Myrna S. Smith
HERTFORD - Myrna S. Smith, 61, a native of Craven County, died October 23, 2001, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, by the Rev. Gene Boyce.
Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, is in charge.
Mrs. Smith was a licensed practical nurse, having worked at Albemarle Hospital and Brian Center Health and Rehab in Windsor.
She was a member of Bridgeton Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, W. Ray Smith; a daughter, Sandy Smith Smoot of Iron Station; two brothers, Danny G. Smith and Joe W. Smith, both of Bridgeton; a granddaughter; and a step-granddaughter.
John H. Thigpen
HERTFORD - John Hugh Thigpen, 97, a native of Oconee, Ga., died October 22, 2001, in Britthaven Nursing Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Hertford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Leonard Doucette and the Rev. Ralph Epps. Burial will be in Cedar Wood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Swindell Funeral Home and following the service at the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be sent to the Church Music Program, Hertford United Methodist Church, 200 Dobbs St., Hertford, NC 27944.
Thigpen retired as a band saw filer having worked with numerous saw mills in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, including the former Lea Lumber Co. of Windsor.
He was a member of Hertford United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Men, the International Order of Red Men, Elizabeth City Chapter, and served in the Home Guard during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Janie Colson Thigpen; three daughters, Betty T. Swindell of Edenton, Susan McDuffie of Macon, Ga., and Margery Sienkiewicz of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

RICH SQUARE - Jessie Cleveland Taylor, 83, died October 23, 2001.

HALIFAX - Nadine Northington, 34, died October 20, 2001, at Halifax Regional Hospital, Roanoke Rapids.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allen Grove Baptist Church, Halifax, by the Rev. James Barham.
Interment will be in Crestview Cemetery.

Otis N. Lassiter
WOODLAND - Otis N. Lassiter, 100, a native of Northampton County, died October 22, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. William Powers.
Burial will be in the Lankford family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Lassiter was a retired casket maker from Northampton Casket Co.
He was a member and deacon of Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church and a Mason with Lee High Valley Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Lassiter; three sons, Leon Lassiter of Hyattsville, Md., James Lassiter of St. Albany, N.Y., and William Lassiter of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Christine Bazemore of Washington and Josephine Brown of West Wood, N.J.; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Katie R. Mitchell
NEW CASTLE, Del. - Katie Ruth Mitchell, a native of Bertie County, died October 21, 2001, at Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Bobby Warren.
Survivors include two sons, Tony L. Mitchell of Cincinnati and Milton A. Mitchell of New Castle; a foster son, Garry West; three sisters, Gladys Dudley, Jeanette Everett and Darlene Austin; three brothers, Alfred Freeman, Timothy Mitchell and Bobby Darby; two stepsisters, Janice Raynor and Dorothy Rather; and her stepmother, Aileen Mitchell.

Rebecca D. Parrish
SEABOARD - Rebecca Davis Parrish, 57, died October 23, 2001.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Conway Cemetery by the Rev. David Foster and the Rev. Ricky Barnes.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday and other times at the home of Rt. 1, Seaboard, N.C.
Mrs. Parrish was a retired employee for the Northampton County Clerk of Court with 29 years of service and she was the first secretary for Northampton County High School-East when it first opened.
She was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Willie N. Parrish; a daughter, Kim Byrum of Woodland; a son, Keith Parrish of Seaboard; her sister, Janie Allen of Roanoke Rapids; and five grandchildren.
