and Henry J. Freeman of Windsor; and sisters, Thelma Smallwood and Nelphia Bazemore of Windsor and Emeline Manson of Williamston.
Hattie S. Stephenson
MURFREESBORO - Hattie Spruill Stephenson, a native of Hertford County, died March 17, 2002, at RCH.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Mrs. Stephenson was a member of First Baptist Church Murfreesboro and a Sunday school teacher and senior choir.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin Spruill of Murfreesboro and William Elliott Stephenson of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Denise Stephenson Hawk of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a great-great-grandchild.
Martavious Everette
MURFREESBORO - Martavious Everette, 6, died March 18, 2002, at King’s Daughters Children’s Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro, is in charge.
Bessie Wood
AHOSKIE - Bessie Wood, died March 20, 2002, at RCH.

Carl H. Jones
GATESVILLE - Carl Hayes Jones, 70, a native of Gates County, died March 17, 2002, at Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the services. Burial will be in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.
Jones had retired from Carolina Aluminum in Winton.
Survivors include four sisters, Lillian "Kitty" Greene of Eure, Mary Ann Parker of Chesapeake, Helen Raynor of Wake Forest and Rosa Mae Byrum of Edenton.
Jerry L. Ward Sr.
SUFFOLK, Va. - Jerry Lee Ward Sr., 56, a native of Suffolk, died March 14, 2002, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Chapel of Harrell and Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert F. Cofield. Interment was in the Ward family cemetery, Gates County.
Ward retired after 32 years as a sign fabricator for Virginia Department of Transportation and was a U.S Army veteran during Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda V. Ward; a son, Jerry L. Ward Jr. of Suffolk; and two grandchildren.
William H. Sutton
NORFOLK, Va. - William Henry Sutton, 93, a native of Windsor, died March 11, 2002, at DePaul Medical Center.
A homegoing service was conducted Monday at C.H. Mason Memorial COGIC by the Revs. David B. Williams and Joseph L. Williams. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Riddick Funeral Service was in charge.
Sutton retired from Norfolk Naval Supply after 27 years. He was a member and deacon of Refuge Church of God in Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Lenora W. Sutton; a brother, Elder Lonnie Sutton; two sisters, Rosa Whitley and Pearl Askew; five stepchildren, Yvonne Neely, Brenda Neely, Thomasine N. Chandler, Darrell Neely and Howard Neely; and a foster son, Joseph Pascucci.
Hazel R. Locke
DURHAM - Hazel Reid Locke, 87, a native of Gates County, died March 15, 2002, at her residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Brown. Burial will be in the Locke family cemetery, Gatesville. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include children, William J. Locke of Baltimore, Md., Ivey R. Locke of Gatesville, Allen L. Locke of Chapel Hill and Violet L. Harrington of Durham; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

BRONX, N.Y. - Doris Watson Alexander, a native of Bertie County, died March 14, 2002, at Montefiore Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. James R. Wiggins. Burial will be in the Wilder family cemetery, Windsor.
Survivors include three sons, Ernest Wesley Alexander of Tuckahoe, Lawrence Alexander and Gregory Alexander, both of Bronx; two daughters, Trussie Alexander and Dorcella Alexander, both of Bronx; two adopted daughters, Linda and Antionette, both of Bronx; three brothers, Admiral Glenn, Paul Glenn and Gene Glenn; one sister, Lillian Glenn; and eight grandchildren.
