Ruby R. Hobbs
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Ruby Rice Hobbs, a native of Sunbury, died Jan. 21, 2002. She was the widow of Noel M. Hobbs.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at South Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Hughs and Dr. A. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to South Norfolk Baptist Church Renovation Fund or Comfort Care Hospice, 667 Kingsborough Square No. 202, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
Mrs. Hobbs was a retired homemaker/seamstress. She was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Anita Matteson of Virginia Beach, Dorothy Hackworth and Christine Ussery, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Edna R. Hoffler of Sunbury; a brother, Frank L. Rice of Sunbury; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Wanda G. Edwards
FRANKLIN, Va. - Wanda Jean Griffin Edwards, 68, a native of Boykins, died Jan. 21, 2002.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Richard Binderup and the Rev. Charles Chappell. Burial was in Poplar Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Franklin Congregational Christian Church building fund or the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Edwards had taught nursing at Chowan College and was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert R. "Bobby" Edwards; a daughter, Deborah E. Jenkins; a son, "Bruce" Edwards; a brother, T.R. Griffin; and four grandchildren.
Phyllis Thompson
LEWISTON - Phyllis Thompson, a native of Bertie County, died Jan. 20, 2002, at her residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church by the rev. James R. Wiggins. Burial will be in Weeping Mary Church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
She was a member of Beautiful Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Archie Thompson of Fayetteville; three daughters, Loretta Thompson and Delila Thompson, both of Lewiston and Tanique Thompson of Philadelphia, Pa.; one goddaughter, Janice Person of Hamilton; her mother, Pauline Thompson of Lewiston; six brothers, Jimmy Thompson of Lewiston, Melvin Thompson of Washington, D.C., Daniel Thompson, Samuel Thompson and Leroy Thompson, all of Philadelphia and Morris Thompson of Preston, N.J.; two sisters, Armazie Thompson of Lewiston and Jeanette Ruffin of Rich Square; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Woodrow Smith
HARRELLSVILLE - Woodrow Smith, a native of Hertford County, died Jan. 19, 2002, at Guardian Care of Scotland Neck.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reynolds Funeral Home chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. James R. Wiggins. Burial will be in New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Smith was a member of New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church.
Lucille Hoggard Bland
Mrs. Lucille Hoggard Bland, age 81, died at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice Center in Greenville on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.
Mrs. Bland was a native of Bertie County and the daughter of the late Atha Jane Harrison Hoggard and William Roy Hoggard. She was married to the late Joseph Delbert Bland, Sr. and to this marriage was born five children.
Mrs. Bland was devoted to her family working in the home as a homemaker and raising children. She enjoyed working outside and flower gardening.
Also preceding her in death is a son, William Thad Bland; one sister, Joyce Byrum; and two brothers, James and Walter Hoggard.
Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Bland Williford and her husband, Clint III, of Aulander; three sons, Jr. Bland and Kenneth Bland and his wife, Jane, all of Aulander, and Richard Bland and his wife, Debbie, of Murfreesboro; four sisters, Irene Bryant of Ahoskie, Betty Ruth Cloe of Woodland, Gayle Harris and her husband, Richard, of Colerain, and Patsy Conner and husband, Eddie, of Windsor; and one brother, Steve Hoggard of Winton. Grandchildren surviving are Ronnie Bland and his wife, Robin, of Aulander, Brian Bland and his wife, Lisa, of Ahoskie, Wanda Case and her husband, Mike, of Farmville, Keith Bland and his wife, Jenny, of Ahoskie, B.J. Bland of Murfreesboro, David Bland of Walstonburg, and Clint Williford IV and his wife, Abby, of Aulander. Great grandchildren surviving are Christian Bland, Harley Danielle Bland, Brian Corey Bland, Courtney Case and fiancé Ethan Nichols, Michael Case, Brandon Corey Bland, Caleb Bland and Gracie Williford.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie with the Rev. Greg Hurdle and the Rev. Marie Jones officiating. The interment will follow at the Hall-Rogerson Cemetery in Aulander.
The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

MANHATTEN, N.Y. - Elise D. Boone, 46, died Jan. 16, 2002.
A graveside service will be conducted Thursday in the Boone family cemetery, Saunders Rd., Gates, by the Rev. Reid.

Maxine D. Mizelle
WINDSOR - Maxine Dunlow Mizelle, 55, a native of Bertie County, died Jan. 11, 2002, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
A funeral was conducted Sunday at Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. Freddie Harris and the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr.
Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery.
Mrs. Mizelle was a retired self-employed beautician and a member of Askewville Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Wendy Ambrose of Harrellsville; a son, Jay Todd of Ahoskie; a sister, Anna Spain of Chesapeake, Va.; and a grandchild.
Jerry Stevenson
NORFOLK, Va. - Jerry Stevenson, 62, a native of Northampton County, died Jan. 8, 2002, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Macedonia AME Church by the Rev. Freda Huntley.
Burial was in the Stevenson family cemetery.
Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Long Stevenson of Norfolk; children, James T. Branch Bey of Syracuse, N.Y. and Rick Myers of Rich Square; sisters and brothers, the Rev. Joe Stevenson of Disputanta, Eula Mae Lee of Pendleton and Bessie Parks of Murfreesboro; and four grandchildren.
Freenie Boone
SUFFOLK, Va. - Freenie Boone, a native of Gates, died Jan. 11, 2002, at Nansemond Point Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Corinthy Chapel UCC by the Rev. George L. Smith.
Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park.
Gates County Community Funeral Home is in charge.
Boone was a retired self-employed painter.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Suffolk.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah E. Spruill Boone; two daughters, Linda Jean Wiggins of Suffolk and Brenda Ann Lee of Whaleyville; two sons, Jesse Lynn Boone of Portsmouth and Michael Anthony Boone; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
