Blanche W. Phelps
WINDSOR - Blanche Williams Phelps, 78, a native of Bertie County, died December 17, 2001, in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
She was the widow of John W. Phelps.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Cashie Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd.
Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.
Memorials can be made to the Cashie Baptist Church, 221 S. Queen St., Windsor, N.C. 27983.
Mrs. Phelps was a tour guide at Hope Plantation and a member of Cashie Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Russell M. Phelps of Windsor; a sister, Lewellyn Babb of Greenville, S.C.; two half sisters, Patsy Cooke of Windsor and Gail Harris of Colerain; and one granddaughter.
Viola E. Ruffin
WINDSOR - Viola Elizabeth Ruffin, a native of Bertie County, died December 8, 2001.
A funeral was conducted December 14, at Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor Sarah W. Utterbach and Pastor Larry Walston.
Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.
Miss Ruffin was a retired teacher.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Bernice B. Rishkel
MURFREESBORO - Bernice Belche Rishkel, a native of Northampton County, died December 12, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
She was the widow of Michael Rishkel.
A graveside service was conducted Saturday at Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Willie McLawhorn.
Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, was in charge.
Mrs. Rishkel had served in several restaurants as a waitress for over 50 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Burnea R. Feeney of California and Vera R. Ricks of Conway; and a sister, Nellie B. Shewbart of Murfreesboro.
John R. Castelloe
WINDSOR - John Raymond Castelloe, 91, a native of Bertie County, died December 14, 2001.
He was the widower of Rosa Edna White Castelloe and Bettie Holder Cobb Castelloe.
A graveside funeral was conducted Sunday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Chuck Gray and the Rev. Wallace Phillips.
Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.
Castelloe retired from the Bertie County School System from the maintenance department.
He was a member of Windsor Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn C. Hill of Windsor; two sons, Floyd Castelloe of Aulander and Merle R. Castelloe of Windsor; a sister, Viola C. Cobb of Ahoskie; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Ulysses G. Cooper
WINDSOR - Ulysses G. Cooper, 100, died December 8, 2001, at the Brian Center.
He was the widower of Augustine Bazemore Cooper.
A funeral was conducted Saturday at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Scoggins.
Burial was in the Cooper family cemetery.
Cherry’s Funeral Home was in charge.
Cooper was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters, Martin Cooper, Rudolph Cooper, Willie Cooper, Minnie Warren and Daisy Mason, all of New York, Nancy Cherry of Windsor and George Cooper of Plymouth; a brother, Miles Cooper of Newport News, Va.; two sisters, Naomi Pinder and Annie Walston, both of Windsor; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great-grandchildren.
Ray C. Leary
AULANDER - Ray Charles Leary, died December 16, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Madeline C. Walker
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Madeline Collins Walker, a native of Bertie County, died December 8, 2001.
She was the widow of Gilbert Walker.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at Abyssinia Baptist Church by Dr. Frank Guns, Sr.
Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park.
Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
Survivors include a sister, Willie Edna Wilson of Chesapeake; and nieces and nephews.
Evans S. Everette
COMO - Evans Southall Everette, 70, a native of Newsoms, Va., died December 9, 2001, at Williamsburg Community Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Robert Holloman.
Burial will be in the Bynum family cemetery, Como.
Survivors include his children, Phyllis Cooper of Franklin and Kitty Ridley of Bergenfield, N.J.; a sister, Virginia Eason of Como; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Douglas A. Small
WINDSOR - Douglas Alexander Small, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., died November 6, 2001.
A funeral was conducted December 8 at Cedar Landing Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelton Barnes.
Burial was in the Small family cemetery.

Survivors include his father, Rodger L. Small; his mother, Naomi James Small; sisters, Melanie and Naomi Benita Small; one brother, Rodger L. Small Jr.; his grandmother, Rosezel James; stepmother, Dr. Rebecca Jackson Small; stepbrothers, James H. Jackson, DeShawn, Burnett and DeAndre Small; and two stepsisters, Vanessa and Quentajia Small.
Fannie H. Bell
WINDSOR - Fannie Harrell Bell, died December 5, 2001.
She was the widow of Albert Bell.
A funeral was conducted December 9, 2001, at Gilliam Funeral Home by the Rev. Shelton Barnes.
Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Survivors include two brothers, Jlyn Harrell, Jr. of Windsor, and George Washington Harrell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two sisters, Katie Harrell and Jean Washington, both of Brooklyn.
