MURFREESBORO - William Moore, 68, a native of Northampton County, died December 8, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nebo Baptist Church by the Rev. Holloman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Gertie P. Moore; children, Bruce Moore of Winton, Edrion Grant of Woodland, Wilomenia Beale of Ahoskie; stepdaughter, Marjorie Barham of Forstfield, Md.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Kevin Booker
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Kevin Booker, 23, a native of Philadelphia, died December 7, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Hunter's Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in the Lee family cemetery.
Booker was employed with Perdue Farms.
Survivors include his mother, Gail Ruffin of Philadelphia; and an aunt.
Roman C. Mitchell
HOLLIS, N.Y. - Roman Cling Mitchell, 73, a native of Hertford County, died November 29, 2001, at Hollis Wood Nursing Home.
A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. James Wiggins. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha P. Mitchell of Laurelton; children, Roman Carl Mitchell and Deloise A. Mitchell, both of Laurelton, Brenda M. Morris, Carolyn M. White and Deborah M. Parker, all of Ahoskie; sisters and brothers, Stanley Mitchell of Springfield Gardens, Roosevelt Mitchell, Mittie "Jeanette" Mitchell and Marie Mitchell, all of Jamaica, Bernice Sessoms of Aulander, Beatrice Carter of Georgia and Ruby Sessoms of Ahoskie; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Jacob L. Dickens Sr.
HALIFAX - Jacob Leonard Dickens Sr., 91, died December 3, 2001. He was the widower of Ellen Miles Dickens.
A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Askew Funeral Services Chapel by the Rev. Skip Cook and the Rev. Grady Dickens. Burial was in Crestview Cemetery.
Dickens was a lifetime farmer and a member and deacon of Elam Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Gray Davis and Lou D. Stephenson, both of Seaboard and Nan D. Howell of Wilmington; a son, J.L. "Leon" Dickens Jr. of Garysburg; three sisters, Avis Williams, Minnie Grace Horton and Hazel Hasty, all of Roanoke Rapids; three brothers, Elliott Dickens of Garysburg, the Rev. Grady Dickens, Dortches and Allen Dickens, Gaston; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
William Murphy
COMO - William Murphy, 66, a native of Northampton County, died December 1, 2001, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, Conway, by the Rev. Jonah Walston. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Murphy was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Murphy; three sons, Tony Murphy of Atlanta, Ga., Steve Murphy of Como and W.C. Murphy of Raleigh; one daughters, Sabrina Murphy of Como; two brothers, Fred Murphy and Lucius Murphy, both of Como; one sister, Cleo Murphy of Como; and seven grandchildren.
Katherine Watford
AHOSKIE - Katherine Watford, 79, a native of Bertie County, died December 2, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Wynn's Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Lee. Burial will be in the Watford family cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
She was a cook with Pine Wood Manor and a member of Wynn's Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Eddie Heckstall of Brooklyn, N.Y., David Watford of Gates and Charlie Watford of Florida; three daughters, Mary Wiggins of Murfreesboro, Alice Holloman and Almarie Edwards, both of Ahoskie; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Ernest Mitchell
DETROIT, Mich. - Funeral services for Ernest Mitchell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Philippi Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton Hall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Wilma F. Early
IVOR, Va. - Wilma Futrell Early, 88, formerly of Woodland, died December 3, 2001. She was the widow of John Tildon Early.
A graveside funeral was conducted Wednesday at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. J. Robert Bennett. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, was in charge.
Mrs. Early was a homemaker and a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. James Earl Nash of Ivor; and nieces and nephews.
Wilbur R. Jones
WOODLAND - Wilbur Russell "Bear Foggs" Jones, 84, a native of Hertford County, died November 30, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Menola Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Grant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.
Jones was a retired basket maker. He was a member of Menola Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Cleo Merriweather of Pensacola, Fla., Barbara Majette and Mary Jones, both of Ahoskie; and four brothers, James Majette of New York, Roosevelt Anderson of Woodland, Walter C. Manley and Charlie Majette, both of Aulander.
Earnhart Smallwood
WINDSOR - Earnhart Smallwood, 65, died November 30, 2001.

SUFFOLK, Va. - Dennis Cross Butler, 73, died November 30, 2001.

Josephus Chavis
AHOSKIE - Josephus "J.C." Chavis, a native of Ahoskie, died November 30, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. Michael Holloman. Burial was in the family cemetery. Gates County Community Funeral Home was in charge.
Chavis retired in 1980 after 30 years of service.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Santiogo Smith of Amelia, Va., Rita Chavis Boone of Gates and Riggi Chavis of Jersey City, N.J.; three sons, Joseph Chavis Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., William C. Chavis of Old Bridge, N.J., and Richard Jaycee Chavis of Audubon; six sisters, Clarice Williams and Shirley L. Brown, both of Portsmouth, Sarah Cotton of Ahoskie, Mary Bowser, Juanita Artis, Cyrinthia Hanford, all of Chesapeake; four brothers, Larry Chavis of New York, Lonnie Felton and the Rev. Alton Chavis, both of Portsmouth and Robert Felton of Chesapeake; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
