COLERAIN – Alvin Carol Basnight, age 61, of the 200 block of Basnight Road, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Basnight was born on May 1, 1949, in Hertford County, a son of Margie Perry and the late Isaac Milton Basnight. He attended Perrytown Assembly of God Church and was a member of the Perrytown Volunteer Fire Department. Alvin was a member of the Phi Theta Pi fraternity, the Colerain Masonic Lodge and was a former member of the Windsor Rotary Club. He was retired from the NC Department of Corrections with over 35 years of service as a probation officer.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Glenda Askew Basnight of the home, and his mother, Margie Perry Basnight, also of the home; his daughter, Holly Basnight White and her husband, Charlie White, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Milton Ray Basnight and wife, Judy of Askewville, NC, and J. C. Basnight and wife, Jill of Fayetteville, NC.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Perrytown Assembly of God Church. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, and other times at the Perrytown Assembly of God Church fellowship hall. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Perrytown Fire Department or to Perrytown Assembly of God Church, 928 Perrytown Rd., Colerain, NC, 27924.
Audrey Phelps Lassiter

Audrey Phelps Lassiter, age 88, of the 200 Block of St. John-Millennium Road, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 24, 1921, in Creswell, NC, the daughter of the late Bailey and Clara Phelps. She has been preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Charlie Robert Lassiter, Sr.
Mrs. Lassiter was a homemaker and loved flowers and spending time with her family and friends she was known to many as "Granny". She was a member of Union Methodist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Carolyn Todd, Wayne Lassiter and his wife Wanda of Aulander, Ray Lassiter and his wife Ivey of Ahoskie, Carol Ann Lassiter and her husband Donald of Roanoke Rapids, Jean Watlack of Spring Lake, NC, Charlie Lassiter, Jr. and his wife Vicki of Corapeak, NC, and Brenda Whitaker and her husband Mike of Ahoskie. She is also survived by her 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, three brothers S.D. Phelps, Avery Phelps of Plymouth, NC, Wayne Phelps, Augusta, GA. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Lassiter was predeceased by her brothers Andy Phelps, Bailey Phelps, and Gerald Phelps.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel of Garrett-Jones Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Ahoskie Cemetery. Pastors Thomas Taylor and Pauline Flores will officiate.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 30, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:30PM at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home and other times at the home.

James Randolph Acree

AULANDER - James Randolph Acree, age 84, of Williford Circle, died Friday, July 23, 2010, at Rich Square Health Care Center.
Mr. Acree was born in Bertie County on May 11, 1926, a son of the late Edmond Joseph and Hattie Joyner Acree. He was retired from the U.S. Navy.
James is survived by three daughters, Lynn Acree and Lisa Acree of Rhode Island, and Diane Beckman of Alpharetta, GA; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Acree of Aulander.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Aulander Cemetery.

Reverend Lester Calvin Jarrett, Sr. age 79, of the 400 Block of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at his home. He was born June 18, 1931 in Davidson County to the late Luther Jarrett and Mille Meyers Jarrett.
He was a member of Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church, a member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, a member of the Ahoskie Rescue Squad, a Hospital Chaplain and a Fulltime Pastor.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, August 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Carpenter Shop Church. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. Bishop Jimmy Whitfield will officiate.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Elma Dean Jarrett of the home, daughters Bonnie Jarrett Edwards and her husband Rev. Paul Edwards of Ahoskie, Dawn Jarrett Hill and her husband Keith of Newbern, a son Gerald Jarrett and his wife Sue of Windsor 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and a daughter-in-law Yvonne Jarrett.
He was predeceased by a son L.C. Jarrett and two brothers and two sisters.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie and other times at the home.
Charlie Watt White, Jr.

ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Charlie Watt White, Jr., age 31, of Brock Ridge Run, died Friday, August 20, 2010, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Charlie was born in Chowan County, on July 2, 1979, a son of Catherine and Charlie W. White, Sr. He was a very active member of Forest Park Church and was a service manager for Gately Communications Company in Kill Devil Hills, NC. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Fraternity, and a being an avid hunter, a proud member of Bucklesberry Hunt Club.
Besides his parents, Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Holly Basnight White; a brother, Matthew White of Merry Hill, NC; and his maternal grandmother, Edna Ford of Buena Vista, NC. He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Thelma Bruce.
A celebration of life service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at Forest Park Church in Elizabeth City, with the Rev. Scott Neal officiating. Burial will follow in the White Family Cemetery, Merry Hill, NC. The family will receive friends at Forest Park Church from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 23, and other times at the home of Charlie and Holly White. COLERAIN – Stephen Andrew Northcott, age 63, of the 700 block of Morris Ford Road, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010, in his home.
Mr. Northcott was born in Norfolk, VA, on October 26, 1946, a son of the late Clarence and Grace Miller Northcott. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and was Crop Services Agent with Coastal Agribusiness. Mr. Northcott was a Navy veteran.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Katherine Blanchard Northcott; his daughters, Deann Wetherington and her husband, Larke of Greenville, NC, and Susan Nelson and husband, Chris of Colerain, NC; his son, Tony Northcott and wife, Melissa of Colerain; and a sister, Nelda Bowen of Colerain. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Haley, Holden, Lorie, Emily and Brantley.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home with Walter Byrum officiating. Colerain – Margie Perry Basnight, age 85, of the 200 block of Basnight Road, died Friday, July 9, 2010, at her home.
Mrs. Basnight was born on November 1, 1924, in Bertie County, a daughter of the late Lewis Clyde and Brunie Perry Perry. She was a faithful member of Perrytown Assembly of God Church, serving as Sunday school teacher for over 64 years. Mrs. Basnight was retired from the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service working with the expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. In her younger years she was a seamstress and worked for Kelwood Manufacturing Company in Ahoskie. Margie was an avid gardener, enjoying her flower gardens, and as a hobby, she enjoyed painting.
Left to cherish her memory is her sons, Milton Ray Basnight and wife, Judy of Askewville, NC, J. C. Basnight and wife, Jill of Fayetteville, NC, daughter -in-law, Glenda A. Basnight of Colerain, NC; and a sister, Peggy Perry Rose of Windsor, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Greg Basnight and wife, Cher of Winterville, NC, Heather Henson and husband, John of Abilene, TX, Holly white and husband, Charlie, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, and Huntre Coleman and husband, Matt of Linden, NC; and one great-grandson, Cole Isaac Henson. Besides her husband, Isaac Milton Basnight, she was predeceased by a son, Alvin Carol Basnight.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, at Perrytown Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain. Willard H. Whitmeyer

Willard H. Whitmeyer age 85 of Ahoskie, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Whitmeyer was born November 27, 1924 in Newark, New Jersey a son of the late Willard Whitmeyer and Marie Snabel. He was an Army veteran serving during WWII and worked at Carolina Aluminum as Plant Engineer and was Treasurer for the Ahoskie Rescue Squad for several years.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lillian Klubenspies Whitmeyer and son Eric Whitmeyer both of Ahoskie.
He was predeceased by his brother Herbert Whitmeyer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. Rev. Robert May will officiate.

AHOSKIE - Howard Vick, Jr., age 64, of the 500 block of W. First St., Died Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Vick was born in Newsoms, Southampton County, VA, on August 21, 1946, a son of Howard, Sr. and Mildred Ada Blowe Vick. He was a member of Menola Baptist Church and was an employee for the Town of Ahoskie.
Left to cherish his memory is his son, Howard Davidson Vick of Ayden, NC; his sister, Jane Ellen Vick of Ahoskie; an uncle, Ernest Blowe of Ahoskie; and a special friend, Gwen Northcott of Menola.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at Menola Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert May officiating. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. AHOSKIE – Lucile Burden Nichols, age 90, of the 300 block of NC Hwy 42 West, died Friday, September 3, 2010, in her home.
Mrs. Nichols was born in Northampton County on November 29, 1919, a daughter of the late Eugene and Sallie Verlie Burgess Burden. She was a member of Earlys Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Melvin Ray Nichols and wife, Joyce of Ahoskie; her daughter, Joyce Ann Edwards and Husband, Danny of Como, NC; grandchildren, Debbie Edwards Stancil, of Dudley, NC, Kathy Nichols Stertz and husband, Mike of Barhansville, VA, Tracy L. Nichols of Ahoskie, Donna Nichols Garner and husband, Harvey of Sanders, KY, Ann-Marie Nichols Munford and husband, Chuck of Ahoskie, and Mandy L. Nichols of Ahoskie; and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, William Lee Nichols, Mrs. Nichols was predeceased by a son, James William Nichols.
