Kenneth Reid Bryant
November 06, 2010

Kenneth Reid Bryant, age 84, of Colerain, a wonderful father, grandfather, husband and brother, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 6, 2010, surrounded by family and friends.

Mr. Bryant was born November 18, 1925 in Bertie County to the late Arthur Bryant and Opie Mitchell Bryant.

Mr. Bryant was a veteran of the US Army serving in WWII serving with the 301 Special Service Company in the Pacific Theater and served in Korea with the 592nd Amphibian Group. He served in the US Army National Guard for 30 years, was owner operator of Kenny’s Clover Farm in Colerain for 15 years, retired from the Roanoke Chowan Community College after 20 years as Continuing Education Coordinator.

Throughout his life, he was an active member of Colerain Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was a retired member of the Colerain Rescue Squad which he founded in 1960, was a Past member of the Lions Club and past Commander of American Legion Post 388 in Colerain, and was a volunteer with the March of Dimes.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Colerain Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev Don Roberts and Rev. Shelby Stephens will officiate.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 61 years Ruby Miller Bryant of the home, sons Kenneth Reid Bryant Jr and his wife Terry Bryant of Greenville and Michael Wayne Bryant and his wife Beth Bryant of Ahoskie and a daughter Amy Bryant Bracy and her husband Darrell T. Bracy of Winton, a sister Finette Bryant Matthews and a brother Bill Bryant, grandchildren; Kenneth R. Bryant III, Laura Bryant, Hayes Bryant, Miller Bryant, Emily Bracy and Hunter Bracy and his dog Tippy.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Deborah Ann Bryant and a brother A.D. Bryant.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Colerain Baptist Church, 202 N. Main St., Colerain, NC 27924 or Colerain Rescue Squad.

Vernon Francis Riddick
December 03, 2010

Vernon Francis Riddick, lovingly known as "Papa Goon", age 84, of Aulander, died Friday, December 3, 2010 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

He was born July 21, 1926 in Hertford County, to the late James T. Riddick and Maybelle J. Riddick.

He was married to the late Virginia Hughes Riddick for 50 years.

He was a WWII US Army veteran serving in the Philippines, a Commercial Printer for the News Herald, a Farmer, a proud member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

He was very proud to be from a large family in Hertford County and enjoyed his grandchildren tremendously.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. Rev Lee Edwards will officiate.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons Bart Riddick and his wife Charlotte of Ahoskie and Tim Riddick and his wife Pam of Pendelton, six grandchildren; Erin Riddick, Chase Riddick, Alex Riddick, Chase Colson, Thomas Riddick and Brooke Colson, two sisters Barbara Bowen of Ahoskie and Carolyn Wooten of Clemmons.

Mr. Riddick was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister; Emily, John, James T., Malcolm, Leon and Ed.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Memorials may be made to the Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

Harvey J. Brittenham
November 27, 2010

AULANDER – Harvey Jarnest Brittenham, age 92, of the 200 block of Millennium Road, died Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Hampton Veteran’s Administration Hospital.

Mr. Brittenham was born in Hertford County, on April 14, 1918, a son of the late Matrey and Janie Holloman Brittenham. He was a member of Earlys Baptist Church and was founder of Brittenham’s Rebuilding Service, Inc. He was an army veteran of WWII, serving in the European Theater where he earned four bronze stars and two purple hearts.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Lorraine B. Harrell and husband Charles of Ahoskie, NC; two sons, Thomas Brittenham and wife, Margaret, also of Ahoskie, and Cumin Brittenham and wife, Nancy of Aulander, NC. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jason Harrell, April Brittenham Dew, Kimberly King, Jeremy Brittenham, Joshua Brittenham and Justin Brittenham, and a great-granddaughter, Danielle Hope King. Mr. Brittenham was the last surviving sibling of seven, he was predeceased by his sisters, Exie Lassiter and Verlie Holloman and his brothers, Oris, Rudolph, Josh, and Henry Brittenham. He was also predeceased by his wives, Donnie Hurdle Brittenham and Betty Minton Brittenham.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Williams and Rev. Paul Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and other times at the home of Lorraine and Charles Harrell. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the Gates County Memorial VFW Post 7312, C/O Curtis Wilkins, 171 US Hwy 158 Business, E., Gatesville, NC, 27938.

