EMPORIA, Va. -- Mrs. Shirley Woodruff Harrell, 70, of Emporia, Va., the widow of Linwood Franklin "Big Daddy" Harrell, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001.
Mrs. Harrell is survived by two sons, Archer Linwood Harrell and his wife, Debra, and James Thomas Harrell and his wife, Patsy; one daughter, Mary Ann Harrell Watts and her husband, Jesse; six grandchildren, Arthur James Harrell, Thomas Linwood Watts, Jesse Ray Watts, Mary Linwood Harrell, David Franklin Watts and Melanie Blackmon; and six great-grandchildren, Dustin Clay Harrell, Kayla Brook Watts, Libby Renee' Watts, Nicholas Ryan Blackmon, Alexander Reed Blackmon and Trae Hunter Watts.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14 at Forest Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt, Va. is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Sept. 13.

McDONOUGH, Ga. -- Mrs. Ann Wright, 74, of McDonough, Ga., and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, in Henry County, Ga.
Mrs. Wright was born in Roanoke Rapids as the daughter of the late Joseph Collins and Betty Shell Collins.
She was a wonderful Christian lady, a faithful wife, and a loving mother.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Charles E. Wright of McDonough, Ga.; a son, Charles Edward Wright, Jr. of Palmyra, Va.; her brothers, Vance Collins of Roanoke Rapids, Charles Lee Collins of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson, Charles Edward Wright, III; and a granddaughter, Farrah Wright.
Following services in McDonough, Ga., a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 14 at Lakeview Park Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Arnold Cooper, the Rev. David McCoy and Dr. Charles Wright officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
Wrenn Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the local arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., today, Sept. 13.

WELDON -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Lassiter Ellis Adcox Cheek, 78, of 1024 Washington Ave., Weldon, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Cheek was a loving wife and mother, and a member of Weldon First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Weldon.
She is survived by her husband, James W. Cheek; one son, Harry "Pete" Ellis Jr. and his wife, Anne W. Ellis, of Roanoke Rapids; one brother, Paul Sanders and his wife, Jane, of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Jessie M. Redfield of Norfolk, Va.; two granddaughters, Vickie and Stacey; one grandson, Buck Ellis; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and four stepchildren, Nancy, Tony, Penny and Debbie.
Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14 in the chapel, with the Rev. Tony Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.

Katy Etta B. Hardison
NEWPORT, Tenn. -- Katy Etta Bland Hardison, 85, of Newport, Tenn., formerly of Plymouth, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Mariner Health Center in Newport.
She was a Newport resident for 19 years.
She received a B.A. degree from East Carolina Teachers College at Greenville.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Newport, Tenn., where she was formerly the organist and chairperson of the Second Millers group.
She was a first grade teacher in the Washington Co., N.C., school system for 35 years.
She was an officer in the Cocke Co., Tenn., Retired Teachers Association and an officer in the Cocke Co. Senior Citizens organization.
She was also a volunteer at the Mariner Health Care Center.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Montford and Deanna Cox Hardison of Washington, N.C., and George Edwards and Betty J. Edwards Hardison of Newport, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Perry and Molly Bland of Enfield; her grandchildren, George Edward Hardison, II of Newport, Tenn., Molly Spears Hardison of Northampton, Mass., Katy Aylene Hardison of Johnson City, Tenn., and Annalee Ray Hardison of New York City, N.Y.; and her great-grandchildren, George Edward "Trey" Hardison, III and Jessica Leighann Hardison of Newport, Tenn., and MacKensie Nikole Hardison of Johnson City, Tenn.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22 in the sanctuary of Plymouth Church of Christ, with Bob Moulden and D.L. Finch officiating.
Interment will be held in Hillside Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. at the church prior to the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Roanoke Bible College or Plymouth Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Carters Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, located on Everetts School Rd., Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Clinton Boyd officiating.
Burial will follow in the London Baptist Church Cemetery, located on Hwy. 158, Roanoke Rapids.

Wiley Rexford "Rex' Barnes
HALIFAX -- Mr. Wiley Rexford "Rex" Barnes, 67, of 41 Bradley Dr., Halifax, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Barnes was born on Jan. 9, 1934, in Wilson County, the son of the late Elvin and Lillian Ferrell Barnes.
He was employed with Gaston Red and White and retired from A&P; and Byrd's Food.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rayford and Rupert Barnes.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Frances Woodard Barnes; one daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Scott Hall of Roanoke Rapids; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wiley Rexford Barnes Jr. and Melissa, and James Ricky Barnes and Donnie, all of Roanoke Rapids; and four grandchildren, Kyle Barnes, Mary Beth Barnes, Blake Barnes and Drew Barnes.
