Loving mother, sister and grandmother
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Beverly Lawerence Carroll, 36, of 131 Creekside Court, Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
She was a nursing C.N.A. at Northcare in Greenville.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy K. Carroll.
She is survived by her husband, Lonnie D. McGary; a daughter, Valerie Patterson of Rocky Mount; two sons, Willie J. Harlow III and Frank "Bo Bo" Carter III, both of Roanoke Rapids; her mother, Elsie B. Carroll of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Brenda C. Bell and Linda D. Hudson, both of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Herman Lee Carroll of Gaston, and John Wesley Carroll of Plymouth; and one grandchild, AaLiayah Marie Patterson of Rocky Mount.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4 at the Antioch Christian Church Cemetery in Elams, Va., with the Rev. Norwood Starling officiating.
Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3.
Lucy Gardner Stewart
BATTLEBORO -- Lucy Gardner Stewart, 80, of Battleboro, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at her home.
She was born on Feb. 14, 1921, in Halifax County, to the late George W. and Blanche Neathery Gardner.
She was a member of Battleboro Baptist Church for more than 25 years.
She was right at home in her kitchen and was well-known for her peanut brittle and her cakes.
She enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge with her friends.
She was a devoted and loving Christian wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Steve Stewart.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Stewart Whitley of the home; two grandchildren, A. Battle Whitley IV and his wife, Judy, of Raleigh, and Steven O. Whitley of Rocky Mount; two great-grandchildren, Lee Battle Whitley and Warren Stewart Whitley; two brothers, Tommy Gardner and his wife, Margaret, of Cape Carteret, and Julian Gardner and his wife, Inez, of Weldon; four sisters, Maebelle Hudgins of Halifax, Nellie Ivey of Rich Square, Lena Twisdale of Enfield, and Ann Williams and her husband, David, of Ahoskie; one sister-in-law, Rose Gardner of Rocky Mount; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Battleboro Baptist Church, with Pastor Horace Ward officiating.
Burial will follow in Battleboro Cemetery.

ENFIELD -- Nathaniel Silver, 49, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Ivory Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Shelton Daniel officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Willie Claude Stephenson
RICH SQUARE -- Mr. Willie Claude Stephenson, 88, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 at First Baptist Church in Rich Square, with the Rev. William C. Clark officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 5 until 8 p.m., today, Oct. 2 at the church, and the family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m.

William Harvey Barnes
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. William Harvey Barnes, 75, of 35 East Pierce Rd., Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Barnes was a World War II Navy veteran and was retired from J.P. Stevens Textile Mill here.
He was a member of South Rosemary Baptist Church, was an avid fisherman, and was a loving father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Barber.
He is survived by three sons, Bobby Barnes and his wife, Ellen, of Hinesville, Ga., and Jerry Barnes and his wife, Alice, and David Barnes and his wife, Sue, all of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Calvin D. Barnes and James C. Barnes, both of Roanoke Rapids; three sisters, Katie Copeland and Katherine Thompson, both of Windsor, and Betty Sue Barnes of Greenville; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his personal and special friend, Betty Lou Woodruff of Roanoke Rapids.
Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 in the chapel, with the Rev. Ron Dyson officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

DARLINGTON -- Irene Hunt Shelton, 69, of 460 Shelton Rd., Darlington, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Shelton; her parents, George and Lillia Hunt; a son, Bob Shelton; and one grandchild, Ben Bryant.
She is survived by one son, James Wade Shelton and his wife, Jan, of Bloomingdale, Ga.; three daughters, Shirley Ann Rasnake and her husband, Carlos, and Marilyn Shelton Kirkland and her husband, Ronnie, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Nora Shelton of Darlington; two brothers, Charlie Hunt of Scotland Neck, and James E. Hunt of Gaston; one sister, Betty Williams of Rocky Mount; her mother-in-law, Dora E. Aycock of Darlington; three grandsons, Robert Louis Shelton Jr., James Art Shelton and James L. Shelton; seven granddaughters, Hope S. Powell, Lisa Shelton, Robin Shelton, Mandy Shelton, Nicole Shelton, Karen Watts and Hunter Peterson; one stepgrandson, Travis Kirkland; and eight great-grandchildren.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Ruth Daniel, 41, of 1913 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
She is survived by her mother, Sarah "Mae" Daniel of the home; two sisters, Sarah Daniel Hargrove (Samuel), and Mary Daniel Carter (Joseph), all of Newark, N.J.; and three brothers, Joe H. Daniel (Claudette) of Raleigh, Shelby C. Daniel of Roanoke Rapids, and James J. Daniel of the home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3 at First Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Michael Simmons officiating.
Interment will follow in the London Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

WELDON -- Miland "Mike" Boone, 60, of 510 County Rd., Weldon, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Mr. Boone was a barber at Boone's Barber Shop in Weldon.
He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Boone of the home; four children, Michael J. Boone of Weldon, Myra A. Boone and Michelle Y. Pass (Stephen), both of Charlotte, and Cynthia Gary of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Alice B. Lowe of Garysburg; four brothers, James W. Boone Jr. (Viola) of Garysburg, David M. Boone (Jean) of Weldon, Clarence Boone (Barbara) of Atlanta, Ga., and Douglas Boone of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren; an aunt, Minnie Williams of Garysburg; and an uncle, Richard Boone (Clara) of Weldon.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4 at Chapel Grove Baptist Church in Garysburg, with the Rev. Elbert E. Lee officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