Hazel Montague Sessoms Fowler

Hazel Montague Sessoms Fowler, 82, passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday night, December 7, 2010.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-seven years, William, of Colerain; her son William Jr. and wife Shelley of Greenville; daughter Carla Gibbons and her husband Bruce of Apex, N.C.; grandchildren Emily Fowler and Claire Fowler of Greenville, Bryan Gibbons and Rachel Gibbons of Apex; and first cousin Merle Montague of Windsor.

The daughter of Carl Burt Sessoms and Hazel Montague Sessoms of Colerain, Mrs. Fowler was born in Norfolk, VA, August 15, 1928.

She attended Colerain High School where she was valedictorian of her graduating class in 1945.

She was presented to N. C. Society at the 1947 Debutante Ball.

A graduate of Woman’s College in Greensboro (UNC – G) with a B.A. in primary education in 1949, she taught second grade at Myrtle Underwood Elementary for two years in Raleigh, N.C. She also taught two years in Harrellsville, N.C.

Mrs. Fowler was devoted to her husband and family and active in Colerain United Methodist Church and in her community. An organist for sixty-two years and soprano soloist at the church and throughout the community, Mrs. Fowler enjoyed sharing her gift of music.

She was a Sunday school teacher for the adult class, past president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service (United Methodist Women) at her church, Director of Colerain Beach, Inc., and past president of the local Women’s Club.

Mrs. Fowler was the operator of the family farm in Colerain.

Visitation is at the Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, 205 NC Hwy 42 W, Ahoskie, NC, on Friday, December 10, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30PM and other times at the home. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Colerain United Methodist Church, 209 W. Academy St.

Burial to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain.

Allie Mae Lassiter Byrd

Allie Mae Lassiter Byrd, of Bruce Farmer Rd., Aulander, NC, departed this life for a better home in heaven from Roanoke-Chowan Hospital on December 5, 2010.

She was born to E. T. and Clyde Lassiter on February 2, 1921 in Nash County.

She was predeceased by both parents and her husband, Jarvis Byrd.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Linda Byrd, Al Byrd, and Brenda Lassiter and husband Henry all of Aulander NC; and Luther Byrd and wife Melissa of Kinston, NC. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Erin Jones and husband Kevin of Ahoskie, NC; Megan Caton and husband Billy of Wilmington, NC; Jonathan Byrd and wife Mary of La Grange, NC; and Samantha Stanley of Kinston, NC. Mrs. Byrd had 4 great-grandchildren: Landon Whaley, Christopher Caton, Whitney Byrd, and Morgan Caton.

She has 2 surviving brothers, Sam Lassiter and wife Betty of Millennium and Jerry Lassiter and wife of Eastern Shore, VA; and 2 surviving widowed sisters, Rosa Parks of Suffolk, VA; and Audrey Copeland of Tyner, NC. She was predeceased by her 2 older brothers, Woodard Lassiter and Starkie Lassiter. Their wives Marion and Irene still survive.

Mrs. Byrd was a homemaker and was a member of the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church at the time of her death.

Memorial donations may be made to: MPHC Building Fund, P O Box 416, Aulander, NC; or to University Health Systems Home Health and Hospice, 521 Myers Street, P O Box 72, Ahoskie, NC.

Visitation will take place at Garrett-Jones Funeral on Highway 42 west of Ahoskie on Tuesday night from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, and at other times in the home of daughter Brenda at 116 Bruce Farmer Road in Millennium.

Funeral services will be held Wed., Dec. 8th, at 2 o’clock, at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie, NC, by the Rev. Taylor Latham. Burial will follow in the Byrd Family Cemetery near Colerain.

Charles Robert Blowe
November 26, 2010

AULANDER – Charles Robert Blowe, age 71, of the 200 block of Millennium Road, died Friday, November 26, 2010, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Mr. Blowe was born in Hertford County on September 19, 1939, a son of the late William Carlton and Bertha Futrell Blowe.

He was a member of Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a retired millwright from what is now Evans Lumber Company in Lewiston, after many years of service.

