Thomas Paul Mathias
September 08, 2010

Thomas Paul Mathias, 92, passed away at his home in Ahoskie, NC, on September 8, 2010.

Thomas was born in Corapeake, NC, on May 5, 1918 to the late Elizabeth Dale and Paul Eley Mathias.

For 45 years, he owned and operated his own logging business.

He was a member of the Winton Baptist Church where he had served in the past as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for 25 years.

He was also very proud to be a Mason for over 60 years. He was Past Master of Lodge American George 17. He was a member of Scottish Rite and the Shriners.

In his younger days, he was also a Boy Scout Leader.

One of his favorite past times was going to the Outer Banks fishing.

He was a devoted husband to Annie Piland Mathias for 72 years.

He was a proud father to his three daughters. Marie Mathias Benthall, Betty Mathias and Jeanette Mathias all of Ahoskie.

He was loved greatly by five grandchildren. Patricia Benthall Brown and her husband Sherwood of Ahoskie, Darrell Thomas Bracy and his wife Amy of Ahoskie, Karen Benthall Daly of Ahoskie, Laura Jeanette Batts and her husband Mitch of Ahoskie, Kevin Thomas Mathias and his wife Holly of Ahoskie.

He was cherished by seven great-grandchildren. Courtney Brown Simpson and her husband Henry of Harrellsville. Emily Renee Bracy of Harrellsville, Hunter Thomas Bracy of Ahoskie, Wyatt Walker Daly and Olivia Grace Daly of Ahoskie, Shelton Mitchell Batts II and Annie Laura Batts of Ahoskie, and Annabell Faith Mathias of Ahoskie.

He was adored by one great-great-grandchild. William Henry Simpson of Harrellsville.

He is survived by three sisters. Annie Laura Sexton of Gatesville, NC, Juanita Christenson of Winton and Joyce Sexton of Winton. He was preceded in death by a sister Aldeen Duke.

If you asked him what was his greatest accomplishment in life, he would tell you his family. He loved them in a very special way and he was proud of each of them.

His family is also proud of him and the way he lived his life for 92 years. He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at the graveside at 4:00 PM Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home Friday, September 10, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM and also after the graveside service at Winton Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St. Oxford, NC 27565.

Don Northcott
September 7, 2010

Don Northcott, age 62, of Trap, died Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 23, 1948 in Bertie Co. to the late Virgil I. Northcott and Louise Perry Northcott.

He was a graduate of East Carolina University, worked as Manager for North Eastern Grain, owned and operated Trap Farm Supply and J. and N. Enterprises and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Bob Johnson and Rev. Billy Presley will officiate.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 32 years Marie Northcott, a son Donald Ray Northcott, Jr. and his wife Nina of Trap, a sister Dale Knowles of Windsor, a brother Virgil Northcott of Ahoskie and a grandson Alexander Northcott.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1342 Meadow Rd, Trap.

Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Janie Lee Thompson Mitchell
September 21, 2010

AHOSKIE - Janie Lee Thompson Mitchell, age 77, of Church St., died Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at Vintage Inn of Williamston.

Mrs. Mitchell was born on August 14, 1933, in Lumberton, NC, a daughter of the late Edwin Wilson Thompson and Lucile Margaret Gentry Thompson.

She was a member of the Red House Presbyterian Church, Semora, NC.

Janie was active in the Gallery Theater, the Masters Garden Club, the Railroad Gang and was a Girl Scout Leader for many years.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughters, Tracey Range of Richmond, VA, Kelly Callis and husband, Lee of Merry Hill, NC, Caroline Bazemore and husband, Alan of Cofield and Georgia Mitchell and husband, George Schuld of Bayville, NJ; her brothers, Ed Thompson, Jr., and Bill Thompson; and a sister, Margaret Thompson, all of Blanche, NC; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at the Red House Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Semora, NC, with Amanda Range officiating.

The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 23, 2010.

Gladys Wiggins Davis
October 15, 2010

AHOSKIE – Gladys Wiggins Davis, age 92, of the 500 block of Center Grove Road, died Friday, October 15, 2010, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Davis was born on November 28, 1917, in Hertford County, NC, a daughter of the late Dennison and Susan Wiggins.

She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, a homemaker, and was the widow of Thomas Irving Davis.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughters, Patsy D. Doughtie and husband, J. C., and Nancy D. Jernigan and husband, William, both of Ahoskie; her sons, Gerald Davis and wife, Cenith of Ahoskie, Jimmy Davis and wife, Iris of Williamston, Teddy Davis and wife, Frances of Ahoskie, Eddie Davis of Sunbury, and Lewis Davis and wife, Dail of Rocky Mount. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Davis was predeceased by a daughter, Betty D. Todd and a son, Arthur Davis.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Skeens officiating. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, prior to services and other times at her home.

Glenn Roger Phillips, Sr.

Glenn Roger Phillips, Sr, age 71, of Murfreesboro, died Wednesday October 6, 2010 at his home.

