Clarence "Dink" Hale, Sr.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Clarence "Dink" Hale, Sr., 83, of 813 E. 11th St., Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001.
Mr. Hale was the widower of the late Mary Virginia Hawkins and the son of the late Silas Alexander Hale and Gertrude Hale Hale.
He was a Navy World War II veteran and was retired from J.P. Stevens with 46 years of service.
He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Hale, Jr.
He is survived by three sons, Edward D. Hale of Virginia Beach, Va., Allan R. Hale of Danville, Va., and Kenny Hale of Littleton; one sister, Vera Richardson of Jarratt, Va.; one brother-in-law, Paul Hawkins of Gaston; and five grandchildren, Brett Hale, Amanda Hale, Alex and Maggie Hale and Danielle Hale.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the Hawkins Family Cemetery, State Rd., 1431, West Hawkins Road just pass Hawkins Chapel Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Leonard Tucker officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Dec. 4 at the home located at 813 E. 11th Street, Roanoke Rapids.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Halifax County, 1225 Julian R. Allsbrook Hwy., Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Loving husband and father
LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. -- Mr. Joseph T. Archer, 73, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in Lake Havasu, Ariz.
Mr. Archer is survived by his wife, Claire Grimaldi Archer; two daughters, Marilu Archer of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Susan Ann Archer of Anchorage, Alaska; a son, William Archer of New Jersey; two granddaughters and one grandson; one sister, Mattie C. Archer of Fillmore, Calif.; and a brother, Robert Alvin Archer of Roanoke Rapids.
A memorial service and interment was held on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Boulder City, Nev., Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.
Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home in Lake Havasu, Ariz., handled the arrangements.
Helen "Bubba' Virginia Wright Medlin Harris
SEABOARD -- Helen "Bubba" Virginia Wright Medlin Harris, 80, of Seaboard, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
"Bubba" as she was affectionately called, was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, was retired from J.P. Stevens, and in more recent years, worked for Collier Harley Davidson, a position she dearly loved and was loved by all who met her.
She cherished her family and friends and took great pride in cooking and entertaining.
She is survived by two daughters, Dean Collier and her husband, Marshall, of Roanoke Rapids, and Sandra Heuay and her husband, Rob, of Richmond, Va.; one son, Grady Medlin Jr. and his wife, Sallie, of Surry, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Cheryl Hedgepeth, Jenger Collier, Marsha Hearp and Mark Collier, all of Roanoke Rapids, Laura Russett of New Orleans, La., Rob Heuay Jr. of Richmond, Va., Alex Heuay of Wrightsville Beach, and Melissa Curl, Angela Curl and Jennie Curl, all of Surry, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Brook McCabe, Kelly McCabe, Samantha Hearp, Sierra Hearp and Brandon Collier; two sisters, Nellie Edwards and Lorene Lyles of Roanoke Rapids; one brother, "Choo Choo" Wright and his wife, Faye, of Roanoke Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Thomas Sweeley officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Jacob Leonard Dickens, Sr.
HALIFAX -- Jacob Leonard Dickens, Sr., 91, of 4754 Hwy. 301, Halifax, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001.
Mr. Dickens was the widower of the late Ellen Miles Dickens, of which he was married to for 49 years.
He was the son of the late Jacob Augustus Dickens and Nannie Sue Vaughan Dickens.
He was a lifetime farmer, avid bird hunter, a member and deacon of Elam Baptist Church, where he was president of his Sunday school class and a member of the Brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, William E. "Bill" Howell; five sisters, Pauline D. Boseman, Nettie Mae Hawkins, Mary Ivie D. Lewis, Bertha D. Shell and Ethel D. Glasgow; and two brothers, Warren Vaughan Dickens and William E. Dickens.
He is survived by three daughters, Betty Gray Davis and her husband, Anderson, and Lou D. Stephenson and her husband, Elliott, all of Seaboard, and Nan D. Howell of Wilmington; one son, J.L. "Leon" Dickens Jr. and his wife, Brenda P., of Garysburg; three sisters, Avis Williams, Minnie Grace Horton and Hazel Hasty, all of Roanoke Rapids; three brothers, Elliott Dickens of Gaston, the Rev. Grady Dickens of Dortches, and Allen Dickens of Gaston; 11 grandchildren, Joey Dickens Davis, Michael Anderson Davis, John Grayling Davis, Dr. Bentley Stephenson, Jamie Stephenson, LouAnne S. Liverman, Angie H. Dorovic, Daniel H. Howell, J.L. "Lee" Dickens III, Paige Dickens and Ashley Dickens; and five great-grandchildren, Chelsia Davis, Cameron Davis, Henry Liverman, Ellen Liverman and Jordan Howell.

Baciel Earl "Bill" Speight
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Baciel Earl "Bill" Speight, 92, of 625 Rapids Street, Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Speight was born in Halifax County and was the son of the late Charlie Speight and Annie Marks Speight.
He was retired from the Transportation Department of the Halifax County Schools.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was an active choir member of 57 years.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer and recorded his first hole-in-one at age 89.
He served with the United States Navy in World War II, serving in the Seabees in the South Pacific.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Newsome Speight.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda S. Taylor of Belleview, Fla.; two brothers, Charles Norman Speight of Columbia, S.C., and William P. Speight of Hope Mills; and two sisters, Margaret S. Snyder of Dittmer, Mo., and Josephine S. Unglesbee of Brookeville, Md.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William D. Sabiston III officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
Wrenn Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Dec. 4.

Henry Milton Allen
SKIPPERS, Va. -- Henry Milton Allen, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Pauline White Allen of Skippers, Va.; his daughters, Brenda A. Newton of Skippers, and Clara A. Ogburn, Julie A. Allen and Pamela A. Lifsey, all of Emporia, Va.; his sons, Donnie R. Allen of Chester, Va., Bernie Ed Allen of Roanoke Rapids, James D. Allen of Conway, and Henry Stephen Allen and Joseph Michael Allen, both of Skippers; his sisters, Josephine A. Covington of Skippers, and Ida A. Wrenn and Esther Allen, both of Emporia; his brothers, Alfred A. Allen of Emporia, and Arthur Wyche Allen of Skippers; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Echols Funeral Home in Emporia is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4 in the chapel.
Burial will follow in the Fountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

William David "Buckwheat" Buchannon
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- William David "Buckwheat" Buchannon, 44, of 410 Quail Court Rd., formerly of Dunn, died Friday, November 30, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Buchannon was retired from Food Lion after many years of service.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret Clark McLamb and his father, Billy Ray McLamb of Dunn; one sister, Debra Sumner and her husband, Calvin, of Potecasi; one niece, Brandy, also of Potecasi; two brothers, Wayne McLamb and his wife, Janice, of Erwin, and Billy Ray McLamb Jr. of Cary; his grandmother, Mozelle Clark of Lasker; several aunts, uncles and many cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, at Hodges Chapel Church Cemetery in Benson, with the Rev. Sam Taylor and Rev. Ron Byrd officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson today, Sunday, Dec. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m., and other times at the home of Mr. Buchannon's sister, Debra Sumner, Hwy. 35, Potecasi.
Preston Ernest Bryan
WOODLAND -- Mr. Preston Ernest Bryan, 47, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