Robert was an Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Myrell Nichols Blowe of the home; his daughters, Dana B. Southard of Jacksonville, NC, and Donna B. Morris of Aulander, NC; his sons, Robert Jerome Blowe, also of Aulander, and James Carlton Blowe of Rich Square, NC; a sister, Annie Rae Hall of Severn, NC; and a brother Royce Blowe of Greensboro, NC. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Phillip Jeremy Bryant and Savannah Southard. Besides his parents, Mr. Blowe was predeceased by a step-son, Kenneth Smith, and two sisters, Marion Joyner and Cora Mae Eagles.

A visitation will be held from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, November 29, 2010, at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church, and a celebration of life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Taylor Lathan officiating. Burial will follow in Hall-Rogerson Cemetery with Military Honors.

Marilyn Ann Edwards

Marilyn Ann Edwards, age 69, of Ahoskie, died December 9, 2010.

She was born April 17, 1941 in Woodland to the late Felix Futrell and Irene Rose Futrell.

She was married to the late Steve Oneal Edwards.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Rev. Brian Hall will officiate.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Stephanie Flowers of Grandy, a son Jay Early, grandchildren Rhiannon Bryan, Kailey Flowers, Seth Smith and Kayden Smith, great-grandchild Tristen Bryan, brothers Charles Futrell of Goldsboro and Tony Futrell of Oxford and a sister Dorothy McKenzie of Florida.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Hope Dunlow.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Daniel Webster Lassiter

Daniel Webster Lassiter, age 94, of Aulander, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

He was born April 20, 1916 in Hertford County to the late William Lanzy Lassiter and Ella Lassiter Lassiter.

He was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a member of Aulander Baptist Church, was a founding member of the Aulander Fire Department and Rescue Squad serving 33 years.

He was an avid hunter and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Aulander Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Johnson and Rev. Robbie Parker will officiate.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 75 years Goldie Bradley Lassiter of the home, a daughter Marion Dilday and her husband Robert of Powellsville, two sons, Daniel E. Lassiter and his wife Susan and Wayne Lassiter and his wife Betty all of Aulander, grandchildren; Joyce Brown and her husband Braxton, Karen Hoggard and her husband Greg, Kelly Tibbitt, Dana Lassiter and his wife Greta and Michael Wayne Lassiter and his wife Connie and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Memorials may be made to the Aulander Baptist Church.

Mary Elizabeth Beale Rountree

Mary Elizabeth Beale Rountree, age 76, of Harrellsville, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at her home.

She was born March 3, 1935 in Northampton County to the Clayton Beale and Bessie Vann Beale.

She was the wife of the late Aubrey Leon Rountree.

She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, a Homemaker and a member of Christian Harbor Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the graveside in Harrellsville Cemetery.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Annette Thompson and her husband Monte and Lisa Perry and her husband Jerry both of Harrellsville, a son Mike Rountree and his wife Jennifer of Lexington, five grandchildren Jason Perry, Clay Thompson, Andy Thompson, Kelsey Rountree and Collin Rountree, two sisters Betty Shackelford of Badin Lake, NC, and Peggy Steele of Colonial Heights, VA, and a brother Twin Sumner of Annandale, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother C.W. Beale.

Murrell Turner Holloman
April 25, 2011

AHOSKIE – Murrell Turner Holloman, age 88, of the 300 block of Talmadge Ave., died Monday, April 25, 2011, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Holloman was born on October 1, 1922, in Bertie County, NC, a daughter of the late Raleigh and Mary Askew Turner.

She was a charter member of Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church and a member of Woodmen of the World.

She was retired from Carolina Telephone after 47 years of service.

Murrell was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed reading, yard work, especially picking up pinecones, gospel singing, and was one who loved to travel.

Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband of 65 years, Paul Alton Holloman; a daughter, Debra Elizabeth Holloman of Flatrock, NC; a son, Paul Davy Holloman of Colerain, NC; a grandson, Bruce Eric Holloman of Hendersonville, NC; and a brother, Robert C. Turner of Colerain. Mrs. Holloman was predeceased by her brothers, Leroy and Alfred Benton Turner.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at the Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011 with the Rev. Phillip Tipton and Rev. Robert May officiating. Burial will follow in the Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home on Thursday, April 28, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., and other times at the home.

Garrett-Jones Funeral Home is serving the Holloman family.
