Ruth S. Murphy
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Ruth Stephens Murphy, 63, a native of Como, died Feb. 20, 2002.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake by the Rev. Wade T. Blount and the Rev. Stephan Adams.
Immediately following the services, interment will take place in Shiloh Baptist Church in Boykins.
Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge.
Mrs. Murphy retired from Bradlees in 1996 as a retail store manager and was a member of Union Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Lonnie C. Murphy; a son, Joel H. Murphy of Riverside, Calif.; a daughter, Valerie Y. Murphy of Chesapeake; four brothers, Herman Lee Stephens of Issue, Md., Otis W. Bishop of Detroit, Mich., Clarence Bishop and John F. Bishop, both of Dayton, Ohio; and four sisters, Joyce Davis, Mozella Saleem, Betty J. Bishop and Claudia Bishop, all of Detroit.
Jordan N. Hale
GATES - Jordan Nicole Hale, was stillborn, died Feb. 20, 2002, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Private services have been held.
Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.
Survivors include her parents, Danny Ray and Vicki Bynum Hale; maternal grandparents, Betty Jo and Jimmy Umphlett of Gates; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Patty Hale of Corapeake; and maternal great-grandmother, Sally Savage of Gates.
Annis Pugh
LEWISTON - Annis Pugh, 98, died Feb. 17, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Springhill Baptist Church.
Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.
Katherine E. Riddick
HOBBSVILLE - Katherine Eason Riddick, 88, a native of Perquimans County, died Feb. 22, 2002, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
She was the widow of Lonnie N. Riddick.
A graveside service was conducted Sunday at the Riddick family cemetery by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.
The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions in her memory be made to the Sandy Cross Baptist Church Parking Lot Fund, c/o Leslie Byrum, 943 Acorn Hill Road, Hobbsville, NC, 27946.
Mrs. Riddick was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Lawrence G. Riddick of Hobbsville and Clarence Riddick of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Jessie Ray Worrell of Washington; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
Katie B. Valentine
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Katie B. Valentine, 98, died Feb. 19, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Saturday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Jackson.
Coleman Funeral Home was in charge.
Marie G. Johnson
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Marie Gatling Johnson, 91, a native of Roduco, died Feb. 19, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Celestial Baptist Church by the Rev. Leon Boone.
Burial was in Lincoln Cemetery. Steele-Bullock Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Celestial Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Georgie Chavis of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
Ruby O. Murphy
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Ruby O. Murphy, 74, a native of Bertie County, died Feb. 22, 2002, in her home.
She was the widow of George Franklin Murphy.
A graveside service was conducted Monday in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Johnny McDonald.
Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, was in charge.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513.
Survivors include a son, Danny L. Murphy of Chesapeake; a daughter, Diana Edwards Ashburn of Richmond; three sisters, Christine Asbell of Ahoskie, Fannie Brill of Staunton and Bessie Knapp of Herb, Ark.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Jane L. Jones
JACKSON - Jane L. Jones, 63, died Feb. 22, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Jackson United Methodist Church.
Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.
Memorial donations may be made to Jackson United Methodist Church or to the Jackson Rescue Squad.
Miss Jones was retired from the FBI after 38 years of service.
She was a member of Jackson United Methodist Church.
Towanda P. Watson
WINDSOR - Towanda Lanette Parker, 27, a native of Baltimore, Md., died Feb. 19, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Saturday at Sandy Point Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry L. Parker.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Cherry’s Funeral Home was in charge.
Survivors include a son, Antwione Avery Brown of Baltimore; her mother, Celeste Parker of Tarboro; her father and stepmother, the Rev. Jerry L. Parker and Mary Parker of Joppa; a brother, Avery Terrell Simmons of Tarboro; two sisters, Tonita P. Jones of Windsor and Tyra Parker of Baltimore; and a grandmother, Cora L. Parker of Windsor.
Willie M. Nash
SUFFOLK, Va. - Willie Mae Futrell Nash, a native of Woodland, died Feb. 3, 2002, at the home of her son.
She was the widow of James E. Nash.
A graveside funeral was conducted Wednesday at Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. J. Robert Bennett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Berea Congregational Christian Church, Suffolk, or to Bennett's Creek Rescue Squad.
Mrs. Nash was a homemaker.
She was a member of Berea Congregational Christian Church, where she was a former member of the Women’s Fellowship and also a member of the Chapter 270 OES of South Mills.
Survivors include a son, James E. Nash of Ivor; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
