Luther Joyner Daughtry
SOUTH MILLS - Luther Joyner Daughtry, 58, a native of Lasker, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital in Norfolk, Va. Mr. Daughtry was the son of the late Luther S. Daughtry and Lois Jenkins Daughtry. He graduated from N.C. State in 1966 and then attended the Officers Candidate School where he served in the Navy for four years as an officer. He was employed with the Albemarle Regional Health Service as an environmental health service inspector.
Survivors include his sisters, Anne D. Hicks of El Paso, Texas and Gloria D. Payne of Maryville, Tenn.; three step-children, Greg Lane of St. Louis, Missouri, Elizabeth Slutzky of St. Louis, Missouri and Sgt. Matthew Lane, Bravo Company 3rd 229th Aviation, Fort Bragg; his stepmother, Frances D. Daughtry of Lasker and a stepbrother, Fred Liverman of Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral Services were held Monday, March 4, 2002 at 4 p.m. at Lasker Baptist Church by Rev. Joe Mclean. Burial followed at Lasker Cemetery.
The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson on Sunday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
Ernest Leon White
SCOTLAND NECK - Ernest Leon White, 73, a native of Bertie County, died February 27, 2002 in Community Hospital.
Survivors include one brother, Pete White of Chesapeake, Va. and one sister, Rosebud Moore of Colerain.
A chapel service was held Monday, March 4 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carlton white delivering the eulogy.
Services of comfort were entrusted to Hertford County Undertakers.
Phonie Mayce White
CHESAPEAKE, VA. - Phonie Mayce White, 51, a native of Gates County, died February 28, 2002 at Chesapeake General Hospital.
Survivors include her spouse, James White Sr. and two sons, Gregory M. White and James White, Jr., both of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, Bryan L. Eason of Virginia Beach, Va. and two sisters, Carliminta Jordan of Virginia Beach, Va. and Lernette Wolfrey of Sunbury.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at St. John AME Church with Pastor Littlejohn delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Drake Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the chapel.
Garvin Glenn Todd
COLERAIN - Garvin Glenn Todd, 85, of 2933 Wakelon Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002 in the Durham VA Hospital. A native of Bertie County, he was a member of Perrytown Assembly of God Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Todd served in the Army in WWII and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 3, 2002 at the Perrytown Assembly of God by the Rev. David Baker and the Rev. Randy Pierce. Burial followed in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey Hoggard Todd of Colerain; one daughter, Marilyn T. Bateman of Ayden; three sons, Greg Todd of Tarboro, Jeff Todd of Oak Island, and Keith Todd of Winston Salem; three sisters, Reece T. Jordan of Portsmouth, Va., Myrtle White of Windsor and Icie T. Myers of Colerain; two brothers, Archie Todd and Blackston Todd, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Perrytown Assembly of God, 928 Perrytown Road, Colerain, NC, 27932.
Elsie Bottoms
MURFREESBORO - Elsie Bottoms died Sunday, March 3, 2002 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, will be handling the arrangements.
Benjamin F. Carter
EURE - Benjamin Franklin "Dick" Carter, 87, of Taylor Mill Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002 in Louise Obici memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Edith Carter; his son, Richard S. Carter and numerous grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Eure Christian Church. Burial will follow with full Masonic rites at 2:30 p.m. in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
Kenneth A Poreda
EURE - Kenneth A. Poreda, 61, of Little Island Road died March 1, 2002.

Francis Gillam, Jr.
WINDSOR - Francis Gillam, Jr., 82, of 203 South King Street, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 in Pitt Memorial Hospital. A native of Bertie County and a World War II veteran, he was also a longtime member of Cashie Baptist Church.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6 in Cashie Baptist Churchyard.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Rascoe Gillam of Windsor; a daughter, Pat Gillam Ivey of Windsor and one grandson.
The family will receive friends from their home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Mr. Gillam’s name may be made to the Cashie Baptist Church memorial Fund, 221 S. McClary Hall, Sr.
AHOSKIE - McClary Hall Sr., 83, departed this life March 1, 2002.
A funeral will be conducted on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Pearl Hall; nine children, Laverne Toliver, Elsie Powell, McClary Hall, Jr., Rickey Hall, Terry Hall and Donna Hall of Ahoskie, Maxine Dowe of Springfield, Va., Karen Ingram of Manassas, Va., and Portia Walls of Cary; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Donia Weaver and Elizabeth Howard of Ahoskie.
Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Moore
DEPTFORD, N.J. - Ruth Moore, 64, a native of Hertford County, died Feb. 20, 2002.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Robert Moore Jr.; one son, Robert Moore III of the home; two daughters, Marion Johnson of Bowie, Md. and Joyce D. Moore of the home; six sisters, Reaver Miner and Emma Miller of Richmond, Va., Lalar Johnson of Ahoskie, Sharon Finney of Woodsbury, Arie Beatrice Savage and Essie Gibbs, both of Norfolk; five brothers, James Johnson Jr., Willie Johnson and Calton Johnson, all of Harrellsville, Incademus Johnson of Norfolk and Larry Johnson of Woodsbury; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Rebecca J. Taylor
GATESVILLE - Rebecca Johnston Taylor, a native of Warren County, died Feb. 23, 2002, in her home. She was the widow of Willis Perkins Taylor Jr.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Jim McGee. Burial will be in Gatesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Gatesville, NC, 27938, or to University Hospice, Ahoskie, NC, 27910. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Mrs. Taylor had retired from the Selective Service Board and the FHA Office in Winton and was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca J. Taylor of Suffolk and Olivia Stevens Kleinmaier of Winston-Salem; a son, W.P. "Perky" Taylor III of Suffolk; and six grandchildren.
