HOPEWELL, Va. -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by the Gould Chapel Nelsen Funeral Home in Hopewell, Va., for Edward Jake Walker, 82, of Hopewell, Va., who died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001.
Duward Allen "D.A." Daniel
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Duward Allen "D.A." Daniel, 85, of 416 E. 14th St., Roanoke Rapids, died today, Sept. 24, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Daniel was a longtime member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as secretary-treasurer for more than 40 years.
He also served as Sunday school teacher and on the Board of Deacons.
He was retired from J.P. Stevens Company with more than 50 years of service.
He served in the United States Army during World War II, where he served in Rhineland/Central Europe, earning several citations and awards including the American Theater Campaign medal, and the Eamet Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Joyner Daniel; four children, Linda Tomlinson and her husband, Terry, Betty Warwick and her husband, Bruce, Joyce Leake and her husband, Russell, and Ruth Norton and her husband, George; 10 grandchildren, Daniel Tomlinson and his wife, Anne, Julie T. Hayes and her husband, Tim, Allen Grant, Gina Warrick, Joy Powell and her husband, Tony, Heather Smythe and her husband, Blair, Brian Leake, Lindsey Leake, Kristy Walker and her husband, Scott, and David Norton; nine great-grandchildren, Katy, Ross, Adam and Meg Tomlinson, Emilee Hayes, Alyssa Grant, Cameron and Christopher Powell, and Malanie Smythe; three sisters, Hettie Taylor of Enfield, Ethel Stowe of Rocky Mount, and Alma Smith of Red Oak; and a longtime close friend and brother-in-law, Moses Joyner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26 at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Frank Elliott and the Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, and other times at 213 Beechwood Dr., Roanoke Rapids.
Emma Dean Edmonds Hawkins
NORFOLK, Va. -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, for Emma Dean Edmonds Hawkins, 64, of Norfolk, Va., and a native of Halifax County, who died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va.
Thomas Fleming Bobbitt
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Thomas Fleming Bobbitt of Charlottesville, Va., died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001.
Thomas Fleming, as he was called, was adopted and raised by his uncle, Johnnie Bobbitt, and aunt, Bessie Bobbitt, in Littleton after his mother died.
He learned, then worked the carpenter trade through the Bobbitt family who were employed by Rose's 5&10 Stores in North and South Carolina.
He met and married Iola L. Taylor while remodeling a store in Gaffney, S.C.
The family moved to Falls Church, Va. He was one of many carpenters who built the Pentagon and one of the last to leave.
He was especially known in Washington, D.C. for his finish work, remodeling many offices along L Street.
Retiring to Halifax, then to Lake Monticello to be near his daughter, Sylvia Ardinger and her family.
He is survived by his wife, Iola L. Bobbitt; one daughter, Sylvia B. Ardinger of Lake Monticello; three sons, Robert F. Bobbitt of Flagstaff, Ariz., Joseph M. Bobbitt of Asheville, and Kenneth F. Bobbitt of Leesburg; one half-sister, Dawn S. Taylor of Roanoke Rapids; one half-brother, Grady Shearin of Roanoke Rapids; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23 in the Hill and Wood Chapel.
The Rev. June Clifford officiated.
Interment will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Frodarick Memorial Park in Gaffney, S.C.

Dennis Ward Patrick, Sr.

GREENVILLE – Dennis Ward Patrick, Sr., age 88, of the 2200 block of Yorkshire Drive, and formerly of Aulander, NC, died Thursday, September 16, 2010, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Greenville.
Mr. Patrick was born In Hertford, North Carolina, on November 23, 1921, a son of the late John and Leona Ward Patrick.
He was a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree and he served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After a 30 year career with the North Carolina Division of Highways, Mr. Patrick retired in 1979 as Chief Engineer.
While living in Aulander, he was Mayor of the town from 1986 – 1990, and he was an active member and former deacon of Aulander Baptist Church.
After moving to Greenville with his wife, Joyce, in 2001, Dennis became a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Greenville.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Joyce Long DuBose Patrick of the home; his two daughters, Betsy Sawyer of Washington, NC, and Morris Ann Johnson and husband, Walter of New Smyrna Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Donald Sawyer of Washington, NC, Wendy Terry of Sparks, NV, and Michael Patrick of Winter Springs, FL; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two step-sons, Jon DuBose and wife, Debra, and Will DuBose and wife, Melinda; a step-daughter, Brent Brewster and husband, Brad; and four step-grandchildren.
Mr. Patrick was predeceased by two wives, Catherine Morris Patrick and Shirley Peele Patrick; a son Dennis Ward Patrick, Jr.; a grandson, Dennis Ward Patrick, III, and a son-in-law, Don Sawyer.
A celebration of life graveside service with entombment will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2010, in the Aulander Cemetery with the Rev. Joyce Day officiating.

William H. "Billy" Venable

MERRY HILL – William Harrison "Billy" Venable, age 44, of the 200 block of Blackrock Road, died Friday, July 9, 2010, at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
Mr. Venable was born on October 3, 1965, in Hertford County, a son of Ernest J. and Jennie Walters Venable.
He was a graduate of Ridgecroft School and Atlantic Christian College and was the former owner and manager of Electric Motor Service of Ahoskie.
Besides his parents, Ernest and Jennie Venable, Billy is survived by a sister, Terry V. Rose of Waynesville, NC; and a brother, Donald Venable of Tuscaloosa, AL.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert May officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC, 27361-0338.

AHOSKIE – Joseph Dale Parker, age 63, of the 600 block of NC Hwy 461, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Parker was born in Gates County on August 18, 1946, a son of the late James Kindred and Mary Mullen Parker.
He was an army veteran and was retired as a railroad conductor.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Genie P. Parker; his daughter, Dale Parker Powell of Batesville, AR; his sons, Wesley Joseph Parker and David James Parker, both of Ahoskie, NC; a sister, Delores Speight of Sunbury, NC; three brothers, Johnnie B. Parker of Eure, NC, Alvin Parker of Chesapeake, VA, and Fred Parker of Rocky Mount, NC; and two grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010, at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, Ahoskie.
A private, family only burial will be on the Parker Farm.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to services.

Louise Hinson Lucas

Louise Hinson Lucas, died Tuesday June 29, 2010 in Heritage Hospital, Tarboro.
Louise was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Her parents were Henry Hinson and Ruth Lancaster Hinson.
Louise was active in civic and church activities including Ahoskie Women’s Club, First Baptist Choir and a Sunday school teacher, and other volunteer services in the community.
She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Hogan and husband John; Angela Urguhart and husband Burgis and two grandchildren Shaun Hogan and Hayes Willingham and husband Jodi.
She is also survived by her beloved friend and companion Doris Britt.
Family will receive guests at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home at 1:00 PM prior to Memorial service conducted by the Rev. Daniel Glaze at 2:00PM Friday July 2, 2010.
A graveside service is scheduled at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, Ahoskie.