He was born January 15, 1939 in Accomac, VA to the late Elmer Vernon Phillips and Viola Roger Phillips.

He was a US Coast Guard Veteran, an Electrician, was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his boat, the "Semper Paratus".

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday October 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie.

Left to cherish his memory are his children; Debbie Wanser and her husband Russ of Black Mountain, Lori Rogers and her husband Jim of Miami, Fl, Lisa Smith of Miami, FL and Glenn Phillips, Jr (Rog) of Miami, Fl., grandchildren; Ryan Bielecki, Kirsten Rogers, AJ Rogers, Todd and Taylor Smith, a sister Connie Martin and a brother Elmer Phillips both of Eastern Shore, VA.

The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Dale Lassiter, 515 Vinson Mill Rd, Murfreesboro.

Elder Lafeyette "Whitey" White
November 16, 2010

AHOSKIE – Elder Lafeyette "Whitey" White, age 76, of the 900 block of Colony Ave., died Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at his home.

Mr. White was born on December 23, 1933, in Bertie County, a son of the late Ralph and Lula Mae Cale White.

He was a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church, Beechwood Country Club and the Northeastern Seniors Tour.

"Whitey" was retired as a technician for Northeastern Oil Company.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Elaine Jean Byrge White of the home, his daughters, Jody Maree’ White Smith of Morehead City, NC, and Jill Leanne White of Wilmington, NC; a son Joel Elder White also of Wilmington; three sisters, Hettie Nadine Hewitt of Windsor, NC, Ervie Girlean Hoggard of Colerain, NC, and Ella Gray Thompson, also of Windsor, NC. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Jena Smith Corey and Charles Gilbert Smith, Jr.

Mr. White was predeceased by a brother, Dederick White.

A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted at the Ahoskie United Methodist Church on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Lee Edwards officiating. The family will be at the church at 10:00 a.m. to greet friends. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the Ahoskie United Methodist Church Pergola Fund, P.O. Box 665, Ahoskie, NC, 27910.

Aubrey Lee Mizelle
November 10, 2010

COLERAIN – Aubrey Lee Mizelle, age 82, of the 500 block of Elm Grove Road, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Mizelle was born in Bertie County on June 28, 1924, a son of the late Starkey E. and Sallie White Mizelle.

He was retired as a farmer and as a supervisor with West Point Pepperell.

Aubrey was a very active member of Elm Grove Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon and faithfully served as music director for over 50 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of almost 69 years, Hattie Mae Hoggard Mizelle, a daughter Connie M. Mizelle and husband, J. D. of Manteo, NC; a son, Terry Mizelle and wife, Rosa of Colerain, NC; four grandchildren, Christopher Brent Mizelle of New Bern, NC, Stephanie Capehart of Raleigh, NC, Kimberly White of Aulander, NC, and Heather Hinchey of Colerain, NC; and three great-grandchildren, C. Perry Mizelle, Aubrey Claire Mizelle and Melvin Lee Hinchey, III.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at Elm Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Preston Jernigan and Rev. Ken Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the home at any time, and particularly for those who are from out of town, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made in Mr. Mizelle’s memory to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC, 27910.

Ann Gibbs MacMillan
October 23, 2010

Ann Gibbs MacMillan, 78, of the 200 Block of East Church St., Ahoskie died Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Herbert Edward Gibbs and Elydia Cooper Gibbs.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Timothy L. MacMillan and Herbert E. MacMillan both of Ahoskie.

Irene Corey Overton
October 15, 2010

AHOSKIE - Irene Corey Overton, age 89, of the 400 block of North Curtis Street, died Friday, October 15, 2010, at her home.

Mrs. Overton was born in Bertie County on February 1, 1921, a daughter of the late Lenora Elizabeth Gurganus and Calvin Bennett Corey.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and a homemaker.

Irene was the widow of Rufus C. Overton.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughters, Becky O. Hedspeth of Raleigh, NC, and Cheryl O. Sroka of Lilburn, GA; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A graveside celebration of life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 18, 2010, at Highland Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Daniel Glaze officiating. Cecil Chamblee Lowe
November 08, 2010

Cecil Chamblee Lowe, age 92, of Colerain, died Monday, November 8, 2010 at his home.

He was born August 30, 1918 in Hertford County to the late Roy Lowe and Belle Chamblee Lowe.

He was the husband of the late Bernice Brinkley Lowe.

He was a US Army Veteran of WWII, a graduate of Harrellsville High School, a member of Colerain Baptist Church, Past President of the NC Checkers Association, Former Director of the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association and a Professional Baseball Umpire.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev. Robert May will officiate.

Left to cherish his memory are his brothers; Fred Lowe and Douglas Lowe both of Ahoskie and Roy L. Lowe of Lake Waccamaw and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister Doris Humphrey and a brother Earl Lowe.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie.

Memorial donations may be made to the Oxford Orphanage, Colerain Rescue Squad or to Colerain Fire Department.
