Harvey Wesley Woodruff
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Harvey Wesley Woodruff, 85, of 241 Williams St., Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Woodruff was born in Roanoke Rapids, the son of the late Walter Virginus Woodruff and Mary Coburn Woodruff.
He was a World War II, United States Army Air Corps veteran and was a retired U.S. Air Force Reserve Lt. Colonel.
He was a retired real estate broker with Proctor-Owen Real Estate and Insurance Company.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he held numerous offices.
He served on the Roanoke Rapids City Council and was a member of the Roanoke Rapids Lions Club.
He served as District Governor for Lions International from 1951 to 1952 and served as Director of Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank for years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Dawson Woodruff; a daughter, Mary Alison Smith of Raleigh; a son, Wesley Woodruff of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Mary Rohrer of Beaverton, Ore.; two grandchildren, Jordan Smith and Aaron Smith, both of Raleigh; and four step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William D. Sabiston, III officiating.
Wrenn Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Sept. 18.

MURFREESBORO -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Faison Funeral Home in Seaboard, for Mrs. Dorothy Pugh of Murfreesboro, who departed her earthly life Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Elmira Blakeney Jordan
GASTON -- Mrs. Elmira Blakeney Jordan, 71, of 115 Baird St., Gaston, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mrs. Jordan was born in Chesterfield, S.C., the daughter of the late Hurley M. Blakeney and Ellen McManus Blakeney, and was a member of Elam Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard K. Jordan; and a daughter, Joan Elmira Jordan.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Laura J. Ferguson of Emporia, Va., and Mrs. Kathryn J. Hamilton of Mt. Airy; a son, William "Kenny" Jordan of Gaston; five sisters, Betty Jean Humphries of Henderson, Ellen Greene of Rock Hill, S.C., Yvonne Little of Fuquay Varina, Peggy Willis of Jacksonville, Fla., and Linda Blakeney of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Hurley J. Blakeney of Chester, Vt., Jim Blakeney of Kinston, and Tommy Blakeney of Winterville; and four grandchildren.
Wrenn Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, in the chapel, with the Rev. Skip Cook officiating.
Burial will follow in Forest Hills Baptist Church Cemetery in Skippers, Va.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Laura Ferguson, Beef Road, Emporia, Va.

Henry Lee Thompson
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Henry Lee Thompson, 46, of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Life Care Center in Rocky Mount.
Mr. Thompson was born on July 4, 1955, in Alleghany County, Va., the son of the late Ernest Raymond and Mary Woolridge Thompson.
He is survived by six brothers, Carl Thompson of Surf Side, S.C., John Thompson of Covington, Va., James Thompson and Thomas Thompson, both of Roanoke, Va., and Buster Thompson and Johnny Entsminger, both of Roanoke Rapids; seven sisters, Josephine Martin and Emma Saunders, both of Roanoke, Va., Nancy Baldwin, Brenda Holcomb, Barbara Johnston, and Carolyn Standfield, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Patsy Hosey of Covington, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Arritt Funeral Home, 1102 S. Highland Ave., Covington, Va., is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, in the chapel.
Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington.
Active pallbearers will be Timmy Cook, John Thompson, James Thompson, Buster Thompson, Thomas Thompson and Johnny Entsminger.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the funeral home.
Colonel Ashford Britt Jr.
CLINTON -- Mr. Colonel Ashford Britt Jr., 78, of 284 Ashford Rd., Clinton, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Britt was a native of Sampson County, the son of the late Colonel Ashford and Flora Creel Britt.
He was a retired rural mail carrier and farmer.
He was a graduate of Halls High School and Campbell University.
He was a member of Keener United Methodist Church, the Rural Mail Carriers Association, the Community Hunting Club, and a former member of the Hobbton Boosters Club.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eunice Bryant Britt of the home; three daughters, Donna Britt Carr and her husband, Mac, of Wilson, Jane Britt Burke and her husband, Bob, of Roanoke Rapids, and Connie Britt Moseley and her husband, Jim, of Greenville; two sons, Samuel Henry Britt of Wilmington, and Howard Ashford Britt of Hampton, Va.; one sister, Elizabeth Britt Lucas and her husband, Robert, of Faison; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Carr Lancaster and her husband, Kevin, of Lake Tillery, Thomas McLeon Carr III and his wife, Stacie, of Rocky Mount, Robert Joseph Burke Jr. of Gaffney, S.C., Ashlyn Renee Burke and Stuart Harrison Tyndall, both of Wilmington, and Jamie Renee Britt and Ashleigh Michelle Britt, both of Denver, Co.; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Thomas Lancaster and Andrew Worth Lancaster, both of Mt. Gilead; and numerous cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Keener United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ralph Hill and the Rev. Jay Bissett officiating.
Burial will follow in Clinton Cemetery.

Sanada Powell Jackson
LITTLETON -- Sanada Powell Jackson, 76, of 8468 Hwy. 158, Littleton, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Jackson is survived by two sons, Aaron Powell of Baltimore, Md., and Erik Jackson (Felecia) of Washington, D.C.; his grandchildren, Acon, Brianna and Satarah; two brothers, Calvin Clay Powell (Lillian) and James Earvin Powell (Joyce) all of Littleton; three aunts, Elizabeth B. Price, Pearline Powell and Alice Powell, all of Littleton; and a devoted friend, Helen Ashe of Littleton.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at Carter's Chapel Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Fred Thorpe officiating.
Interment will follow in the Powell Family Cemetery in Littleton.

Jesse Thomas Colston
RICH SQUARE -- Mr. Jesse Thomas Colston, 84, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Autumn Care of the Roanoke Valley in Rich Square.
Mr. Colston was the son of the late Johnny Rufus Colston and Tobitha Lassiter Colston.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Retha Lane Colston; his second wife, Bertha Warren Colston; and two of his children, Jesse Marvin Colson and Retha Catherine Imel.
He was a member of Ashley's Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and was formerly a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 418 and served as past Master of the Lodge.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Colson Gibbs of Roanoke Rapids; two sons, William Lee Colson of Rich Square, and Jerry Rufus Colson of Winterville; two stepchildren, Judy Pulley of Courtland, Va., and Bobby Warren of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Tencie Duke of Edenton, and Lizzie Barnes of Potecasi; 13 grandchildren, which includes two special grandchildren, Jesse Marvin Colson and Debbie Colson Robbins; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at New Hope United Methodist Church in Lasker, with the Rev. Jo Hancock and the Rev. David Ross officiating.
Burial will follow in Lasker Cemetery.

RICH SQUARE -- Junius Austin Drew, 87, of Rich Square, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at Branches Chapel Baptist Church in Rich Square, with the Rev. Tony Flood officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. -- Ruth Moore Clary, 82, of Lawrenceville, Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001.
She was the widow of Hubert Louise Clary.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley C. Wray of Gaston, and Faye C. Schutt of Colonial Heights, Va.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gracie Eastwood of Lawrenceville, Va., and Edna Malone of Freeman, Va.; and one brother, Herbert Moore of Mechanicsville, Va.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lawrenceville.
