George Dewey Satterthwaite Jr.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. George Dewey Satterthwaite Jr., 76, of 1833 Hwy. 48 South, Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greensville.
Mr. Satterthwaite was a loving husband and friend to all who knew him.
He was a member of Smith United Methodist Church, the National Rifle Association, Twin City Rifle Club, and Faison Hunting Club.
He served in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Dewey and Hattie Bradley Satterthwaite Sr.; and one son, George Dewey Satterthwaite III.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gertrude Powell Satterthwaite; his godson, C.H. Powell Jr. and his wife, Doris, and their children, Jennifer and Gregory; five sisters, Grace Golitko of Bellwood, Ill., Ruth Chrissinger of Reistertown, Md., Ann Outten and her husband, Henry, of Henrico, Jean Faust and her husband, Irvin, of New York, N.Y., and Joyce Metabarger of Robinsdale, Minn.; two brothers, R.L. Satterthwaite of Smithfield, and Kenneth Satterthwaite and his wife, Victoria, of Omaha, Ark.; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 4 in the chapel, with Dr. Bobby Dean and Dr. Charles Peterson officiating.
Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Oct. 3, and other times at the home located at 1833 Hwy. 48 South, Roanoke Rapids.
Lawrence Gee
JACKSON -- Lawrence Gee, 90, of Rt. 1, Box 440, Jackson, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Guardian Care of Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Gee is survived by two sons, Thomas "Tony" Gee (Ruth) of the home, and Howard Gee (Allene) of Delran, N.J., 18 grandchildren; a sister, Beulah Boone of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Alex Gee of Lexington; a host of great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Jean Gee of Weldon.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1 at Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Franklin Williams officiating.
Interment will follow in Bell Cemetery in Jackson.

Lucy Gardner Stewart
BATTLEBORO -- Lucy Gardner Stewart, 80, of Battleboro, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., today, Oct. 3 at Battleboro Baptist Church. Pastor Horace Ward officiated.
Burial followed in Battleboro Cemetery.

CONWAY -- Roland Johnnie Liverman, 60, a Northampton County native, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4 at Ashley's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Annex, with the Rev. David Ross officiating.

Bell Marie Johnson
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mrs. Bell Marie Johnson, 48, of 4648 Hwy. 158, Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Greensville Memorial Hospital in Emporia, Va.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Halifax County, and was a former lab technician with the Prince Squire Clinic in Emporia.
She was preceded in death by her father, Malcolm Patterson.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Audrey Tucker Miles and Marvin Miles of Roanoke Rapids; her husband, David Johnson of the home; a daughter, Margaret Johnson of the home; a stepdaughter, Angel Carlson of Roanoke Rapids; a stepson, Wallace Johnson of Roanoke Rapids; a sister, Wendy Miles of Roanoke Rapids; and three grandchildren, September and Cierra Carlson, and Shanna Johnson, all of Roanoke Rapids.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 5 at Cedarwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Dennis Gregory officiating.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Cofield Funeral Home in Weldon, for Ida Mills of Roanoke Rapids, who died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.
Violet Olson Bounds
GASTON -- Mrs. Violet Olson Bounds, 79, of Lot 30 Clements Campground, Gaston, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001.
Mrs. Bounds was the daughter of the late Alfred Olson and Inga Sorenson, born in Lake Park, Minn., and was the widower of the late C.P. Bounds.
She was a member of Weldon United Methodist Church and, prior to her retirement, she was an avid gardener and a member of The Weldon Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Gordon, Palmer, Sidney, Ralph, Elmer, Richard and Floyd Olson; and three sisters, Agnes, Ester and Alfreda.
She is survived by one sister, Marie Leitheiser of Great Falls, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5 at Weldon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sue Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.

Rev. John William Spencer
ELBERON, Va. -- The Rev. John William Spencer, 77, of Elberon, Va., died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001.
The Rev. Spencer was born on Jan. 16, 1924, in Hampton, Va., to the late John W. Spencer Sr. and Minnie B. Hogge Spencer.
He was a 1963 graduate of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, had served on the Board of Ministers of Campbell University, and had served as pastor of the Community Center in Halifax, Atlantic Baptist in Atlantic, Moore's Swamp Baptist Church in Elberon, Va., Staunton River Baptist Church in Brookneal, Va., Forest Hill Baptist Church in Skippers, Va., Seaboard Baptist Church in Seaboard, South Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, and was currently the pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church in Windsor, Va.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Grubbs Spencer; two sons, J. David Spencer and his wife, Caroline, and James W. Spencer, all of Hampton, Va.; two daughters, Dorothy Spencer Murray and her husband, Daniel, and Linda Spencer Tuck and her husband, Michael, all of Windsor, Va.; two stepsons, B.A. Seward III of Culpepper, Va., and Anthony Seward and his wife, Lisa, of Surry, Va.; his stepdaughters, Suzanne S. Rogers and her husband, Kenny, Robin S. Gynn and her husband, Harold, all of Surry, Martha S. Newsome and her husband, Clarence, and Elizabeth S. Leonard of Windsor; his brother, James M. Spencer and his wife, Christine, of Hampton, Va.; his mother-in-law, Dorothy White Grubbs of Elberon, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27 at Maranatha Baptist Church on Deer Path Trail in Windsor, with the Rev. Jarvis Hearn officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.

ENFIELD -- Mr. Charles Whitaker died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27 at The Church of the Advent Rectory in Enfield, with the Rev. Lea Powell officiating.
Burial will be held at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala.

Berry Green "B.G.' Tucker Jr.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Berry Green "B.G." Tucker Jr., 74, of 238 Jefferson St., Roanoke Rapids, formerly of Richmond, Va., died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Tucker was born in Warrenton.
He served his country in the Marines and fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He retired from driving a truck for Overnight after 25 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Tucker; his parents, Berry Green Tucker Sr. and Lillian M. Vaughan Tucker; two sisters, Margaret Tucker Cain and Julia Tucker Faye; one brother-in-law, Earl Christopher Cain; and one nephew, Earl Christopher "Pud" Cain Jr.
Cherishing his memory is one sister, Audrey Ruth Miles and her husband, Marvin Miles, of Roanoke Rapids; one brother, James G. Tucker and his wife, Mary K. Tucker, of Roanoke Rapids; four nieces, Mary Lillian Tucker Mitchell and her husband, Micah S. "Mike" Mitchell, Bell M. Johnson and her husband, David Johnson, and Wendy A. Miles, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Mary Lillian Plageman and her husband, Robert "Bob" Plageman, of Cape Coral, Fla.; three nephews, Michael "Mike" Fahey and his wife, Angela Fahey, Christopher "Chris" Fahey and his wife, Tammy Fahey, and James Berry Tucker, all of Roanoke Rapids; six great-nieces, Lillian Destiny Marie Ivory and Jessica Renee Fahey, both of Roanoke Rapids, Amy P. Reynolds and her husband, David Reynolds, of Gainesville, Fla., Julie P. Durlans and her husband, Dimitri Durlans, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Katie Plageman of Cape Coral, Fla.; three great-nephews, Jason S. Ivory II, Michael L. Fahey and Christopher M. Fahey, all of Roanoke Rapids; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Fahey of Roanoke Rapids; and a special friend, David Spain of Richmond, Va.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24 at the Bermuda Memorial Park in Chester, Va.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Prayers and song will be led by Richard Brown and his wife, Elizabeth Brown.
