George E. Hill
GATES - George E. "Curly" Hill, 74, a native of New Berlin, Ill., died Jan. 10, 2002, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
A private prayer service was held Saturday in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.
Hill retired from Fiat-Allis Corp., as a plant superintendent after 37 years of employment. He was an Army veteran of WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Reed Hill; two daughters, Barb Baldwin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Betsy Rowsey of Gates; two sons, Darrell Hill of Freeport and David Hill of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters, Glida Tate, Roberta Hill, Bettie Ritchart, all of Springfield and Effie Hamilton of Phoenix; four brothers, Joseph Hill of Imperial Beach, Calif., James Hill of Kansas City, Paul Hill of Springfield and Robert Hill of Collinsville; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Harry L. Snyder
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Harry Loeb Snyder, a native of Norfolk, died Jan. 10, 2002.
A chapel service was conducted Sunday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. By Rabbi Lawrence Forman. Burial was in Princess Anne Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA.
Snyder was a businessman for sales and finance. He was an Army veteran and served on many boards.
Survivors include his wife, Legare Wilroy Snyder of Ahoskie; a sister, Elisa Banks Silver; a brother, Edward B. Synder; and six grandchildren.
Ruth Lucas
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Ruth Lucas, 76, a native of Como, died Jan. 9, 2002, at Maryview Medical Center. She was the widow of James T. Lucas.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. William S. Hampton. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Fisher Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Lucas retired after 25 years as a dietician from Portsmouth General Hospital. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, the founder of A.S. Hoard Steering Committee and a member of Eastern Star.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Callie G. Wood
WELDON - Callie Grant Wood, 88, died Jan. 13, 2002, at her home. She was the widow of James A. Wood.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Wood Cemetery, Weldon, by the Rev. Wayne Martin. The family will receive friends at the home in Weldon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Home Health Hospice, Roanoke Rapids, NC, 27870. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.
Mrs. Wood was a member of Weldon Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy W. Goodman of Longview, Wash., and Katherine Hunter of Weldon; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Shirley Eure
GATES - Shirley Eure, 64, a native of Gates, died Jan. 10, 2002, at his residence.
A funeral will be conducted Tuesday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church, Gates. Burial will be in the Cross family cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Eure was a mechanic with Norfolk Naval Yard and a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Leebell Eure of Gates; four sons, Preston T. Eure, Andrea Eure and Christopher A. Eure, all of Gates and Willis E. Moody of Franklin, Va.; a daughter, Shirley Mae White of Suffolk; his mother, Elzaner Eure of Gates; and one brother, Charlie Eure of Roduco.
James Raynor
COLERAIN - James Raynor, a native of Bertie County, died Jan. 12, 2002, at PCMH, Greenville.
A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wynn's Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. D.L. Morris. Burial will be in the Morris family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Janice T. Raynor; five sons, Jeryl Raynor and Julian Raynor, both of Colerain, Jarvis Raynor of Stafford, Va., James Raynor of Fayetteville, Jeffrey Raynor of Butner and Freddie Tann of Lewiston; two daughters, Julia Warren of Cameron and Janine R. Moore of Colerain; five sisters, Mary A. Speller of Ahoskie, Lula Miller, Frances Holley and Essie M. Raynor, all of Colerain and Hattie Brown of Portsmouth; 25 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Mattie H. Holloman
KINSTON - Mattie Hasty Holloman, 91, a native of Northampton County, and former resident of Mechanicsville, Va., died Jan. 9, 2002, in Kinston.
A funeral was conducted Friday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Entombment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Forrest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church or to the charity of one's choice. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.
Survivors include her husband, Wilmer Clyde Holloman; her daughters, Edith H. Drewett of Seaboard and Evelyn Lorene Harring of LaGrange; her sons, Bill Holloman Jr. of Midlothian, Jerry L. Holloman and Edward Eugene Holloman of Raleigh; a sister, Mary Hasty Grosso of Ormand Beach, Fla; a brother, the Rev. Dr. W.W. Hasty of Naples and Richmond; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Early W. Cofield
MERRY HILL - Early W. Cofield, a native of Bertie County, died Jan. 5, 2002, at RCH, Ahoskie.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oxley Hill Baptist Church, Merry Hill, by the Rev. Vonner Horton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include one sons, Early W. Cofield Jr. of Heightsville, Md.; one foster son, Michael Welch of Newport News, Va., two stepsons, Roger Askew of Colerain and Anthony Askew of Charlotte; six daughters, Christana Holley of Colerain, Vivian Holley of Nassau, Ariz., Daisy Spivey of Cantonville, Gwendolyn Jackson and Sharon Slade, both of Colerain and Shelda Askew of Merry Hill; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Benjaman Walker Jr.
ZUNI - Benjamin Walker Jr., 85, a native of Hertford County, died Jan. 6, 2002, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Friday at New Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank L. Aikens Sr. Interment was in Chapel Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home was in charge.
Walker retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 30 years of service. He was a member of New Branch Baptist Church.
Survivors include two nieces and nephews.
George Wesson
WINDSOR - George Wesson, died Jan. 7, 2002.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Point Baptist Church, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.
Mary F. Morgan
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Mary Francis "Aunt Sis" Morgan, 83, a native of Marshall, died Jan. 6, 2002.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at Steele-Bullock Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Dunston of Portsmouth; four sisters, Beatrice Jackson and Daisy Perryman, both of Chesapeake, Jean Francis of New York and Deloris Morgan of Chesapeake; and four brothers, Thomas Sumler of Maryland, Lucius Murphy, Fred Murphy and Cleo Murphy, all of Como.
